CLOTH DOLL ORIGINALS BY SHER MILLER Dollmaking Tips WELCOME May I Introduce Myself? Faith Family Values and Pride ... Links PAINTING DOLLS Many dollmakers choose to paint a skintone on their dolls that may be more realistic or desireable in color than the fabric they have chosen. If you have never painted fabric before, you'll soon find that the paint will change the texture, making your fabric stiff. If you don't like the result, simply get a fine grit sandpaper and carefully sand your doll. Rough sanding may result in torn fabric. Before you start to paint you should prepare your surface! Preparation is really an individual choice. Some dollmakers prefer to spray their dolls with stiffener or starch. Others may choose to use a clear sealer (you can purchase inexpensive sprays in the spray paint aisle of your favorite discount stores for 99 cents). My personal preference is gesso, which is more expensive but gives a smoother service. If you don't first prepare your doll, the finish you get will be uneven in color. If you are painting face detail, your colors will run and/or blur.

75. HAMILTON EYE WAREHOUSE - EYES FOR PORCELAIN DOLLS
Glass paperweight eyes for porcelain dollmaking.
http://www.vcnet.com/hamilton/
Glass Paperweight Eyes for Porcelain Dolls
Thank you for inquiring about our SOLID GLASS PAPERWEIGHT EYES, used in the making of porcelain dolls . All of our glass eyes have been specially designed and hand crafted for us according to our specifications. We say "hand crafted" because they, like your hand crafted dolls, have been meticulously "hand made" to show the beauty of the natural color, depth and threading of the eyes, which gives a museum quality look that is so desirable in your porcelain doll.
Glass is Classic
The subtle shades of our icy winter blues, the warm tones of out ethnic browns, the nuances of the grays, greens and violets, gives your doll "expression" and "character". Every time you look at your precious creation, the paperweight eyes will sparkle and ENHANCE the sheer beauty of your labor-of-love..........your doll.
You have laboriously made and hand painted the face, fashioned the dress of the finest materials and lace, purchased or made the appropriate wig and leather shoes and to finish her with eyes that are machine made acrylic, does not do justice to your craft.

    Dolls and Dollmaking Resources
Throughout history, dolls have been used as objects or symbols of religious worship, as burial objects, or as children's playthings. These objects have typically been constructed from clay minerals, wood, leather, bone, and ivory. While dolls were once used in religious worship and burial rituals, the 19th century saw the beginning of the industrial production of dolls. Doll's heads came to be made from pottery or porcelain, while the bodies were constructed of cloth or leather. Most recently, dolls have grown immensely popular, with "Barbie" surfacing in the 1960s, "Cabbage Patch Kids" coming into the mainstream in the mid-1980s, and dolls fashioned after television shows and movies being a hit in the 1990s. The links included herein relate specifically to dolls and dollmaking Resources.
