Recently, I was asked by some very nice people at the Bristol 'Brief Encounters' short film festival if I would attend a seminar/workshop for three hours as a mentor or teacher (or whatever) for a group of (mainly) new film makers before they set out to complete a five minute film in three days.
Having worked in the film industry in some capacity since 1981, and having made a reasonable living as a drama and commercial DP since 1987, this still threw up a lot of conundrum wrapped in enigmas, as it were. What can you teach or advise in three hours to, at the time, three teams, that would actually be of benefit to their production.
Now, I thought it would be a decent (and maybe profitable) idea to put together either an on-line or printed guide covering all aspects of film and video production aimed at such beginners, but also make it professional enough for it to still be a useful source of advice and reference to more established lighting and camera people either looking at other disciplines or still at the early stages of their career, without being baffling or, dare I say it, condescending.

Howdy all..
I've been thinking of upgrading my skills so to speak and getting my head around using wheels and geared heads, figuring it will come in handy for remote head and maybe for drama..?
I know I can go to a rental house and burrow a head, but there's only so far I'm going to get learning that way, so now I'm thinking I should buy myself a head.
I'm finding it very hard to find out what kind of differences there are between heads though, so I'm hoping I might be able to lean on the experience here.
I have had a play with the Arri heads and they are obviously the nice way to go. I could stretch myself to buy one, but it seems like an extravagant purchase for a tripod..(or so my girlfriend says)
Even a MK1 is $9500US.

I've been a Senior Lecturer with the Drama Department at Stanford University since 1977. I live in El Granada California (that's just four miles north of Half Moon Bay), with my husband, Ronald Madson, and a Himalayan cat named Buddha. Our home in El Granada, which Ron built, overlooks the Pacific; it functions also as the California Center for Constructive Living. I was honored that at the 107th Stanford Commencement in 1998 I was awarded the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Distinctive Contributions to Undergraduate Education. This has special meaning for me in that it was based on letters from students who had found value in my classes.

Puppets are wonderful toys. They can teach both kids and adults all kinds of things. Why? Because folks tend to listen to puppets. Puppets are gentle, non-threatening friends that can do goofy things. They can be hilariously funny or poignantly sad. They can show a child how to brush his or her teeth just as well as they can teach about AIDS or how to do square roots.
We have some great children's poetry selections. These delightful poems are the perfect add on for any children's literature program. They are also a wonderful place to start looking for puppet script ideas.

KEEPING ABREAST OF
MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION MENTOR, MENTOR, ON THE NET
By George Heymont

There’s an old saying that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. But if you teach him how to fish, he will never starve. As the Internet has fostered the growth of an online MT community, many experienced medical transcriptionists have generously provided word help and technical tips to their colleagues in need using venues such as the KAMT-list, sci.med.transcription newsgroup and Arleen McGovern’s superb www.mtdesk.com website. Unfortunately, one of the basic misassumptions about the Internet is that the veterans in any profession who participate in various newsgroups, mailing lists and message boards have nothing else to do with their time except act as free reference sources to those who are too lazy to do their own research. Another misconception is that the designation of someone as a mentor is a unilateral decision. In other words, someone wishing to be mentored can arbitrarily choose who they think should mentor them without necessarily bothering to ask if that person has the time, energy or desire to commit to such a project. As a result, many veterans are confronted with a “Gimme, gimme, gimme” style of questioning which soon makes it obvious that the person asking all these questions is too lazy to pick up a reference book and find the answer. When a newbie is seen asking the same questions over and over again in different Internet venues – questions that can easily be answered in basic reference books with a minimum amount of effort – those who could be mentors often pull back and stop answering the newbie’s desperate pleas for assistance. Why? Because the whole point of mentoring is to teach someone how to develop the professional skills to survive on one’s own.

Do-It-Yourself Group Activities for Teenagers
by Cafi Cohen
Many homeschoolers find support for their interests in their communities. They join family and adult organizations like ski clubs, computer users groups, and Toastmasters. Other teens volunteer and work for pay. Some enjoy community youth-oriented groups like Scouts and 4-H. Our two teenagers were no exception. Jeff lived and breathed Civil Air Patrol Squadron. He edited the newsletter, served as squadron commander, organized encampments, prepared classes, and much more. He also trained with a U.S. Diving Team, sponsored by our local parks and recreation department. Our daughter, Tamara, split her time between volunteering with local drama groups and singing in a very active church choir. Both kids joined 4-H and church youth group. They were on the go almost every day, sometimes spending more time away from home than if they attended school. We were lucky. We lived in cities that afforded our teenagers rich opportunities to explore their interests and meet people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Our Philosophy To assist language arts teachers in providing exciting, hands-on, skill intensive activities for the language arts classroom. We believe the degree of language competence that a student achieves is directly related to the student's level of involvement in the activity. For decades educators have known that using hands-on activities is a more efficient teaching method than theoretical discussion. A woodshop instructor attempting to teach students the skills involved in building a table without allowing the students to use of rulers, hammers, and saws is destined to fail. The woodshop instructor could teach required skills piecemealmeasuring a board, sawing a board, driving a nail. Effective teachers, however, know that a project approach works best. For one thing, building a table is an activity that culminates in a practical producta table. Secondly, all the smaller activitiesmeasuring a board, sawing a board, driving a nailare obvious steps to reaching an easily understood goal. The student can easily see that these specific skills are necessary parts of the whole activitybuilding a table.

In fact the first music I listened to this morning was Janet Baker's wonderful recording of Cantata BWV 170 , which I have always loved.
Happy New Year to all of you, and I look forward to reading the postings this year.
[Les Cantates] wrote (February 25, 2003):
I am new in the list, but I would like to introduce our project: a group of (fairly) young period instrument players have set a regular Bach cantatas performance series in Paris, since March 2000.
Every 1 st sunday of the month, between October and June, we perform a Bach cantata, keeping fairly close to the Lutherian calender. The musicians, instrumentalists and singers, perform for the fun and the concert is free. On March 2 nd , we will have our third anniversary.
For the last three years, I have prepared concert notes, including French translation and comments. I would be interested to get in touch with Jean-Pierre Grivois to discuss some aspects of translation including "technical" vocabulary but mostly good taste in French cantatas texts. I don't know if you "store" the past discussions and if it is possible to have access to them still. In March we will perform Trauer-Ode BWV 198 ) and in April BWV 96 In allen meinen Taten ", a cantata among these without establisched destination which we use for these months when there was no cantata composed.
