Inciting drama
Omari Taylor
Despite the incessant praise Seattle receives for embracing different genres of music, its lack of hip-hop venues and support of hip-hop in general is surprisingly low. Disgustingly low, even. Which brings me to the recent shooting, around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23. Guns were fired in a parking lot within the vicinity of the Bohemian Cafe, resulting in five people injured, three of them seriously, in as many seconds. The Bohemian is a nightclub that just happens to located in Pioneer Square, which, despite heavy police patrolling, is still notorious for violent incidents. As a matter of fact, the shooting occurred shortly after the police van pulled away. Later that afternoon, Schell used the shooting to fuel his never-ending crusade to get music that he and others like him find objectionable out of the city. Blame for the shooting, was, true to form, placed squarely on the Bohemian Cafe, or, more accurately, the people who patronize it. Schell wasted no time whatsoever in condemning the easiest scapegoats on hand. He said in a speech (where several Pioneer Square business people were present as well), "This was something that got out of control because of an event at a club. Hip-hop music generated the type of excitement, after hours, at 3 in the morning, 3:08 to be precise, and the police were on it right away - but it has to do with a recipe of alcohol and guns and the wrong kind of music at the wrong time of day that resulted in this tragedy. It's not something that we can accept in this community."

The building itself dates from the early years of cinema which was its original function with a billiard hall in the upstairs room. In 1953, after much sweat and toil, it was opened as the Festival Theatre to mark the Festival of Britain celebrations. The age of the building means there is always work to be done and recently the Festival Association which runs the theatre has started to carry out improvements which so far have included a complete rewire of the stage lighting, redecorating the auditorium, foyer, and stairway up to the bar area, redecorating the bar and dressing room areas and other sundry items. Like many other organisations we are now looking to the Lottery and other funding bodies to help with further projects. We have recently completed the refurbishment of the auditorium seating at a cost of £7,500. Part of this cost has been met by our seat sponsorship scheme. It is still possible to sponsor a seat and if you feel you can help in this area please contact us at info@hydefestivaltheatre.org.uk

Drama Club
Throughout the year, the Drama Club at Brandywine puts on different productions. In November, a play is performed, which traditionally has been a comedy. This year, the fall play was The Man Who Came to Dinner . Auditions were held within two weeks of the beginning of school. Rehearsals ran from that time until the production: Mondays, Tuesdays, and with some additional rehersals that were added as the perfomrance night approached. The perfomance dates for The Man Who Came to Dinner were November 20th, 21st, and 22nd. During the fall, elections were held for the Drama Executive Board. The Executive Board members host meetings, organize fundraisers, make preparations for the fall play, musical, and the One-Act Play Festival, help organize the Cabaret, and serve as a committee that welcomes new ideas from fellow drama members. Two juniors and one senior are elected each year. The two juniors who serve also serve when they become seniors creating a board of five people. This year, Josh Selekman and Zach Theis are currently on the Executive Board and were just joined by newly elected members: Chrystine Tadler (Senior), Steph Selekman (Junior), and Dan Glavin (Junior). Before the winter break, auditions for the Spring musical were held. This year
