Dolphins more than IMAX eye-candy
By BRUCE KIRKLAND
Toronto Sun MacGillivray Freeman's Dolphins is an IMAX movie that finds and maintains the perfect balance of spectacular images and solid science. Finally! Too many of these big-screen, large-format, eye-candy things play to the lowest common denominator, emphasizing entertainment at the expense of education. Even Freeman's own Everest and The Living Sea suffer slightly. But Freeman smartly ups the ante in Dolphins without getting preachy. There is more information and more science. Complex issues of evolution, behaviour and conservation are discussed with intelligence. All without sacrificing the considerable entertainment value of the film.

Dolphins 1
Dolphins are mammals, not fish. They are warm blooded like man, and give birth to one baby, called a calf, at a time. At birth, a bottlenose dolphin calf is about 90-130 cms long and will grow to approximately 4 metres, living up to 40 years. They are highly sociable animals, living in groups, called pods, which are fairly fluid, with dolphins from other pods interacting with each other from time to time. Dolphins carry their young inside their womb for about 12 months. The baby is born tail first, and its mother will feed the calf for up to 2 years. However, the calf will stay with its mother for between 3-6 years, during which time it will learn all about feeding techniques, social interaction and group hunting. Dolphins
Dolphins are mammals. They breathe air, are warm blooded, give live birth to babies and nurse their young. The scientific order 'Cetacea' is comprised of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. These aquatic creatures are the most specialized of all mammals, with adaptations that allow them to spend their entire lives in water. Living cetaceans are divided into two distinct suborders, Mysticeti and Odontoceti, which are divided further into a total of thirteen families. The Mysticeti suborder contains those whales, which have baleen plates instead of teeth. A baleen whale feeds by straining water through the baleen, trapping the fish, shrimp, crustaceans, or krill inside its mouth. This suborder is comprised of the largest whale species, including the blue whale, the humpback whale, and the grey whale. Dolphins emit pulses of sound from the melon, a fatty area just below the blowhole. Much like the orientation vocalizations of a bat, these pulses, or clicks, return as echoes when the sound bounces off objects in the dolphin's path. The animal uses the echoes to navigate and to judge the distance to, and location of, prey as small as shrimp. Dolphins also produce whistling sounds when excited or communicating with other dolphins. These sounds arise from the larynx. Dolphin (aquatic mammal), fast-swimming animal related to whales and porpoises. Sleek and powerful swimmers found in all seas, dolphins are distinguished from porpoises by well-defined, beaklike snouts and conical teeth. The porpoise has a blunt snout, chisel-shaped teeth, and a stouter body.

Ocean and Oceanography:
A great body of salt water comprising all the oceans and seas that cover nearly three-fourths of the surface of the earth, and the scientific study of the physical, chemical, and the biological aspects of the so-called world ocean. The major goals of oceanography are to understand the geologic and geo-chemical processes involved in the evolution and alteration of the ocean and its basin, to evaluate the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere so that greater knowledge of climactic variations can be attained, and to describe how the biological productivity in the sea is controlled.
The world ocean covers 71 percent of the earth's surface, or about 361 million square kilometers, or about 140 million square miles. Its average depth is 5000m or 16,000 ft., and its total volume is about 1,347,000,000 cubic km, or 332,3000,000 cubic miles!

139. Whales & Dolphins
The Topic Whales dolphins. Be sure to visit the companion webpage to this project that is titled Species of Whales and dolphins.
http://www.42explore.com/whale.htm
The Topic:
Looking for information and pictures on a specific species or type of whale or dolphin? Be sure to visit the companion webpage to this project that is titled Species of Whales and Dolphins . There you will find so many more websites that it was necessary to break them off onto their separate webpage. Easier - Whales are group of large sea animals that look like fish, but are not. They are really mammals. Another sea animal group related to whales but smaller in size are dolphins. Dolphins have a snout shaped like a beak. Dolphins should not be confused with the brightly colored ocean fish of the same name. A third related ocean animal is the porpoise with a rounded head and a short, blunt snout. The porpoise is smaller than both whales and dolphins. Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are all mammals that breathe air and are members of the whale family. Harder - Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are all members of the scientific order cetacea (Pronounced: suh-TAY-sha). As cetaceans, they are warm blooded, bear their young alive. and the babies nurse their mother's milk. Cetaceans live entirely in water but must breathe air through their lungs. They have fishlike bodies with a thick layer of fat or blubber to keep them warm. Cetaceans also have flippers for front limbs, but do not have hind limbs. Unlike most other mammals, they have very little body hair.
