I need you like this hole in my head dolphins
By Ross Anthony How can you not like a film about dolphins? Surfin' the waves, jettisoning into the air, squeakin', clickin', and clappin' those little fins. Who doesn't like dolphins? Having always seemed to miss a "herd" of dolphins leaping in the distance off the coast of California, I looked forward to these playful water-dynamic mammals captured in the aquarium of the IMAX screen. Primarily a documentary, the film visits several marine biologists (M.B.) in efforts to learn more about these friendly flippers. One M.B. studies the physics of the fin, but doesn't explore it in any great depth. Another M.B. attempts to decipher language and still another probes intelligence. One of the most fascinating theories is that that these animals confer before leaping. The implication: they discuss the matter under water then create a surface-splattering jumping display as a group.

By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent
Some whales, dolphins and porpoises are now so endangered they could vanish within a decade, scientists say. Cetacean diversity, like all biodiversity worldwide, is crumbling
William Perrin, IUCN The warning comes from an international group of cetacean experts at IUCN-The World Conservation Union. They say species like the baiji (the Yangtze River dolphin) are unlikely to last for another 10 years. Other small cetaceans and several of the great whale species are almost as endangered, they believe. The experts issue their warning in Dolphins, Whales and Porpoises: 2002-2010 Conservation Action Plan for the World's Cetaceans. The plan is the third of three written by IUCN's Cetacean Specialist Group (CSG) in the last 15 years. Help for the overlooked It lists the 86 recognised cetacean species, from the whales of the high seas to the small and increasingly seldom-seen freshwater species in southern Asia and Latin America.

Book Author: Scott O'Dell Created August 6, 1999 Revised February 2000 Shelly Morales smorales@driscollisd.esc2.net Menu Introduction The doors burst open as your red-faced editor flies into the sleepy newsroom of the National Inspirer. "This is the hottest thing since yesterday's temperature! They've discovered a woman on an island off the coast of California!" he huffs as he tosses a folder of information on your desk. "Wait a minute, Chief,' you counter. "There are probably a whole lot of women living on islands. Why is this so special?" You don't understand!" he explained. "She's been living there alone for over 20 years! They found her wearing some kind of skirt made out of bird feathers. She's had NO contact with civilization in all this time! I want our whole news team out there covering this. We're going to devote an entire issue to this!" Your eyes widen as you realize what a story this is. "We'll get right on it!" you yell as you summon the other staffers for a meeting. Back to Top Task "This is the opportunity of a lifetime," the Chief tells the assembled members of your team, which includes the science editor, fashion editor, feature editor, history editor, nutrition editor, and yourself, the managing editor. "We are going to cover all facets of this story, with each of you reporting in your particular specialty. I want reports about what she eats, wears, how she lived, the history of her island, the native habitat there, and all of you will be putting your heads together to write an editorial about the Russians and Aleuts victimizing her people. Each of these needs to be a full length story which we'll then put into our tabloid format using our new Pagemaker software. I want graphs, charts, maps and/or pictures to go along with each story. Right before the paper goes to print, I want a debriefing from all of you about your stories and what you found out. Click on your clipboard to find a detailed job description for each position."

Previous News for May 2004 Next The turbulent life of dolphins
18 May 2004 Japanese physicists have discovered why dolphins are able to swim so quickly and smoothly through water. Yoshimichi Hagiwara and colleagues at the Kyoto Institute of Technology found that the unusual skin of the dolphin which flakes off and is completely replaced every two hours plays a crucial role in helping reduce drag effects. The results could help engineers design energy-efficient boats, ships and submarines (H Nagamine et al. J. Turbulence
Any body or object moving through water experiences both friction and so-called form drag due to the pressure of water against it. The streamlined shape of the dolphin obviously helps it to glide through water. However, until now it was not known if the way that the skin of the dolphin flakes off a process known as desquamation also helped to reduce drag. To investigate this, Hagiwara and co-workers built computer models that simulated how a dolphin's skin interacts with turbulent water flow and how it flakes off. They calculated that the undulating shape of the skin helps to reduce drag. More importantly, they found that the flakes of skin shed by the dolphin lower the drag by reducing the number of vortices that form around the dolphin as it moves through water. Unchecked, these vortices would reduce the dolphin's speed.
