Whales and Dophins
Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals. They are mammals because they have lungs not gills, they have hair not scales , and they also have give live birth and don't lay eggs. There are only about 80 kinds of whales and dolphins that we know of right now.
Whales
Whales are very large animals. They can grow up to 100 ft. or more in length. They can weigh up to 200 tons or more. Whales live in families called pods. These pods vary in numbers and consist of family members and family friends. Whales live in these families their whole life. Group living is safer when other whales or sharks attack. It also makes it easier to find food. Whales are always migrating. They travel to find food, breed and have young. Whales do not have eyelids. They rely on thick oily tears to protect their eyes. Whales hear from little holes behind their eyes. Whales talk to each other by making high pitched sounds like whistles, clicks, squeaks, rattles, and groans.

Where the Wild Things are Our playground, the rural Waianae Coast of Oahu, Hawaii, offers many different kinds of marine life including dolphins, whales, turtles, tropical fish, spotted eagle rays, sponges, and coral reef inhabitants to name a few. The Waianae Range is on the west coast of Oahu, Hawaii. It is largely shielded from the rains brought into the islands by the Northeasterly bearing trade winds by its neighbor, Koolau Volcano. This makes Waianae much drier than the Koolaus, particularly on its westward (leeward) slopes. This dryness keeps runoff to a minimum and thus, some of the clearest water in Hawaii is found at the beaches of the Waianae coast. This area is also reputed to have the most extensive coral reefs and marine life in the Hawaiian Islands. It's not surpirsing then that there is fascinating marine life all along the Leeward Coast. The Northwestern tip, at Ka'ena Point appears to be a magnet for marine mammals. We are currently conducting research to determine the extent of this phenomenon. Click on the links below to learn more about some of the creatures we have become quite friendly with.

1130 17th Street NW Washington DC 20036 SAVE THE DOLPHIN-SAFE TUNA LABEL! The Dolphin-Safe Tuna Program and Ocean Wildlife Are Under Attack The Bush Administration is trying to weaken the definition of the dolphin-safe label on tuna cans and pouches despite broad bipartisan public support for the program. The proposed changes to this successful program would allow tuna caught using the harmful practice of chasing and setting nets on dolphins to be labeled "dolphin-safe. " This policy has the potential to devastate dolphin populations, especially three dolphin populations in the Eastern Pacific the northeastern offshore spotted, the eastern spinner, and the coastal spotted – which have all seen their numbers plummet as a result of dolphin-deadly fishing practices. Other Marine Wildlife Is In Jeopardy Scientists worldwide recognize that large-scale industrial fishing techniques such as purse-seining, longlining, and drift-netting are devastating our oceans and the countless wildlife species that live within them.

Dolphin Sisters
"We have the same oceans in our veins,
are sisters to the trees and rocks and stars,
hold their identical minerals in our bones.
One family."
- Elsa Gidlow One of the absolutely best parts of swimming with dolphins is connecting with my dolphin sisters. As I have come to know the dolphins and the qualities in them I admire so much, I find these same characteristics in many of the women I meet who are connected to dolphins. These are qualities of love, trust, understanding, compassion, and gentle strength. I have many dolphin sisters who had not swum with dolphins when I first met them and others who still have not, even now. Most of my dolphin sisters are fully connected with dolphins on all levels, especially the physical. However, it makes no difference, because they all have the dolphin heart.
