Parents, teachers fret over proposed drama cuts Thomas Lee/The Daily Northwestern Accompanist Lynn Denton plays "We Can Pull it Off" during the Thursday premiere of Willard Elementary School's musical "The Emperor's New Clothes."
Supporters cite academic, social benefits to students to defend D65 program By Stephanie Chen May 03, 2004
While parents, teachers and students celebrated Francis Willard Elementary School's production of "The Emperor's New Clothes" Friday night, the thought of losing the benefits of fourth- and fifth-grade drama still rested on some of their minds. "They have to make cuts somewhere," said Kathy McGonigle, the parent of a child in the play. "But cutting drama will affect every child in the school system." The Evanston/Skokie School District 65 school board is continuing to consider cutting programs including childcare, instrumental music and drama in an effort to close a $1.7 million budget deficit. School board member Jonathan Baum said the district hasn't yet discussed the drama cuts. "If we can make all the reductions without cutting fourth- and fifth-grade drama, then we will try to do that," Baum said.

Drama at Banff The Banff Centre got its start as the Banff School of Drama in 1933. It was born during the period of political discontent and disillusionment that characterized Depression-era Alberta. In the 1920's, small, local theatre groups had begun to flourish nationwide. The movement gained momentum in the early 1930's, as the failing economy put a stop to touring shows. Suddenly, Albertans were left to their own resources for entertainment and social development. Responding to this need, Ned Corbett, head of the University of Alberta's Department of Extension, applied for a $30,000 Carnegie Grant. In 1932, he established a travelling arts development program for the province and hired Elizabeth Haynes to teach drama, and the following year The Banff School of Drama was established. Actors have responded enthusiastically to the program at The Banff Centre ever since its inception in 1933. Back then, an unexpectedly high number of students registered for The Banff School of Drama, a summer class that was held in the old Brewster Auditorium on Banff Avenue.

Involvement in theatre arts is a fulfilling experience because theatre deals with the very essence of human existence. The theatre mirrors the human experienceour thoughts, our actions, our dreams, our disappointments. The theatre arts major prepares an individual for work in professional or community theatre, and also lays a foundation for teaching theatre through the secondary school levels. A student who plans to teach at the college and university level will need additional graduate work and should, with the assistance of an advisor, carefully investigate appropriate programs of graduate study. There is a required audition and interview process for admittance into the Theatre Major. The Theatre Department Coordinator will notify in writing those accepted into the Theatre Program.

On July 1, 2001 the Drama Program officially became the Department of Theater Studies at Duke
With this development our curriculum, major and minor requirements, and faculty will be changing and expanding in exciting ways. This change marks the culmination of literally decades of effort . Drama Program Celebrates 25 Years 1990s Bring New Growth to Drama Program Note: These articles were published in the spring and fall 2000 issues ofthe Program in Drama newsletter . Drama Program Celebrates 25 Years In July, 1999, the Drama faculty submitted a proposal to convert the Program in Drama to a Department of Theater Studies. As this proposal is reviewed, the Program in Drama turns 25 years old. According to John Clum, currently the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the program, the past quarter century has seen enormous changes in the study of theater at Duke: "In 1975 we were essentially a three-man operation. I served as Director, Scott Parker was Technical Director, and Professor Kenneth Reardon of the English Department also taught courses. Since then, the Program has grown to seven full-time, regular rank faculty, plus a number of part-time professional artists and instructors." Clum has a unique perspective on the Program in Drama, being the only current faculty member present at its creation. In the fall of 1972, Clum, then Associate Professor of English, was appointed chair of the Drama Planning Committee, formed in response to student interest in a drama department. The committee's first proposal, submitted in the spring of 1973, called for the creation of a drama department which would include a chair, a director of undergraduate studies, one assistant professor, an actor-in-residence, and other visiting artists. This initial proposal was turned down because it was too expensive.

Summer Program Summaries Day Camp: Day Camp is designed to give younger campers a taste of camp programs. From their arrival at 8:30 to departure at 5:00, campers spend a full and busy day rotating between sailing, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, games, pony rides, and many more exciting activities. The week is highlighted by an overnight experience each Thursday. For a very reasonable price, campers can combine the camp experience with the luxuries of living at home. Waterskiing: Campers in this program are able to concentrate on either skiing or wakeboarding under the guidance of skilled instructors. The emphasis is on acquiring skills in a manner that promotes both fun and safety. We operate two Malibu ski boats through the four program periods, and so are able to accommodate a large number of campers. We invite your camper to take advantage of this opportunity to learn an exciting lifetime skill. Swimming: We believe that swimming is a skill that all children should have. For that reason, swimming instruction is mandatory unless a written request of exemption is received from the camper’s parents. At Camp Eberhart, swim instruction is fun and safe! Instruction is given at five levels, and campers can progress through the levels at their own rate. Campers enjoy relaxing is the clean, cool waters of Corey Lake. Windsurfing: Windsurfing has become a very popular water sport at Camp Eberhart. Through instruction, campers learn the basics of balance and are able to progress through our levels.

Preliminary information about plans for a program sought to be offered summers at a suburban high school in the Birmingham, Alabama area. For additional information, or to indicate a desire to participate as a student, teacher, or financial sponsor for students please e-mail Richard Garlikov . For potential students, curiosity, creativity, and a desire to learn or to perform are the most important factors, not grades, test scores, or previous achievement. For potential teachers, a teaching credential is not necessary; subject matter knowledge and enthusiasm for sharing that knowledge, with the ability to communicate with students in an interesting way are what is important. Summer Renaissance Program
    (Arts, Humanities, Math, Science, Recreation)
Proposal and Rationale This plan grew from a search for the kind of "pre-college" program that seems not to exist in the U.S., since most involve students' just working in very narrow, specialized fields in music, athletics, OR academics often just taking very specialized, and compressed, day-long courses or regular college summer courses. Many existing academically oriented programs are for high school seniors. This will be a broader, more generally intellectually and artistically stimulating kind of program for students, of whatever age, that would benefit from it. There should also be opportunities where students work among themselves primarily to develop something they wish to, for example, a string quartet may want to try to work out a performance of a piece on their own, with an adult availablefor help only if and when the students wish help. Some students may even want to work on performing and premiering a composition written by a fellow student. Some musicians might want to play music for a ballet that the dance students will perform, or an opera or musical. Some physics students may have an idea for something they would like to work out primarily by themselves, with a mentor available at certain points.
