CULTURE The culture of the Dominican Republic today is the result of many different influences over the centuries. The language is Spanish and came about due to Spanish colonialism. The Catholic Church is the dominant religion. The Taino culture has influenced certain foods and medicines. And of course the African slave trade had a profound influence on the Dominican Republic. What stands out in the Dominican culture? Without a doubt dance and music stand out, and in particular marengue. No matter where you go in this country you will hear various styles of music and people dancing. Art is also very prominent in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has a long tradition of art. Many fine artists live in this country. If you have a chance stop by some outdoor markets or hit some of the galleries to see what is available. In Santo Domingo stop by the Museo de Arto Moderno.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean. Formerly a colony of Spain, it shares the island with Creole-French speaking Haiti, located at the western end of the island. Hispaniola is part of the Greater Antilles island group in the Caribbean and lies between Cuba to the northwest and Puerto Rico to the east. The Dominican Republic offers some of the most beautiful and diverse topography in the Caribbean. To give you and idea of its size, The Dominican Republic is larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands combined. The country's geography doesn't lend itself to easy classification. It is best to think of the Dominican Republic as a combination of highlands, lowlands, and highland valleys. Geographers have divided the country into twenty distinct regions. Two of the more interesting features include over 1,000 miles of spectacular, sun-drenched Caribbean beaches, plus the highest peak in the Caribbean region; Pico Duarte which rises to over 10,700 ft.

Dominican Republic History and Culture
History Christopher Columbus discovered the island on his first voyage to the Western Hemishphere in 1492 and named it Hispaniola, later to become the nations of the Dominican Republic. It was the earliest Spanish colony in the Western Hemisphere to be established. Haitians occupied the entire island from 1822 until 1844 when the Dominican Republic attained independence. Culture Western traditions have been a strong presence in the Dominican Republic eversince the Dominican Republic was first permanently colonized by the Europeans in the western hemisphere. Some of the old colonial buildings are still standing until today and a fine example is in Santa Domingo. Art, music and literature are developed in part of western patterns but equally strong is the African cultural strain. The African heritage is most noticable in the folk culture especially the music. Hence, these two traditions blend in the popular national song and dance.

Main article: History of the Dominican Republic The country has had a history of changing ownership, with Spain, France, Haiti, Spain again, and the United States taking their turns at ruling Dominican territory amid attempts at independence and self rule. The twentieth century was marked by repeated US intervention in local affairs. Apart from the history of US support for the Trujillo dictatorship (1930-1961), the most infamous example of this is the

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : ARTS AND CULTURE Architecture : a number of Dominican towns were founded by the Spanish colonists. Their centre is built according to the principal of traditional urbinisation in a checkerboard plan, right angled intersections and straight roads. The Spanish and Moorish influence is felt in the colonial towns. All the same, the Dominican towns have grown without much attention to esthetics nor practicality. Whether rich or poor, the dominican dwelling is principally individual and consequently the Dominican city is flat and very spread out. The classic wooden creol home is found outside the urban zones. Colourfully painted, they brighten up the Dominican countryside. Nevertheless one notices now a hardening of the country dwellings with houses made from concrete and cement, less authentic but more reassuring. The origins of merengue : music is an integral part of daily life and the Merengue is omnipresent in the country. At the same time music, folklore and dance, Merengue is the expression of a whole nation. Juan Luis Guerra is the best international representative of Merengue. The Bachata is a music and dance more popular and rural. Handcrafts
