The Historians Film Committee Focuses on the Presidency
In conjunction with the 118th annual meeting of the AHA held recently in Washington, D.C., the committee organized a panel, "The Presidency in Film." The panel was chaired by Peter Rollins, the current editor of Hollywood’s White House: The American Presidency as Film and History (Univ. Press ofKentucky) and The West Wing: The American Presidency As Television Drama (Syracuse Univ. Press). Gabriel Over the White House The audience was attentive to all three presentations and C-SPAN 2 broadcast the event live to the entire nation as part of its Booknotes series (also available as Tape 179862 from the C-SPAN Archive at Purdue University). Over the last six years, the sessions at the AHA annual meetings have been televised by C-SPAN, a public service of the Cable Association of America. Previous events featured, among others, filmmakers Ken Burns and Oliver Stone and scholars Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Garry Wills, and Robert B. Toplin. These televised sessions have helped spread the word to the general audience about what historians are doing to study motion pictures both as contemporary instruments of persuasion and as artifacts for study by later generations. The next two issues of will focus on "Latin America in Film" featuring guest editors M.K. Schoenecke (

Editorial: linda carroli ( lcarroli@eudoramail.com Our congratulations are extended to fineArt forum's Executive Editor Paul Brown. Together with Dr Charlie Gere and George Mallen, Paul has been successful in attracting funding from the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Board to research, document, contextualise and archive the history of the computer arts in the UK. The project will examine the period 1950 - 1980. The research team will be based at the School of History of Art, Film and Visual Media at Birkbeck, University of London and the project has received $US500,000 for three years. This project was developed during Paul's recent two year Australia Council New Media Arts Board Creative Fellowship. I hope this important project sets in train other, ambitious undertakings which engage, document and explore the history of computer, electronic and new media arts across geographies. More information about this project is featured below and, of course, in future issues of fAf. The special discounted subscription offer for Leonardo is still available to interested fAf subscribers. You can receive five issues of Leonardo and one issue of LMJ from $US57.60 - please see additional info directly following the editorial. This offer is open to all fAf subscribers worldwide.

Scope of this FAQ
A few of the newgroups listed have short descriptions that evidently were added by persons other than the proponents. Suggestions for additions to this FAQ are most welcome. Many thanks to those who saw earlier versions of this FAQ and added to or corrected the information posted earlier. And special thanks to the persons who wrote suggesting that I post a copy of this FAQ on the World Wide WebI have now done so here, http://learninfreedom.org/ed-newsgroups.html at my Web site, which has links to other information about on-line resources for self-education. Some of the newsgroups listed here are very inactive (possibly because they are not carried at many sites). Some are very active, with verifiable frequent postings from multiple countries. But in general the proportion of all Internet users who discuss issues on Usenet has been declining since 1997 as Web-based discussion boards and E-mail mailing lists have become more popular. For a more up-to-date picture of where people discuss education issues on-line, see this site's Discussion Groups about Education Reform and Home-Schooling page.

Markab, the Final Handling
200284 1100 GMT Game Level - Galactic and Sector Operations Treating our galaxy as a large flattened disc, one can imagine it divided into slices like a pie with the lines of "cutting" radiating from a central circle. The center circle is named SECTOR or "Central". The sliced wedge-shaped Sectors are further divided by slicing them horizontally thru the middle of the fat disc. Twelve wedge-shaped Sectors (of odd numbers) are on the "top" of this disc and twelve Sectors (of even numbers) are on the "bottom" of this disc. (Remember, there is really no "up" or "down" in space so this is purely for convention.) This pattern makes a way to coordinate and patrol the galaxy with back-up assistance in adjoining Sectors never too far away. In fact, by this pattern every Sector has six adjacent Sectors (including Central) for coordination purposes and back-up in case of need.
