Tim Cahill chats about the IMAX film "Dolphins"
    March 14, 2000

Web posted at: 5:00 p.m. EDT
(CNN) Founding editor of "Outside" Magazine and best-selling author Tim Cahill joined Nature chat on Monday, March 13, 2000 to discuss his new project, an IMAX film entitled, "Dolphins." He is also the author of "National Geographic's Dolphins," a book, written in conjunction with the IMAX production. Both projects use science and breathtaking photography to tell the story of marine biologist Kathleen Dudzinski and her work researching the communication habits of wild dolphins. Mr. Cahill participated in the chat at the CNN.com studio. A typist was provided for him. The following is an edited transcript of the chat. Chat Moderator: Thank you for joining us today, Tim Cahill, and welcome!

Dolphin Theme Page GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are small cetaceans that have a long, beaklike snout, a falcate (sickle-shaped) dorsal fin, and sharp teeth. They are Odontoceti (toothed whales) and have one blowhole. These dolphins live in small groups called pods. SIZE The bottlenose dolphin grows to be at most 12 feet (3.7 m) long, sometimes weighing more than 1,400 pounds (635 kg). Most are smaller than this. SHAPE AND FINS Bottlenose Dolphins have stream-lined bodies and a rounded head with a distinctive beak. They have a tall, falcate (sickle-shaped) dorsal fin and broad, slightly pointed flippers.

Marine Mammals Signature Whistles of Tursiops truncatus
Dolphins live in unique societies, in which there are several subgroupings of individuals. The groups are fluid, with smaller subgroups being more stable. The stability of the subgroups is thought to promote social bonds between individuals. Individuals within these groups are often out of sight of each other, and therefore need a way of maintaining communication. Dolphins produce three types of sounds: broadband clicks used in echolocation; broadband burst pulses; and whistles. Whistles are frequency modulated narrow bands of sound, which are thought to be used as a nametag for each individual dolphin (Caldwell, Caldwell and Tyack 1990). Caldwell et al. (1990) described a hypothesis in which captive dolphins would produce individually distinctive and stereotyped whistles. These whistles were named signature whistles due to their individually distinctive features. This webpage will discuss the structure and possible function for signature whistles in the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus . Various suggestions for the use of signature whistles have been developed, one of which is that signature whistles enable bottlenose dolphins to maintain a complex social structure, due to their ability to communicate and identify one another.

They are mammals which means they are warm-blooded, they have at least a few hairs on their bodies, and they nourish their young with milk. Cetaceans spend their whole lives in water and some live in family groups called "pods." Order Cetacea
    Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises
This order of wholly aquatic mammals occurs in all the oceans and adjoining seas of the world, as well as in certain lakes and river systems. Living cetaceans are traditionally divided into two suborders: the Odontoceti, individuals of which have teeth (generally all of one kind) and an asymmetrical skull and which comprise the families Iniidae, Lipotidae, Pontoporiidae, Platanistidae, Delphinidae, Phocoenidae, Monodontidae, Ziphiidae, and Physeteridae; and the Mysticeti, individuals of which have plates of baleen, instead of teeth, and a symmetrical skull and which comprise the families Eschrichtidae, Balaenopteridae, Balaenidae, and Neobalaenidae. Rice 1984) considered the Odontoceti and the Mysticeti to be distinct orders, because it is questionable whether the two groups had a common origin and because the differences between them are as great as those between some of the universally recognized orders of mammals. Certain authorities, such as Ellis 1980), have followed Rice's procedure. Gaskin 1976), however, summarized data supporting a monophyletic origin for cetaceans and treated the Odontoceti and Mysticeti as suborders. The latter procedure also is supported by new cytological data (

    Sounds of whales and dolphins
    [Home]
[Preview-Index] [Links] [Report] Dolphins and whales have voices, but it's a lot different from most other mammals. The limited visibility under water made sounds and hearing very important for them. The sounds of the whales are not produced with their mouth/beak but only inside their blow-hole. They also use frequencies that reach far beyond our hearing capabilities. Of course they can also hear these higher frequencies. Just as we, whales use sound to communicate. Large whales can communicate over very large distances (several hundred kilometers!) using very low frequencies. Dolphins usually use higher frequencies which limits the distance. Tooth whales use sound not only to communicate, but also to "see". Similar to bats they send out sounds and listen to the echo that comes back from objects (like fish or rocks). This kind of SONAR (SOund NAvigation Ranging) works very well. Even in complete darkness they can find their way through the ocean and also find their food. When you listen to the sounds you will usually hear two kinds of sounds. One that sounds like whistling (high pitched sounds) and one that sounds like a rattle or clicking. In general the whistles are for communication and the clicks is the SONAR.
