Virgin Islands National Park, Saint John, United States Virgin Islands. Origins, Geography, and Vegetation Types Biologists and biogeographers have divided the dry land areas of planet Earth into eight major regions which are defined by the groups of related organisms that live within them. These divisions, while generally valid, are not as clear-cut as they might sound, at first. Their limits are marked mainly by natural barriers like oceans, deserts, or high mountain ranges, frequently insurmountable to many species of plants and animals. However, many organisms that are typical of, or most common in, a region still "spill over" adjacent ones. This they do temporarily (as happens during seasonal migrations), through naturally established and viable populations, or by means of man-made introductions. The oceans of the World can also be divided in biogeographic regions, though enough data to define clear boundaries is lacking, at the present moment. All the same, the Caribbean Sea may indeed be one of such distinct oceanic bio-regions.
