October 8, 2002. The Caribbean conjures an image of sea, sun, fun, beach, rum, and exotic life-style. To most visitors this is a region of exotic grandeur, where one can find the best sandy beaches, warm sunshine, a variety of the best cuisine, lively and exciting music, and some of the most extraordinary people. The Caribbean is also about tropical splendour, a rich and diverse cultural heritage and unimaginable landscapes and seascapes. But of all the islands in this warm and exotic archipelago, there is one that truly defines nature and tropical brilliance. Dominica , known as The Nature Island of the Caribbean , is in the centre of the arch of the Caribbean archipelago, nestled between the two French departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Its nature island image is derived from its vast tropical rainforests, its beautiful and amazing vistas and its world heritage status.

Dominica Where to Stay Hilton Caribbean Punta Cana Resort and Club Windstar Cruises Star Clippers Cruises ... Other Caribbean destinations Dominica likes to call itself the "Nature Island of the Caribbean, " and this island lives up to its eco-tourist publicity. Lush, tropical rain forest blankets much of the island, the Morne Trois Pitons National Park alone covering about 17,000 acres. In a landscape straight out a hiking boot commercial, trails bordered by large ferns and wild orchids lead to waterfalls, rivers – and one of the world's largest boiling lakes. It's a birdwatcher's paradise, home to rare Sisserou and Jacquot parrots and numerous, stunningly colored hummingbirds. Dominica (pronounced Dom-in-EEK-ah) is sometimes confused, at least by postal clerks, with the much more populous Dominican Republic about 500 miles away, but if its wilderness you're looking for, this is the one to remember. Field Notes DIVING CULTURE Carnival celebrations on Dominica are more loosely organized than, say, Trinidad's, and that's a large part of their charm. The two-day fete of calypso and street jump-ups leading up to Ash Wednesday features street parades of colorful costumed bands on Monday and "T-shirt bands" on Tuesday. And if you can't attend Carnival itself, check out the weekly "Stardom" and "Band Splash" events that showcase Calypsonians and bands preparing for the event.

Sea Cliff Cottages
Dominica
Welcome to Sea Cliff Cottages, located on the lush nature island of Dominica. Experience the beauty of a tropical Caribbean night as you sit on your private balcony watching the moonlight on the palms and the shimmer of the sea below you. The cottages will provide you with all your needs for short or long term stays and you can relax in comfort surrounded by flowers with the sounds of the sea in the background. Located on the dramatic northeast coast, Sea Cliff is only a 15 minute drive from Dominica's main airport, Melville Hall. An afternoons drive can take you through the Carib Territory and on up into the natural beauty of Dominica's rainforest. Closer to home there are numerous hiking paths to explore or you can refresh yourself in the natural bathing pools found in nearby rivers. A secluded waterfall just a short distance away provides a delightful setting for a picnic and swim. Just below the cottages is Hodges Bay. Protected by a series of small islands, it is one of the better beaches in the area. In addition, the Hodges River empties into the sea at this point and is a favourite spot for children to play, and for rinsing off the salt after an ocean swim. Woodford Hill beach, Turtle beach and the beautiful Pointe Baptiste beach are also within walking distance. Hodges Beach For those who wish to dive, there is a five star PADI dive centre located twelve miles away, in the village of Portsmouth, which offers certification courses as well as day and night diving. Session III: Arts, Crafts and Cultural Industries Strategies
Presenters:
  • Marybelle Mitchell, Executive Director, Inuit Arts Foundation, Canada Raymond Lawrence, Chief Cultural Officer, National Culture Council, Dominica
This session focussed on how various strategies in the cultural sector can be directed towards community, social, and economic development. The impetus for this session was the South African example, where crafts and artisanal products are at the basis of a cultural industries strategy for rural development and part of the overall government efforts in the post-Apartheid environment. Two examples, a Canadian experience and a small-island perspective, offer an illustration of how cultural industries can be a tool for development. The first presentation was made by Marybelle Mitchell whose organization is owned and controlled by Inuit artists. She spoke at a concrete level of the development of the stone carving industry in Inuit communities . The Canadian Arctic has a small population base, approximately 48,000, scattered over a large land mass. Due to the high level of underdevelopment there are virtually no jobs, no internal trade, inefficient and expensive transportation, and minimal communication networks. Efforts have been made over the years to develop viable industries, but most have failed.

CULTURE The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad.
