Lifeline Players "I have loved drama from an early age, but not until a few years ago did I realize its amazing potential in ministry. Different people relate and connect with different things. When one person might be touched by music or a sermon, another can be equally impacted by drama. So many people have been able to relate to the characters in our skits. It is an unbelievable privilege to be used of God in this way."
The Drama Teams of Cedarville University understand that ministry involves much more than what happens on a platform. Ministry is about God working in and through us - equipping us to serve others for His glory. And the use of drama in ministry can be a powerful tool in communcating biblical truth in a unique and relevant way. For children, the dramatization of a biblical text provides a more concrete, sensory-enriched experience that allows them to both see and hear how God has moved in the hearts and lives of people. And drama in the ministry of the church can serve as "living illustrations" to all ages, relating biblical principles and examining the dynamics of the Christian life as the "word" is made "flesh."

Sexuality Education In the United States, education is controlled by the individual states which may leave decisions to the local level or may set guidelines for curricula and subject matter. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia require schools to provide both sexuality and STD/HIV education; another 15 states require STD/HIV education; and 13 states have no requirements. Before 1998, 10 states required that sexuality education programs teach abstinence and did not require the inclusion of information about contraception. Thirteen states required that sexuality education teach abstinence in addition to information about condoms and contraception. Most mandates for abstinence education came from state legislatures rather than from state departments of education. In the United States, instruction about sexuality varies widely because decisions about curricula are usually determined locally; however, some general observations can be made. Most schools concentrate sexuality education in grades seven through nine and confine the unit to the health or science curriculum. Often, instructors have little or no training in sexuality education. The curricula often range from one to 15 classes, and average five classes.

Class Act
The drama of good teaching By Alexander Nguyen It's fourth period at Hartford Public High in Connecticut, and it's clear that good teaching is hard to define, but easy to see. In Room 338, for example, it doesn't matter that most students will eat a subsidized lunch today or that over half the student body will eventually drop out. What matters is what Susan Matthews says matters. "We're going to talk about eyes today; we all have two," she says-no, decrees-to 22 students watching her from behind laboratory benches. "Why?" A small pause, short enough to escape conscious notice but long enough to underline the question's significance. And when Matthews launches into her introduction, she paces and gestures, delivering lab instructions in a short, clear, urgent, almost theatrical fashion. "At the end of the period," she commands, "this is what you should be able to answer." The class breaks into groups, and Matthews, a 29-year teaching veteran who studied opera in college, is darting from group to group. "Does it matter if you have glasses?" she repeats a student's question. "You tell me. The exercise is about why you need two eyes. Does the fact that you have glasses change the fact that you have two eyes?" The student shakes his head no. "That's right," exclaims Matthews, smiling, arms thrown up, and eyes wide open. "See? You answered your own question!" Principal Joseph Wall considers Matthews one of the school's best teachers.

in the Dance of Isadora Duncan General Information
The Isadora Duncan Foundation for Contemporary Dance, Inc. is now offering certification in Advanced Studies in the Dance of Isadora Duncan. Lori Belilove, director of the program, has developed a program for the study of the dance of Isadora Duncan, which encompasses a large body of interdisciplinary studies. Duncan was an innovator in the field of dance, revolutionizing the concept worldwide of what it means to be a dancer. She was the first dancer to articulate the need for dancers to educate themselves, to be broad thinkers, to study history and question the norm. Candidates are required to participate in the IDF Book Club held during the intensive workshops and after the evening classes periodically throughout the year. The Book Club meets with a focus on a given topic or book relating to the study of Duncan and may include guest speakers. Requirements
A wealth of inter-related subjects become sources for understanding the dance of Isadora Duncan. Completion of the Certificate Program requires 4 intensive 10-day workshops (offered twice a year), 500 class hours, and a final project within the mentoring program.

Toward a Radio Drama 101 My notes towards helping people get started creating radio drama. These come from a post I made to the radio drama e-mail discussion list and my reply to a college instructor seeking advice for a radio course. To easily search my site, click here and replace the generic text with your own criteria. Radio Resources Home Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001
Subject: Toward a Radio Drama 101 Fellow radio-ists, There's been a bit of discussion on radio books and I thought I might be of some assistance here. While many members of this list are practicing audio dramatists, I know there are always radio newbies looking for advice. http://www.mtr.org While these are production workshops for families, the scripts are a veritable "how-to" demonstration of a variety of radio techniques. For a $5 fee, you produce a classic-style show, get to keep the script, and they send you a cassette recording of your production. We do everything from soaps to Sci-Fi. And it's fun!
I haven't had time to put in a full fledged on-line course in radio writing, but there are sample pages and discussions of techniques. I recommend that writers read through the pages on scoring, sound effects and production because they may give you ideas on exploiting the medium. I also have links to other resources on the web. As for books about how to write for radio, I just found a copy of Erik Barnouw's "Handbook of Radio Writing" (1940) at a flea market for $1. It's a well written book by a Columbia University "radio professor" that takes a very comprehensive approach to the unique challenges of the medium with many examples from golden age programs. DRAMA AT GREENWICH ACADEMY Drama is an important aspect of education and enrichment at Greenwich Academy. Drama productions provide the stage for student actors, enlist the expertise of student technicians and celebrate individual talents and collaborative efforts. In addition, every year a number of theater companies, actors, directors and technicians visit the Academy and share their knowledge, experience and cultural heritage with the students.
Greenwich Academy drama productions explore new territories technologically, thematically and technically. The talents and diverse interests of faculty and students generate an extraordinary range of projects.
The Drama Department offers students a chance to explore classic and modern dramatic literature through the study of movement, voice, improvisation and scene study. In both the Lower and Middle Schools, students are given a chance to explore drama. As the students grow older, their challenges increase. Group VII tackles Gilbert and Sullivan, Group VIII performs in a special Arts Night musical and Group IX performs a complete Shakespearean play.

http://www.greenwichacademy.org/diversity/message.asp
About GA Academics Admission Alumnae ... Contact Us A MESSAGE FROM PATSY HOWARD It is our responsibility now more than ever to teach our students the difficult lessons of global diversity. In a letter to Columbia Teachers College alumni (myself among them), President Arthur Levine wrote, "We have a moment in which we can choose the values we want our children to learn in their classes…I would like my children taught about tolerance and the strength that diversity brings."
At Greenwich Academy, we, too, believe we must expose our students to a multicultural education that teaches them to understand and respect the cultures, religions and national traditions that are the realities of contemporary life. We must teach them that as a human family, we must have tolerance for different perspectives and points of view. We must also teach them that violence and terrorism from whatever quarter are antithetical to the beliefs and values that we, and all compassionate people, hold dear.
Recently, I had an experience that made me examine my beliefs about race, privilege and diversity. I attended the Milton Diversity Conference with four GA colleagues. We were not the first of our community to go, and I know others will follow. Challenged by powerful videos and compelling literature, we met every day in small groups to discuss our attitudes. I was startled to find that what I had thought were my long-held open and tolerant instincts and principles were based on a lack of awareness of white privilege and its implications. I returned to Greenwich rededicated to making our school as inclusive a community as possible.
