Our Montserrat Donkeys,  the real story
written by Barbara Tipson In 1999 an item of news came over the electronic evergreen, a  Montserratian newsgroup, about the feral population of donkeys.  Email debate raged between irate gardeners and homeowners and donkey supporters.
I had lived for 12 years in Montserrat until my home and business were effectively demolished by Hurricane Hugo, when  I  rehomed  my animals and came back to live in St. Lucia.  I  left behind a number of donkeys, mostly in care of farmers, with gardens in the  Soufriere hills, as I had lived and worked below Chances Peak, in the South of the island. After the volcano erupted in September 1997, WSPA had herded all the animals abandoned in the South into the safe zone. The safe zone is a small portion of the island, largely in the rocky, dry North and hard enough to farm in, without rampant donkeys destroying crops, and tearing washing off lines, and worse still, increasing in numbers every year.  WSPA rounded up the worst offenders, corraled them and started looking for solutions. I suggested to Jane that we could take a couple of them, as Jane has a big piece of land.  WSPA laughed and said they were thinking of 25 minimum, and that St. Lucia wasn’t really an option, so we asked the December edition of the

http://www.vbspca.com/pet_tips.html
Dogs are wonderful companions. So why are so many of them found in animal shelters? Why are so many people willing to part with the dogs that they bring into their homes? Studies show that there are several specific factors, all of which are potentially modifiable, that increase the likelihood of a dog being turned in to an animal shelter. Those factors are:
  • owners not participating in dog obedience classes after acquisition,
  • lack of veterinary care,
  • owning a sexually intact dog,
  • inappropriate care expectations, and
  • inadequately housebroken dogs.
At the Virginia Beach SPCA, we spay or neuter every dog before we release them into an adoptive home, so we've taken care of one of the five factors already, at least for VBSPCA dogs. Plus, we have adopters attend our adoption class when they pick up their animals, which hopefully provides them with at least slightly more realistic expectations. Now, we offer a one-time, one-hour session for you and your dog called "Getting to Know Your Dog". The class is free to anyone who adopted their dog from the VBSPCA or the Virginia Beach Animal Control shelter, and just $5 for the public. It covers some very basic obedience training, and shows you how to continue the process of creating an enjoyable and mutually respectful relationship with your dog. Check our calendar of events for the next class time. We also strongly recommend that you take your dog to obedience classes. Check your yellow pages for a list of local dog obedience trainers.

Most donkeys are very sweet and people oriented, though intact males are usually quite the opposite! There are three sizes of standard donkeys. From 36-40 inches they are classified as small standards, those between 40-48" are considered standards, and those ranging from 48-54" (jennets) 48-56" (jacks) are classified as large standards. Miniature donkeys are, obviously, somewhat smaller. Domestic donkeys come in a full range of colors, from black to white, in all shades of gray, and also in a pink shade known as pale straw roan. Bi and Tri-Colors do exist, although they are fairly rare. Donkeys have significantly larger ears than other equines and a coarse male and tail. They have a raspy bray, as the typical stereotype "aw-EE" suggests.

Foster Dogs or Cats
This means caring for homeless animals temporarily in your own home. This is the basis for Dreampower - as we have no "animal shelter". We occasionally need a retirement home for an animal. Food, supplies and vet care are provided by Dreampower. Dog runs, cat condos and pet kennels are often available for loan to volunteers.
Foster Small, Caged Animals
This could be rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, ferrets, etc. We try to help anything that comes our way. Appropriate space is necessary, depending on the animal. Cages are usually provided.
Foster Large Animals
This could be horses, donkeys, pot belly pigs, etc. We try to help anything that comes our way. Appropriate space and shelter is necessary, depending on the animal.
Weekend Adoption Fairs
Minimum commitment is one fair per month. Minimum age to volunteer without supervision is 16 years. Occasionally 14-15 year olds may volunteer without supervision after attending 3 fairs with a parent.
Humane Education
This work usually goes on during the day on weekdays. We offer presentations to school children on pet care and other important topics. Videotapes and other presentation materials are used. Usually, two volunteers travel to each classroom.

and am raising quality miniature donkeys. Usually there are a few available for sale. These 2 donkeys are just a sample of some I have raised and sold.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Donkeys!
Hi, My name is Bonnie Corrington and I've been raising miniature donkeys since 1993. Conformation and disposition are my #1 priorities. All my donkeys receive good health care and TLC - I raise them as pets, not livestock. To continue to give them individual attention, I keep my numbers down. I may not have a lot, but I am very proud of their outstanding quality and I think they are very special. I have excellent quality breeding stock for sale and also a few pet quality on occassion. The pet quality are, most often, geldings or very young jacks that will be gelded when they are old enough.
I occassionally break some to drive and would be happy to start one for you if requested.
I have greys, browns and spots at this time. As with all creatures, their dispositons vary. The range from quiet and laid back to more agressive and pushy for their attention, but all are very people oriented, handled a lot and friendly.
I enjoy seeing my donkeys go to good loving homes where they will be well cared for and enjoyed. Donkeys are friendly, loving animals and are fun to have around. Yes, there is work involved with taking good care of them, as with any animal/pet. To me, it is well worth the work because of the enjoyment they bring :).

Basic Donkey Needs All points mentioned for horse care apply to donkeys. Donkeys are able to manage on natural grass very well, and only require adequate grass to keep healthy. However, during drought or when grass becomes limited, their diet should be supplemented as advised for horses. Coarse native grass, paspalum and even less lush grasses will keep a donkey happy. Donkeys need roughage, so provide hay if natural roughage isn't available in pasture. As with horses, a plentiful supply of clean water is essential. A salt lick must be provided at all times. Mineral salt licks are the best. Extra Advice Roll Patch
Donkeys love rolling and it is good for them. You can, or Your donkey will cause a bare patch in the paddock where it rolls or you may choose to provide a sand heap for rolling. Company
Donkeys need and must have company. A visit once a week is not enough. Neglected donkeys become temperamental.

About Miniature Donkeys by Bobbe Leonhardy, Sundown Ranch, Sisters Oregon
The Brayer Magazine, May-June 1997 Issue
Miniature donkeys, sweet faced, soft eyed, shaggy, friendly and affectionate. They have won the hearts of most of those who have had the pleasure of being exposed to their charms. Today they are the beloved and often pampered pets of their owners, yet their history has not always been so kind to them. Originally from Africa, they arrived in the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Sicily to be beasts of burden. They pulled carts, carried loaded packs, and did other light farm work. Some accounts have it that hey were often underfed, over worked and not infrequently, abused.
The story of their miserable situation was told to a Mr. Robert Green, a New York stockbroker with a farm in New Jersey, who ordered six jennies and a jack, sight unseen, while on a trip to Europe. They arrived in New York in May of 1929. Unfortunately a few months after their arrival, they were attacked by dogs and three of the jennies were killed. The jack and remaining three jennies were the original foundation herd of miniature donkeys in the United States. One of the jennies was pregnant and on Columbus Day 1929, she gave birth to a little jack who was named Christopher Columbus, the first miniature donkey born in America.

You can easily see wild burros if you travel to Arizona. They live in the bottom of the Grand Canyon, around dependable water sources here and in many other states of the west. Some people do not know that Mammoth donkeys or Miniature Mediterranean donkeys exist so we have photographed them and will tell you more about them. We do not breed 'standard' sized donkeys, as there is no shortage of them, but we breed the sizes bigger and smaller. It is interesting, though, that both miniature and mammoth donkey's spots seem to have been borrowed from the standard sized ones, and then they have to work to get the spots back into the size they want. We also have our share of cats and dogs, many of whom are rescued. Animal lovers enjoy looking at other people's animals so we put up some pictures and stories about our pets. One of our dogs, Grudge, had an especially difficult start in life, and was rescued from a house with over 100 dogs INSIDE. I will put his story on the 'rescued animals' page, along with Daisy the starved pony-sized mule. We do not keep any animals besides domestic animals on our little ranch, and nothing but dogs, cats and equines. We rarely offer a litter of Papillon puppies, usually 1 to 3 puppies, because they are usually sold to selected retired people who like small, happy, healthy and easy to care for dogs. I spent 5 years as an animal control officer on the ' welfare squad ', so I am aware of the severe dog and cat overpopulation that is caused by NOT spaying and neutering dogs and cats, as well as (in my opinion), veterinarians who DO NOT offer low cost spay and neuter surgery, especially in poorer areas such as small rural towns. We try to do our part to pull some unwanted pets off the streets and offer them health and a good home.
