HISTORY
Who are the ogiek?
The Ogieks are an indigenous hunting-gathering community who live in Mau Forest, Mt. Elgon Region, Nakuru and other parts of Central Rift Valley of Kenya. The are nicknamed 'Dorobo' which means "poor people who cannot afford cattle" There is a controversy on the origins of the Ogiek with some earlier scholars thinking that the Ogieks are " probably the remnants of the Pre-Maasai people who occupied the Rift Valley and the adjacent areas before the arrival of the Maa Speaking people" The Ogiek now live in Rift Valley and more have been displaced from the forest. The remaining lot in Mau Forest has been ordered by the government authorities to leave the forest. The matter is still not resolved. The uniqueness of the Ogiek is on their linguistic facility and ability to adopt their neighbours language easily. This is the characteristic that has led some scholars and administrators to think that the Ogiek were not an ethnic group. They thought Ogiek were "outlaws from other tribes that had found refuge in the forest" and other misconceptions which saw them as 'dying remnant' of lawless poachers etc.
Way of Life
Traditionally we are hunters and gatherers. The forests provided us with water, meat, honey, fruits, vegetables, medicine and materials for our shelter and clothings. We also used forests as the theatre for cultural and religious activites.Young people were trained by their elders in the forests.Up to today forests are the basis of our survival however,as a result of interaction and displacement, nowadays we do some farming and keep livestock. The interaction has not always been our choice. We have been forced to rely on smaller portions of land. Moreover, brutal evictions and scattering by the Government has forced us to interact with other communities.Today our life is made extremely hard,we are barely able to survive as a community.

Once checked in you will board the morning flight to Lewa Downs. Upon arrival at Lewa Airstrip you will be met by a vehicle from the Lewa Conservancy and taken directly to the Craig Family residence - Wilderness Trails. Overnight at Wilderness Trails on a full board basis (including local beers, soft drinks and wines). Lewa Downs One of Kenya's original ranches, Lewa Downs has been the Craig family home since 1924 when the Craig grandparents came from England and began raising cattle here. Now incorporated in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, which includes Anna Merz's highly respected Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary and the Ngare Ndare forest, the area is committed to the conservation of the extremely diverse indigenous wildlife and habitat, as well as benefiting the local community by providing employment, schools and clinics. Set in stunning arid landscape Wilderness Trails is an oasis of comfort and tranquillity. Horseback safaris, on very gentle steeds, allow close encounters with the wildlife, while a camel safari is not to be missed! Other facilities include a lovely swimming pool of muted aquamarine that is far more in keeping with the landscape than a brighter colour would be. The side of the pool appears to drop away to the valley below permitting fabulous panoramic views. A large thatched pool house contains colonial style furniture, games, magazines and an array of the softest straw-coloured towels. The tennis court is also popular.

Kim Ellis-Josch Develops New Approach to Conservation
After working in East Africa for more than 15 years, Kim founded Tazama!Trust in 1993 to achieve a more holistic approach to conservation. While gaining an understanding of the interconnectedness of people, wildlife and the environment, Kim set out to raise awareness of the problems facing these entities and how to solve them. Today, she works throughout Tanzania on a wide spectrum of projects which support and empower Africans to save and protect wildlife and the environment while improving the quality of their lives.
From their base by Lake Eyasi where they keep in close contact with grass roots village life, Jeannette and David continue the work of conservation education through Tazama!Trust, teaching people of all backgrounds and levels in communities across Tanzania. Michael Lerner was a successful businessman who turned an early and avid interest in hunting and fishing into a mature scientific avocation. As an AMNH trustee he led expeditions to collect ethnographic objects and zoological specimens from all over the world. His greatest love, however, was the study and collection of big game fish. Lerner researched and recorded migration patterns of marlin and swordfish throughout the earth’s oceans and organized the International Game Fish Association. The Association was housed at the museum and kept track of record saltwater catches, and brought anglers from all over the world together for the purpose of promoting scientific, as well as sporting, interest in fishing.

This four-part series chronicles the dramatic history of America's struggle to educate all of its citizens and unite them as a nation. Ten years in the making, the series journeys through history and across the nation, weaving archival footage, on-site coverage, rare interviews and expert commentary into an unprecedented portrait of America's great education experiment. Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep narrates. "The Common School" (1770-1890) The first segment traces America's struggle to create a tax-supported system that would educate every citizen, rich or poor. The goal was to establish a common ground that would bridge differences and preserve the infant democracy.

Pastoralist Cosmology as foundation for sustainable peace and Development by Hadley H. Jenner
(Maasai Proverb) Introduction To adequately explore these links, however, it is necessary first to provide an overview of the present challenges facing pastoralists and move through a brief review of the pastoralist environment, economy, land policies, laws and the nature of common property systems. Such a review will provide the context for consideration of pastoral cosmology which will, in turn, be further illustrated by a summary of three case studies from Kenya. Key themes in the links between cosmology and these issues of conflict and change will emerge. Moreover, it will be demonstrated how the challenging situations facing pastoralists imperil pastoral cosmology. Yet it is that cosmology which offers the insights and resolutions to disarm the challenges while building a more sustainable future from that most commonly advocated. AFRICAN THEOLOGY AND THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN AFRICA [a work in progress] Presented to the Canadian Theological Society May 25, 2001 by Ian D. Ritchie, Ph.D. St. John's Anglican Church, 41 Church St., Kingston, ON., K7M 1H2 The paper assesses the role played by African theologians in advancing the status of women in Africa. The perception (common in western church circles) of the African church as a bastion of conservatism and patriarchy will be examined critically. Starting with a brief overview of gender in precolonial Africa, moving to an analysis of the influence of mission Christianity and the African Initiated Churches, the paper concludes with an evaluation of the influence of African theologians. The conclusion that Christianity may be moving African women towards equality more rapidly than in western societies speaks of a positive relationship between academic theology, church and society.[ An earlier version of this article formed a chapter of the author's 1993 doctoral dissertation, African Theology and Social Change.
