Alumni Service Trip
November 2-9, 2002 Are you interested in a meaningful, life-changing trip to a magnificent Caribbean island? In November you can join 10 other alumni for a week of community service, learning and adventure in Dominica, one of the most beautiful yet poorest island nations in the Caribbean. This will be JMU's third alumni trip to this tiny island of towering mountains, plunging valleys, and tropical beauty.
Alumni Volunteers plant trees to curb erosion
As one participant said about last year's trip: "The alumni service experience is something that you continue to learn from when it's over. These are memories that will last a lifetime." For more details contact: Rich Harris, Coordinator JMU Community Service-Learning e-mail csl@jmu.edu

Project abstract
  • In what ways does Marpin contribute to the production and reproduction of national identity in Dominica? How do messages communicated in the global media receive a local form and meaning? How are the apparent paradoxes described here, between the transmission of global culture and the ambition to contribute to local identity production locally, perceived? Do Marpin's activities contribute to the production of global identity rather than a national identity? Do Marpin's activities contribute to the production of defined spaces for the production of national identities?
  • Fieldwork will be carried out during 2001. It will take place both at the TV station as well as among selected groups of Marpin audiences in Dominica.

    ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS
GARNETTE JOSEPH, CARIB OF DOMINICA (1990-91) (DAII) focuses on assisting communities in their efforts to improve their quality of life through training, economic development and cultural preservation. The Carib Territory is the only designated Indigenous land base in the Caribbean and it was formed in l904. One of its priorities is recording Carib history and culture through interviews, documentation of oral stories, and the future establishment of a cultural resource centre and museum. Karifuna , the only Carib Indian cultural group in Dominica that teaches traditional dance and music and popular theatre to young Carib Indians. The group is based on the belief that the Carib culture must be preserved and taught to future generations. Development Alternatives said they selected Garnette "because of his keen interest in the history and development of his people. He has always been in the forefront in attempts at community development and has been instrumental in trying to maintain some of the cultural practices of the Carib people. He has always expressed an interest in further training which would strengthen his ability to serve his community." "I applied to take the Indigenous management program at SIFC because I could see that management skills were lacking within the community and this was a problem. We had tried different initiatives but these did not succeed because of our lack of administrative and management skills," said Garnette.

Dominica, West Indies – Community of Paix-Bouche This trip is part of an ongoing JMU partnership. JMU students and alumni have made 6 trips to Dominica. The first trip was in 1999. The f ocus this year will be on community development and cultural exchange. The ASB team will partner with Paix-Bouche residents in the activities and work throughout the week. This year we are working hard to meet several community needs and will be focusing on a cultural exchange component. Paix-Bouche has many young men in the community and we would very much like to relate to them more closely and increase cultural understandings between our groups. We strongly urge young men and students of color to consider this trip. If interested in this trip please go to our website (www.jmu.edu/csl/asb) and complete the Dominica information sheet and bring it to the Interest Meeting on Tuesday, October 16 at 8:00p.m. in Taylor 405. Trip Leaders are Brittany Williams and Laura Brobst.
