Drama Program
The Drama programs (Minor, Major, Specialist) offer students the opportunity to combine high standards of practical, professionally oriented theatre training with a rich and rigorous academic program.
Housed in the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse at the University of Toronto's downtown campus, this unique undergraduate program has, since 1975, offered a stimulating alternative to other university drama programs by interweaving a broad range of practical courses with a solid academic training.
The program draws instructors in academic courses from departments across the University of Toronto. Experienced and well-known theatre professionals teach practical courses.
The program has also forged links with leading Canadian theatres, including Factory Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Theatre Columbus, and Theatre Smith-Gilmour. Our instructors' ties to these theatres, along with the UC Drama Program alumni who hold important positions in these and other professional theatres, assure our graduates of direct access to future professional theatre training and employment opportunities.
Drama Courses
The program's flexibility allows students to select from a group of courses those in which they are most interested. Class sizes are kept small, so students receive individual focus and attention. Acceptance into practical courses (performance, production, design) is based on an audition and/or interview. Students must audition each year for acceptance into the next level of performance classes. Students of the University College Drama Program also compliment their studies with selected courses from other departments.

These include programs and courses in Aboriginal Studies, Canadian Studies, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Drama, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Sexual Diversity Studies, in addition to 199Y Seminars, and introductory courses for non-specialists in such areas as mathematics, physics, and architecture. The overall aims of the College programs are to foster interdisciplinary work in significant areas of study and to encourage intellectual breadth. Many program courses are open to students not enrolled in the programs themselves. In addition, University College is home to myriad professors in various departments of Arts and Sciences at UofT from Anthropology to Zoology.

Aboriginal Studies

The Aboriginal Studies Program focuses on the culture, language, and history of First Nations people, contributing to our understanding of the interaction between First Nations and Euro-Canadian society. Program Description
The Department of Drama/Dance provides a lively theatre production environment and academic program that is positive, supportive and rigorous in its expectations of graduate students. The goal of the professional training at an advanced level is to prepare the student artist for a career in the professional theatre or theatre education. Graduate students are given opportunities to teach in labs, shops, studios and in the classroom because we recognize that teaching one's art has become an integral, beneficial and often necessary part of the professional artist's career. Teaching also further develops the students' understanding of their own craft and theory.

Obsessed with the results of so-called high-stakes testing (which, in fact, have turned into minimum competency tests that almost any middle-class kid can pass with a modicum of effort), educators have forgotten that what schools offer outside the classroom also is essential to a total education.

Above, local actor Geoffrey Brown is teaching drama classes this summer at the Hudgens Center for the Arts. Brown has been directing children’s theater for 10 years. Below, Brown’s skills include piano playing. Geoffrey Brown paused in front of a banner for “The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci” exhibit at the Jacqueline Casey Hudgens Center for the Arts. “I don’t think I look anything like Leonardo da Vinci,” he said. “Well, we both have beards.”
Whether or not Brown is actually a da Vinci look-alike, the actor was hired to portray the artist at the Children’s Arts Museum at the Hudgens Center. During the five-month Leonardo da Vinci exhibit, Brown performed for thousands of students visiting the museum on field trips.
“It was a lot like teaching an art history and science history lesson in character. It was really fun,” Brown said.
When the exhibit closed May 6, Brown was finished with his role as the Renaissance artist. But he’s still working for the Hudgens Center, teaching drama classes, doing graphic design projects and hosting children’s birthday parties.

First, you do not have to audition to be a theatre major at OCU. Why? Because high school drama programs and drama teachers are so varied throughout this country, we didn't think it would be fair to base admission to the department on the type of high school drama program you had - or the high school drama program you didn't have! If you are accepted at OCU you are accepted into the theatre program. If your first language is not English, you will have to score a 55 on the Test of Spoken English to be a student in any of our theatre programs. Second, the theatre at Oklahoma City University is the only one around that presents a six-show main stage season . Every season includes 4 plays for adult audiences and 2 plays for young audiences. Each play for adults is performed four times. Each theatre for young audiences' production has two daytime performances for school groups and three public performances for general audiences. Students enrolled in Directing I, Directing II, and graduate projects classes have the opportunity to direct plays; this, of course, affords students even more opportunities to perform!
