32.00 € (pb). ISBN 2-7132-1784-9. Review by Alice L. Conklin, University of Rochester, for H-France, April 2003. A recent edition of Le Monde des Livres (23 January 2003) contained a rare page devoted solely to new works on the French empire. The two books that the editor selected out were Marc Ferro’s Le livre noir du colonialisme a collection of articles detailing well-known colonial atrocitiesand yet another of Pascal Blanchard and Sandrine Lemaire’s popular volumes on the most spectacular and racist sides of colonial culture in France, Culture coloniale: La France conquise par son empire 1870-1931 (this coming fast upon last year’s Zoos humains ).[1] Both reviews were enthusiastic; they were also entirely uncritical. I would not want to read into this single set of reviews more than is warranted. But taken at face value, it would seem that a newspaper that regularly features serious historical scholarship might also call attention to, or at least show an awareness of, the more nuanced work that is beginning to emerge in France regarding its colonial past, particularly with regard to sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. It is very easy to condemn colonialism’s most visible excesses. It is considerably harder to lay bare the myriad more subtle ways in which colonialism worked its way into the life of the nation over the course of the last centuryways which linger (and malinger) still. Yet this is precisely the kind of history that a growing number of French scholars are now attempting to write.[2]

Security Council - 2001 Round-Up Adopts Comprehensive Anti-Terrorism Strategy; Sends West Africa, Great Lakes Missions; Monitors Kosovo, East Timor Progress In the shadow of the 11 September attacks on the United States, terrorism and the question of Afghanistan loomed over the Security Council's agenda in 2001. Throughout the year, however, the Council also focused on a global range of unstable situations, notably the long-term conflicts in Africa and the continuing violence in the Middle East. In addition, the significant progress in Kosovo and East Timor was closely monitored. The Council once again demonstrated its interest in holding open debates on issues that have an impact on global peace and security. This year, the discussions addressed: civilians in armed conflict; women, peace and security; small arms and light weapons; conflict prevention; and HIV/AIDS. On the day after the terrorist attacks, members broke tradition by standing in unison to adopt a resolution condemning them, expressing sympathy with families of the victims and the host country. Council members also expressed their readiness to combat all forms of terrorism in accordance with Charter responsibilities.

Me
In Cologne 2002
Click image to see a larger version Born in Feb 1965, I'm a true Aquarian. I was raised mostly in rural community in central Utah. It was a great place to grow up in many ways. The small town attitude of life still is stron in my being. It imparted a sense of interdependence on others as well as caring for people. When you live in an area where something you do makes an impression in many lives, you learn to think about your actions and their consequences. My Mother is from Rotterdam, Holland and the other side is a mixture of Danish and Irish heritage. With fair skin and auburn hair, I'm more adapted to the cooler climates of the north than the Mediterranean climate of the south (and San Diego, but I absolutely love it here). I've also inherited the Dutch height, at 6' 3". I have many varied interests. I'm truly a jack of many trades and master of none. My greatest interest is my love for travel. I love to travel and see other parts of the world and cultures. I was very fortunate to be able to that in my Navy career. I was exposed to areas of the Middle East (Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan), Africa (Seychelles, Kenya, Djbouti), Asia/Pacific Islands (Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Philippines) Australia, and Europe (France and Italy). It was amazing to see so many different places and cultures. I loved it. SInce then I've continued my travels, but focused on Europe. I love the European culture and continent and never tire of travelling there. I've been to Austria, Czeck Republic (only as Czeckoslovakia at the time), France, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and England. I am currently trying to bring my German and French back up to conversational level and want to learn Dutch (my native tongue). October 2002, I went to Netherlands, Brussels, and Koln (Cologne) and had a great time.

A Liberal Argument for Iraqi Regime Change from Salman Rushdie Such a pleasure to read a well-written op-ed piece for a change.
posted by tommyspoon at 4:40 AM PST [ trackback ] (47 comments total)
His position in a nutshell seems to be "Be sure you get rid of Saddam Hussein - or I'll have misgivings." It doesn't read as a liberal argument at all. In fact, it sounds like hawkish blackmail. Who can blame the man, with that fatwah hanging over his head? There was no love lost before it and there's certainly none left now. But...bah, humbug!
British or other European citizens writing op-eds in the WP or the NYT, telling the U.S. what to to do, always make me long to read an American Republicam writer (say, Tom Clancy) in Le Monde, El Pas or The Guardian telling Chirac, Aznar or Blair to lay off the social security and the taxes.
posted by MiguelCardoso at 5:44 AM PST on November 1
Admittedly Saddam is a terrible person and there is much suffering going on in Iraq. But the Rushdie arguement implies that we ought to change regimes in North Korea, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and wherever else leadership is not to our liking. Why select but one regime among so many that need a change from our point of view?

If Saddam can threaten us with his bad Whitney Houston impressions , we should answer the challenge. Just like in Apocalypse Now , we should send an air armada over Baghdad. But what to play?
