The uses the standard DES algorithm, which uses 2 bytes of salt and is limited to 8 character long or shorter passwords. Many operating systems now have a modular system, where different algorithms are usable. Extended DES , MD5, and BlowFish are modules provided by many operating systems.
The function creates a password hash from a plaintext password and a salt parameter. The salt parameter is used in different manners for each algorithm, but typically provides some "randomness" to the resulting hash. The salt parameter also is what determines the algorithm used. has the following declaration: char * crypt(const char * key , const char * salt is used for two main purposes inside of an application, creation of passwords, and verification of passwords. The standard technique for creation of passwords is to take the plaintext password from the user, create a random salt in the proper format, and call with those two parameters. The resulting string

Updated Info Packets are available from Customer Service for distribution. CLIN 0021AL: LT Auditor is no longer a required purchase with every copy of NetWare ordered from the PC LAN contract. Only order LT Auditor if you require audit trail capabilities. However, remember it will only run in an environment where NetWare is installed. For more information concerning the capabilities of LT Auditor, please refer to the January 1992 issue of Chips. UPS MOUSE PORT INTERFACE (CLIN 0009BA): The American Power Conversions mouse port interface for the UPS consists of a cable with one 6-pin mini DIN connector for PS/2 compatible mouse ports and one 9-pin RS-232 type connector. It is intended to be used in addition with the AC power cables to attach the system to the UPS. In conjunction with the UPS (CLIN 0009AA) and NetWare's UPS NLM or SERVER. CFG file, the mouse port interface provides UPS moni- toring capabilities. If the file server experiences a power outage, the UPS is activated and all users are notified that the system is on backup power. The approximate length the file server will remain active on battery power is indicated, and users are advised to logout of the system. At the time specified in the UPS NLM or SERVER. CFG file, the file server will systematically logout all remaining users and close all open files. This logical downing of the file server prevents a potential crash and/or abrupt closing of open files. A compatibility problem has been identified between the mouse port interface for the UPS, specific AST 486/25 systems (CLIN 0006AA/AB) and NetWare v3.x UPS NLM.

    Workstation Maintenance
The Workstation Maintenance group offers services for workstation (WS) users in the campus and maintains WS- and PC-pools, offered by RUS for students.
In accordance with the project's goals, these concepts and techniques for workstation main-tenance (WS-M) at MPA should be considered as typical for WS support in the campus. In principal, the WS-M group is endeavoured to apply concepts, which are evaluated by the RUS department Workstation Concepts.
For all supported WS platforms (DEC, HP, IBM, SGI, SUN) the following services will be offered:
    · Installation of the hardware
    · Installation and update of operating systems
    · User and resource management
    · Supervision of system integrity.
All kinds of advisory support is free of charge.
    Fields of Activities: Workstation Pool
Students have free access to a WS pool maintained by RUS. For their accounts a full range of UIDs is separately maintained by a specific kerberos server. Filespace is located within an own AFS-cell. Both services are offered to other pools in the campus.
To simplify the pool management, each client is replicated from a reference system image. All services are server based, e.g. mail is available via POP-mail from the central studbox.

Free Operating Systems Intro I've often heard the comment "Computers are smart".
I really think the credit should be placed where it's due: To the inventors, researchers, developers and programmers that make the thing useful. Actually, the computer isn't that smart at all. The only thing it can do is sense the presence or absence of a small electical impulse. The presence of an electrical charge is interpreted as a '1', and the absence of a charge is interpreted as a '0'. This is what the original programmers had to work with: Even a period, a space or a new line was represented with 1s and 0s! Almost impossible to work with, programmers had to come up with some sort of code or language that a human could understand easier. To develop a new programming language, they would also have to write a program, or code, that would automatically interpret the new language back to 1s and 0s that the computer could understand. Many different languages were developed but the early ones remained quite cryptic. Still, it was easier than writing 1s and 0s. Here's some Assembly Language:
