Culture
Despite Dominica's political affiliations and choice of measurement standard, the French have had a more lasting influence on the island than the British. This can be seen in the predominance of Roman Catholicism, the widespread use of French-based patois, and the commonness of French place names. African, West Indian and native Carib traditions all contribute to a Creole culture, resulting in mix of language, food, art and customs. Common sights include Carib dugout canoes, stilt houses, Rastafarian dreadlocks, and red, green and yellow African clothing. Dominica has a thriving music scene, centered mainly around reggae, calypso and zouk. Cricket and soccer are the most popular sports. Dominica's most celebrated author, Jean Rhys, was born in Roseau in 1890. Although she moved to England at age 16 and only made one brief return visit to Dominica, much of her work draws upon her childhood experiences in the West Indies. Rhys touches lightly upon her life in Dominica in her books Voyage in the Dark (1934) and her autobiography Smile Please

Dominica is one of the Windward Islands and is located between two French administered islands, Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to its south. The soil formation is of volcanic origin and it possesses a mountainous terrain. The highest point is Morne Diablotins, but it has several other mountainous terrains. It has a lush green colour as there is plenty rainfall especially in the mountain areas. It also has many small rivers and a Boiling Lake, from which sulphurous gases frequently escape. The government promotes sustainable management of the forests to help protect the island's biodiversity. Roseau is the capital of Dominica and the chief port. The majority of people there are of African descent, brought over from there during the eighteenth century. There are also a number of Carib Indians who live on the island. English is the official language of the island, but a great number of people speak the French dialect, Patois. Roman Catholicism is the main religion, which accounts for more than three quarters of the inhabitants followed by the Protestant church.

B rilliant! Amazing! Wow! Were some of the adjectives racing through my mind as I listened, first to Dominica's lady of song Ophelia Marie, then watched in complete amazement as dancers from the Castle Bruce Cultural Group bedecked in the lively colors of the madras danced and glided to the symphonic sounds of Dominica's Jing-Ping.
This stunning display was not taking place in Dominica, in fact, it was unfolding thousands of miles away in Miami. It was a celebration of Dominica's Independence as a proud and growing Nation.

    Dominica's Unique Culture
Like many Caribbean islands, Dominica has been influenced by different cultures over the course of its history. Originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians, colonised by Europeans (the English and French in particular), injected with a strong African influence during the 18th century, then flooded with American television in recent years, Dominica's culture is as multi-faceted as the madras fabric worn as traditional dress.

Tropical fruits and vegetables are in abundance, and not surprising for an island, our range of seafood is second to none! Particular delicacies you should try include 'mountain chicken' - a large frog (in season only); our delicious locally grown coffee; and a wide range of local fruit juices. Be sure to take home with you our hot pepper sauce!

Dominica - Culture D ominica - a heaven for the ecology sensitive minds. It is an Island inhabited by people speaking the English language. Please keep in mind that it has nothing to do with the Dominican Republic Everything is here: mountain s and valleys covered with rain forests, exotic fauna and flora , waterfalls roaring down precipitous heights It is these environment attractions that have made hiking, exploring, biking, climbing and other mountain associated sports so popular among Dominica's visitors. Another favourite past-time and major tourist attraction: abundant ship wrecks scattered around the coral reef make this activity irresistible and very rewarding. Click To Go Back

Dominica Largely rural, uncrowded and unspoiled, Dominica touts itself as a 'non-tourist destination' for divers, hikers and naturalists - partly because it lacks those white-sand beaches so favored by holidaymakers to the Caribbean. The island's main attractions work up a sweat. It has a lush mountainous interior of rainforests, waterfalls, lakes, hot springs and more than 200 rivers, many of which cascade over steep cliff faces en route to the coast. The only real way to experience this fabulous terrain is to pull on your hiking boots and start walking. Apart from its natural splendours, including the highest mountains in the Eastern Caribbean, the island has an interesting fusion of British, French and West Indian cultural traditions, and is home to the Eastern Caribbean's largest Carib Indian community. Excerpts taken from 'Our Island Culture'
The following is an outline of these folk dances which have grown out of the life of the people who danced them and so, like language, reveal something of their customs, habits and work. QUADRILLE
: A square dance of French origin. Four couple dance opposite and with each other. In the original Quadrille there are five separate and complete figures. The whole forms a set of Quadrille. This can take some time to complete, and since most are now done as public performances rather than for personal amusement, a number of sets are usually cut out. The pace of the quadrille has naturally been quickened and among the types danced today are the 'Sharp' 'Slow', 'French' and 'Irish' Quadrilles. LANCERS : This is a later quadrille which came via Britain in the 1830's and contained familiar figures from the traditional English dances and Scottish and Irish reels. It was popular with the military and the steps of the male have a more stiff and formal pace.
