" The Orchard Studios" from Gunnislake. A local drama, dance and singing studio showed just what they could do. Featuring children of all ages from tiniest to teenagers " The Orchard Studios" put on a wonderful show, local adults added witty support in a few of the sketches and considering the number of children involved Caroline Chapman did a marvelous job of keeping everything under control. All the children took part from tap, ballet, singing to acting. From the look on the their faces it seemed they really enjoyed every minute of this well thought out show on a light hearted look at life. I think for their first show they should all be congratulated.

    90. Albany High School Drama Club -- Albany, New York
In a national competition, Albany High School s awardwinning drama Club was selected and crew of approximately 40 students will perform the musical Ragtime.

    THE HONOR

In a national competition, Albany High School's award-winning Drama Club was selected to represent NYS in August 2003 at the world-renowned Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
    THE PLAY, THE CAST
A cast and crew of approximately 40 students will perform the musical Ragtime. The play, set in New York, is an historical piece that explores the many compelling racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and political issues that bubbled to the surface at the turn of the century as America's "melting pot" character was forged.
THE COST, THE TASK BEFORE US
Festival organizers estimate a cost of approximately $4000/participant. As the parents and staff are committed to offering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to as many students as possible, our fundraising committee and the students have launched a massive, broad-based funding campaign.
THE VALUE OF THE EXPERIENCE FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY
It is particularly fitting that Albany High's theatre group, chosen to represent the state of New York, will be presenting a musical account of life in New York City in the early 1900s, capturing on stage an especially vibrant and volatile chapter in American history. It is also fitting that this musical will be one of the cornerstones of Albany High School's 2003 celebration of Black History Month.
All too often, the experiences of our inner-city youth are limited by poverty and lack of opportunity. These limitations frequently translate to a rather narrow definition of what life has to offer, and a similarly narrow view of what they have to offer their community. This trip abroad, and the pre-trip planning and collaboration that will ultimately make it a reality, will greatly expand the horizons of this multi-talented, multicultural group of students.

    Drama Club
The Bishop Timon-St. Jude Drama Club has formed a joint venture with Mount Mercy Academy to create one single Drama Club. In the previous years, the Drama Club has gone on field trips to such places as The Pfeiffer Theatre in Downtown Buffalo, The Center for the Arts at the University of New York at Buffalo, the Irish Classical Theater, Kavinoky Theater, Studio Arena, and has spent a full day in Toronto attending various performances. Some of the past musical productions that the Drama Club has been involved with included Damn Yankees, Over Here, Godspell, Little Shop of Horrors and Kenny award winning musicals; The Wizard of Oz and The Music Man. All productions are presented with the help of a core group of Timon Alumni: Producer-Bob Maggio, Director-Mike Breen, and Technical Director-Jerry Kegler. This year's show, to be held at Bishop Timon Auditorium on November 7, 8, and 9, 2003 is Annie. Four years ago, Timon's Little Theatre was brought back to life. The Drama Club is the "right-hand" of these productions. Previous shows include Twelve Angry Jurors, Harvey, M.A.S.H., and Get Smart. This year's shows is planned to be Arsenic and Old Lace with dates to follow. These plays are presented in the new Center for the Media and Arts on the third floor of the school.

Academic Decathlon Advisor-Mrs. Paquet The Academic Decathlon Team consists of nine team members and approximately twelve alternates. The team is made up of three students with a GPA greater that 3.75, three students with a GPA 3.00 to 3.75 and three students with a GPA below 3.00. The competition consists of events ranging from writing an essay in 45 minutes, giving two speeches and/or participating in a seven - minute interview. Participants also take six multiple choice tests on Mathematics, English, and Economics. Finally the day ends with a super-quiz and an academic relay. Toll Gate High school has a history of success and has participated in The Academic Decathalon since its inception. Toll Gate has consistently placed in the top 5 of all schools, and has more first place wins than any other public school in the state. ASK Mentors Back Advisor-Mrs. Pickett ASK Mentoring is a program in which seniors in National Honor Society go to the freshman homerooms for the first five weeks of school to discuss various topics with them such as the rules of Toll Gate, time management skills, stress, as well as others. The ASK Mentoring sessions give the new freshman a chance to ask questions and talk about anything that is concerning them about their classes and Toll Gate in general. The mentors come back later in the year, after first quarter, to help the freshman get ready for midterm exams. Mentors also work with incoming students to Toll Gate during freshman orientation.

    Toronto Chinese Drama Associations
    DORA NIPP
Fall/Winter 1983 Vol. 5 No.2 Pg. 71 The Chinese United Dramatic Society and the Ship Toy Yuen Dramatic Society are two of Toronto's longest established theatre troupes. What initially began as a social get-together soon evolved into amateur groups that performed traditional Cantonese operas for their own entertainment. Unlike the clan or district associations, which had prerequisites for membership, the dramatic societies were open to anyone who wished to participate. During the 1930s, one recently arrived immigrant to Toronto, Mr. D.J. Lumb, found participating in the activities of the clubs an interesting way to spend his free time. He learned to play a few instruments and, with coaching from former actors, he was taught to sing. Eventually, Mr. Lumb took on acting roles; but as women were still relatively few in number, he was assigned to play the female characters. Ironically, when Jean Lumb, his wife, started acting, she portrayed men. "Nobody wanted to play the bad characters," she explained, "so I was chosen for those parts. We performed together at the Casino Club on Queen Street." A number of years of serious training are required before mastering the rigidly structured gestures that accompany the verbose verse of classical Chinese lyrics. Movements and song are strictly dictated by timing. The skill of the actor or actress is demonstrated in the perfect coordination of both elements.
