Dr. Lisa Newman, president of the International Natural Pet Care Association and author of eight books on natural pet care, says the daily consumption of raw meats and bones has resulted in these pets being diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, continuous digestive problems and immuno-related weaknesses with various symptoms. “In the 1980s, after six years of clinical documentation on the overall wellness of these animals, I documented a pattern of disease in the raw meat eaters,” says Dr. Newman, a Doctor of Naturopathy who also holds a Ph.D. in holistic nutrition. In the study, she compared a group of raw meat eaters with dogs eating cooked foods and another group on a daily diet of processed dog food and nutritional supplements. She noted that when the raw meat eater group was returned to a more conventional feeding program of cooked meats and processed foods, the overall health of the animals improved, and various digestive problems or other ailments were significantly diminished. “The raw meat diet is too hard to digest for most dogs,” says Dr. Newman. “Without easy-to-digest and easy-to-assimilate nutrients, the animal’s body lacks enough fuel to work its own miracles and fails to repair and support itself. Consequently, the body fails to thrive and prematurely ages while suffering from a number of complaints and ailments. Current faddists, just like the faddists of more than 15 years ago, somehow believe that processed food lacks naturally occurring enzymes that the raw diet contains. Yet, the same people urge the use of digestive enzyme supplements for raw meat diets."

CARING FOR ELDERLY PETS
Older pets have special health needs, and may require more attention and care than younger pets. The small amount of extra looking after that they need will be well rewarded, in continuing good health for them, and years of companionship for you. HOW OLD IS ELDERLY? This depends on the breed and on the individual pet - larger breeds tend to age more rapidly than smaller ones. In general, `elderly' means over eight years old for a medium sized dog, five years old for a larger dog and eight years old for a cat. WHY ELDERLY PETS HAVE SPECIAL HEALTH NEEDS As dogs and cats grow older, their organs may become less efficient and they may be less able to resist infections and other diseases. As a responsible pet owner you will want your pet to remain healthy and active for as long as possible, so you should be aware of any condition that might need your veterinary surgeon's attention. DIETARY NEEDS OF ELDERLY PETS There are several reasons why a special diet may be needed in an elderly pet. He or she may be less active than a younger animal, and therefore may need fewer calories. The digestive organs may become less efficient in digestion and absorption, and a highly digestible diet may need to be fed. Phosphorus and protein content may need to be decreased if your pet has kidney problems.

137. NATURAL DIETS FOR PETS
Holistic pet care What should I feed my cat and dog to keep them healthy? The best diets for both dogs and cats are natural ones, coming as close as possible
http://www.petsynergy.com/diet.html
PETSYNERGY Holistic Pet Care: What should I feed my cat and dog to keep them healthy? The best diets for both dogs and cats are natural ones, coming as close as possible to the diet they would eat in the wild. Cats are naturally carnivorous and have a high protein requirement, while dogs tend to be more scavenging and eat more of a variety of foods, requiring less protein than cats. It is possible, but not easy, to feed a dog a balanced vegetarian diet, though I do not really recommend it. It is, however, almost impossible to feed cats a purely vegetarian diet. If one looks at the teeth of cats and dogs, and counts the number of grinding teeth, and the number of tearing and shearing teeth a ratio can be worked out of the protein, carbohydrate and fat content that the diet should consist of, for both species. Pets today are fed highly processed and artificial foods, composed of unnatural ingredients, such as soymeal, artificial colorings and flavorings, as well as harmful preservatives such as BHA and ethoxyquin. The meat content is often composed of by-products, which can be anything from cancerous tissues, to diseased organs and can be anything that is considered not fit for human consumption. If we would not eat these things why should we expect our pets to do so? Even relatively good pet foods, which may not contain harmful additives, with the trend to preservatives such as vitamin E, are still nowhere as good as feeding your pet a natural, preferably organic, balanced diet, similar to what they would eat in the wild. Think of it this way - a fast food hamburger meal may be completely nutritionally balanced, but do you think you would be healthy if you ate it every day of your life?
