Drama drives fantastic Dears By Matt Galloway The throng snaking up Spadina to College Friday was for the El Mo's queer disco night, Vaseline, but it should have been the lineup to see pop romantique ensemble the Dears. Just give the Montreal crew a few more visits to town. By the time the five-piece was finished, you couldn't walk three steps without running into someone proclaiming the Dears the best band in Canada. They may be right. Friday's gig was not the full orchestra set the band have been threatening to bring to town, but was no less impressive. The Dears seem tied to high drama, from their tortured pop songs, each of which sounds like the outline for a short film, right down to their gear-stuffed tour van, which died outside the El Mo and had to be towed away after the gig. Joined by a two-piece horn section that only occasionally distinguished itself from the space-rock din, the band alternated between sheets of drone-damaged white noise and equally epic pop songs, with Natalia Yanchak's battered Farfisa and Jonathan Cohen's guitar battling for supremacy. A feverish mix in itself, but utterly deadly when you have someone like volatile frontman Murray Lightburn leading the charge. Staring out into space like a serial killer, and with a kerchief tied around his neck, Lightburn pranced and crooned like a grade-A pop star, slowly cranking up the tension as the set wore on.

Drama Clubs and the Hull-House Players Theater programs at Hull-House were an important component of both the artistic and social goals of the settlement. Jane Addams's approach to drama clubs reflected her general interest in developing a neighborhood interest in entertainment that had moral and ethical outcomes for the participant and the spectator and, also, was a form of theater that upheld the literary and artistic standards educated elites and professional critics endorsed. Drama clubs were established in accordance with the general approach to providing associations for different age groups and ethnic groups. They were open to all regardless of talent. In 1897 when Walter Pietsch, then head of drama at Hull-House, decided to improve the overall quality of Hull-House theater productions, he persuaded Jane Addams that the creation of a special group of Hull-House players who were selected on the basis of talent and artistic standards fit the goals of the settlement. Stuart Hecht, who has written about the Hull-House Theatre and the Hull-House Players, says that this was the first instance of a conflict between artistic standards and the purely social objectives of the settlement. Pietsch selected a star cast from the two hundred young people of both sexes who made up the eight to ten drama clubs that were part of the settlement's diverse drama groups. At the same time, however, social club dramatics continued to flourish at Hull-House alongside the separate, formal dramatics club. This club continued to be run by Pietsch until 1900 when Laura Daity Pelham replaced him and reorganized the dramatics club into an ensemble of actors who, in time, became a troupe recognized nationally and internationally. Pelham directed the Hull-House Players until 1925, when she died. The company continued until 1941. Maurice J. Cooney became director in 1924.

Traditional Drama Forum - No.8 September 2003 The Licensing Act 2003, England Since the report from Sarah Crofts in Traditional Drama Forum No.7 , the Licensing Bill has become the Licensing Act 2003 In the Lords on 3 July 2003, The Government offered an outright exemption to Morris dancing, and a questionably effective and marginal concession for the conditions that can be placed on the licence for unamplified live music in small pubs. This last minute Government amendment of an amendment is extremely complex - [Section 177 of the Act]. The person to contact for information on this is Dominic Tambling at the Department for Culture on 020 7211 6351. The Conservatives continued to support the small events amendment but the vote was 145 votes to 75. When the Bill was published it proposed a blanket licensing requirement for almost all public performance and much private performance. All performers were potentially liable to criminal prosecution unless taking all reasonable precautions to ensure venues were licensed for their performance. Lobbying, including an e-petition, has led to:

Students explore their own extracurricular interests too, through athletics, drama, music, special clubs, and vocationrelated groups.
http://www.villageprofile.com/wisconsin/westallis/westallis1.html
The West Allis Chamber of Commerce is proud of its vigorous business climate and is a strong advocate of community involvement. Its directory lists over 400 members covering everything from accountants to video productions. Commerce and industry are king and queen here. Since 1985, West Allis has consistently maintained unemployment rates below the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The current rate is less than 2 percent, less than half Milwaukee's 4.3 percent. The other side of the coin is that all this economic vigor leaves the residents of West Allis with a higher-than-average expendable income, or "buying power". West Allis residents have a per capita and household "Effective Buying Income" (EBI) exceeding the state and national average. West Allis' healthy economy has led to considerable commercial and industrial expansion. Several vacant industrial buildings in the older eastern industrial section of the city have been purchased and are either occupied or are being redeveloped. Vacant land in the western end of the city has been acquired for several commercial and residential projects. [Top of Page] West Allis boasts several art galleries. The City Hall Gallery is open to the public eight months of the year, free of charge. It exhibits local, state and national works of art, as well as shows for students and faculty of area art schools. The Gallery also exhibits works by local citizens and art associations at the annual Fountain Art Fair on Memorial Day Weekend. Other commercial art galleries are located in West Allis and in nearby communities.

Music and Drama
Music and drama are at the heart of the school. The recently opened theatre provides sound and lighting systems of professional standards, has an orchestra pit and retractable seating and is very flexible, accommodating both the intimate production in the round and the spectacular proscenium arch musical. Both music and drama are curriculum subjects and offered at A level. There are many clubs and music groups practising regularly in the lunch hour. The school has a well deserved reputation for its performing arts; annual productions operate on a grand scale and there are also performance opportunities for students at all stages of their development throughout the school year.

Girls of fourteen years and above are encouraged to participate in a scheme which provides individual challenges, including the demanding expedition, and encourages service to the community. Westholme students have distinguished themselves at all levels with many achieving the Gold Award.

Local school drama clubs prepare for new year
By Nicole Georgoff Staff writer Practices, performances and a trip to one of the world's most famous theaters are all part of a busy schedule for the local schools' drama departments. At Catoctin High School, and Thurmont Middle School, teachers and students alike are getting ready for their fall productions, and a new year of theatrical performances. Each school will have a fall and a spring production. As head of the drama department at Catoctin High School, Mrs. Karen Stitely teaches the 4 different levels of drama offered at the school and serves as drama club advisor. She also teaches several English classes throughout the year. Mrs. Stitely, who directs all the theatrical productions at Catoctin High School, has been teaching at Catoctin for 4 years. She received her bachelor's degree in Arts and Theatre at The Shenandoah Conservatory and also is certified to teach English. Mrs. Stitely is married to Bill Stitely, a local actor and artist, and has one son. Catoctin High School presents a play each fall, and puts on a musical each spring. This year's fall play will be A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. Rehearsals have started, and Mrs. Stitely said they are going "very well. We are halfway done blocking. The students seem to be excited about the production."

Madonna Rides The Wave
For over 16 years, the Queen of Pop has managed to stay on top.
By Michael Goldberg
Madonna is back. I know because she's on the cover of England's The Face, right as "Music," her new single, is rockin' the house in the clubs and on the charts.
I also know because "Music" itself is, as the British might put it, quite brilliant.
"Generally, it's music that kicks me into thinking a certain way or feeling a certain thing," Madonna told The Face 's Miranda Sawyer about her approach to songwriting. "...And I rely heavily on the people that I collaborate with to inspire me lyrically. Believe it or not, I'm at my most creative when I'm standing at a microphone and the pressure's on."
"Music" is all about an early '80s synth-disco sound, but its rhythm, though minimal and purposefully machinelike, feels very current and bold. When it shows up on the radio with Matchbox Twenty's "Bent," Joe's "I Wanna Know," *NSync's "It's Gonna Be Me" and 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite," this record stands out. "Hey Mr. DJ, put a record on/ I want to dance with my baby...," Madonna sings.
