There is no treatment to reverse the genetic abnormality that causes Down syndrome. However, many of the associated medical and developmental conditions can be addressed, enhancing the person's quality of life, improving developmental possibilities and increasing his or her life expectancy. Many health-care professionals may be involved in assessing and planning the course of treatment for a child with Down syndrome. Surgery may be required for cardiac or gastrointestinal abnormalities. Physical therapy and integrated special-education services help children with Down syndrome to make the most of their abilities and reach their potential. Children with Down syndrome usually respond very well to sensory stimulation, exercises to help their muscle control, and activities to assist their cognitive development. School helps children with Down syndrome to learn social, academic and physical skills that may allow them to attain a very high level of functioning and independence.

A common abnormality is caused by nondisjunction , the failure of replicated chromosomes to segregate during Anaphase II. A gamete lacking a chromosome cannot produce a viable embryo. Occasionally a gamete with n+1 chromosomes can produce a viable embryo. In humans, nondisjunction is most often associated with the 21st chromosome, producing a disease known as Down's syndrome (also referred to as trisomy 21). Sufferers of Down's syndrome suffer mild to severe mental retardation, short stocky body type, large tongue leading to speech difficulties, and (in those who survive into middle-age), a propensity to develop Alzheimer's Disease. Ninety-five percent of Down's cases result from nondisjunction of chromosome 21. Occasional cases result from a translocation in the chromosomes of one parent. Remember that a translocation occurs when one chromosome (or a fragment) is transferred to a non-homologous chromosome. The incidence of Down's Syndrome increases with age of the mother, although 25% of the cases result from an extra chromosome from the father. Click

Jump to Contents Home Birth Defects Advisory Committee Birth Defects / Genetic Disorders ... Resources Birth Defects and Genetic Disorders The following list of disorders is a small list and by no means encompasses all genetic disorders. The disorders listed are ones that are mentioned throughout our web site Abdominal wall defects are birth defects of the abdominal wall. There are two types of abdominal wall defects, omphalocele and gastroschisis.
Omphalocele results from the incomplete closure of the umbilicus. The birth defect involves the protrusion of abdominal organs such as the intestine and liver into the umbilical cord. A membrane always covers an omphalocele, although sometimes this membrane may rupture. A ruptured omphalocele may be mistaken for a gastroschisis. Infants with omphalocele may have other birth defects, including chromosomal abnormalities.   Gastroschisis does not involve the umbilicus. The birth defect results from the protrusion of intestine and sometimes liver outside of the abdomen. This defect usually occurs to the right of the umbilicus and never includes a covering membrane. Infants with gastroschisis tend not to have other birth defects. Gastroschisis is not associated with chromosomal abnormalities.
Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an X-linked inherited disorder of progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Becker muscular dystrophy is similar to the Duchenne muscular dystrophy except that the progression of symptoms is much slower. Onset of BMD is usually adolescence or adulthood. The disease is caused by changes in the gene that makes the muscle protein dystrophin. People with Becker have reduced levels of dystrophin. Without normal levels of dystrophin, muscle cells gradually die.

Causes of Genetic Health Problems
Inherited genetic diseases caused by abnormal groups of genes passed down from one generation to the next. Ex. CF, Phenylketonuria, and muscular dystrophy. Spontaneous Genetic mutations are caused by an error in DNA replication leading to a base substitution or an insertion or deletion of one or two base pairs from the DNA. Somatic genetic disease caused by the sudden appearance of an abnormal form of a gene in one part of the body. Ex. Cancer. Chromosomal Aberrations abnormalities of chromosomal structure. Ex. Down Syndrome.
Types of Defects
  • Genetic: caused by an abnormal gene or groups of genes. There are 3 types: Single mutant genes of large effect. (Mendelian disorders) Multifactorial inheritance: the defect is influence by genetic and environmental factors. Ex. Diabetes, Hypertension Chromosomal disorders. : abnormal chromosome or wrong number of chromosomes. Can result from a cellular "accident" or from a parent who carries a chromosomal aberration Congenital Defects: " born with" unusual growth or development.

Down syndrome (also called Down's syndrome ) encompasses a number of genetic disorders , of which trisomy 21 (a nondisjunction ) is the most representative, causing highly variable degrees of learning difficulties and physical disabilities . Overview
Incidence of Down syndrome is estimated at 1 per 660 births and is the most common chromosomal abnormality. It is a commonly known observation that maternal age influences the risk of conceiving a baby with the syndrome. At age 20-24, it is only 1/1490, while at age 40 it is 1/11. (Source: Hook EB. Rates of chromosomal abnormalities at different maternal ages. Obstet Gynecol Down syndrome is named after John Langdon Haydon Down , who first described the condition. It was originally called mongolism , after a perceived resemblance observed by Down between the faces of some of his patients with Down syndrome and the mongoloid race. This usage, like other medical terms used at the time, has become a term of abuse, and is now generally viewed as both offensive and medically meaningless.
