Rich or poor, young or old, Asian or North American, straight or gay, domestic violence affects people from all walks of life. Domestic violence happens because an individual chooses to use violence to resolve conflicts or to control other members of their family. Contributing factors are societal attitudes toward women and violence in general feelings of low self-esteem, poor communication and self-control skills, and a tendency to blame others. Many women do not realize that:
  • They have been abused Domestic violence is a crime Violence is not an intrinsic part of any culture No one has the right to abuse anyone Help is available for both victims and abusers
For mothers involved in an abusive relationship, it is important to be aware of the impact violence can have on their children. Domestic violence is about one person getting and keeping power and control over another person in an intimate relationship. The abusive person might be your current or former spouse, live-in lover or dating partner. A psychologist and law school professor who is an expert in domestic violence has described it as "a pattern of behavior in which one intimate partner uses physical violence, coercion, threats, intimidation, isolation and emotional, sexual or economic abuse to control and change the behavior of the other partner." GENERAL FACTS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Nearly 2 in 3 female victims of violence were related to or knew their attacker. (Ronet Bachman Ph.D., U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, "Violence Against Women: A National Crime Victimization Survey Report," January 1994, p. iii) Over two-thirds of violent victimizations against women were committed by someone known to them: 31% of female victims reported that the offender was a stranger. Approximately 28% were intimates such as husbands or boyfriends, 35% were acquaintances, and the remaining 5% were other relatives. (In contrast, victimizations by intimates and other relatives accounted for only 5% of all violent victimizations against men. Men were significantly more likely to have been victimized by acquaintances (50%) or strangers (44%) than by intimates or other relatives.) (Ronet Bachman Ph.D., U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, "Violence Against Women: A National Crime Victimization Survey Report," January 1994, p. 1) Almost 6 times as many women victimized by intimates (18%) as those victimized by strangers (3%) did not report their violent victimization to police because they feared reprisal from the offender.

General Information About Domestic Violence
How 'domestic violence' is defined Disagreements develop from time to time in relationships. Domestic violence is not a disagreement. Domestic violence encompasses a wide range of acts committed by one partner against another in an intimate relationship. This may occur in a variety of relationships: married, separated, divorced, dating, heterosexual, gay or lesbian. Violence of a particularly injurious nature is primarily perpetrated by men against women. Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors, some causing physical injury, others not, some criminal, others not, but all psychologically damaging. Frequently, domestic violence includes threats of violence, threats of suicide, or threats to take children from the abused person. It may also include breaking objects, hurting pets, yelling, driving recklessly to endanger or scare the abused person, isolating family members from others, and controlling resources like money, vehicles, credit, and time. The goal of an abusive person is to establish and maintain control over his or her partner
