How to do long division math
With kids relying on calculators nowadays to do their math, many don't even know how to do long division math. Here are a couple of long division math problems that will show you how the answer is ultimately arrived at.
I was recently trying to figure out how many points per game a local basketball player was averaging. When I got out a pencil and paper and began to divide 359 (total points) by 17 (total games), a friend looking over my shoulder just shook his head and said, Dont you have a calculator? I did, but I decided to rebel against technology for the moment and do the long division math, something many kids today avoid as long as a calculator is around. Long division is actually very simple to do. It just takes a little bit of thinking and patience, two qualities that arent bad to exercise every now and then. Lets try 359 divided by 17. Another way to word it would be, How many times does 17 go into 359? bodyOffer(21155) Begin by taking the number 17 and each digit in 359 one at a time. Obviously, 17 does not go into 3 (the first digit of 359), so we now look at the first two digits together (which is 35). 17 will go into 35 two times (17 + 17 = 34) with a remainder of one. This tells us our answer will be twenty-something. That remainder of one is now put in front of the nine (third digit in 359). We know 17 will go into 19 one time with a remainder of two. So 359 divided by 17 is 21 with a remainder of two. This means the exact answer is 21 and 2/17. For simplicity, you can round down, which means the answer is 21. If the answer were 21 and 9/17, you could round up, making your answer 22.

It's the beginning of a new era and the end of an old one. Last night, Caldera, a leading Linux distributor, bought the Server (Unix) and Professional Services Division of Santa Cruz Operations (SCO), the long-standing leader of Intel Unix. With this single move, Linux and Unix are unified for the first time under one company. The enterprise operating system world will never be the same. As reported earlier by Smart Partner , the two companies have been close to a deal for weeks. In the end, Caldera gained not only the Unix-on-Intel Server Software Divisionwhich consists of UnixWare and OpenServer along with SCO's existing reseller partnerships and contracts in SCO's traditional global markets of small and midsize businesses, retail, telecommunications and governmentbut also the Professional Services division, as well. This Professional Services division provides consulting, support and installation/integration support to both direct customers and SCO's partners. This division, under Jim Wilt, current president of the SCO Professional Services division, will operate as a separate business unit of Caldera.

Welcome to UGA Sailing
We are excited you're interested in our organization, but our webpage is currently under construction. The website should be back up by mid June. In the meantime, here is a small bit of information about our club and the contact information of our officers. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we hope to hear from you soon.
Our club currently has two divisions: daysailing and collegiate racing. No experience is required for involvement - we welcome people of all skill levels, and we'll even teach you how to sail! Because the club's divisions organize and participate in many events throughout the semester, there are many opportunities for members to sail.
The daysailing division has 3 or 4 weekends per month during which members get together to sail. People who have passed a skill test can check out a boat at any time, scheduled by the club or not. In addition to days set aside for daysailing, the club hosts several teaching clinics a semester and there are numerous opportunities for club members to participate in local regattas.
The collegiate racing division of the club is a bit more structured, and it has a required time commitment. Our racing team is one of the newest additions to our district and we are making an active effort to expand and become a strong competition for the more elite teams. Starting in the fall, members of the racing team will be required to attend one practice per week and a certain percentage of our district's regatta series. We race all over the Southeast, and always have a blast with the other schools at regattas. We encourage anyone interested in racing to come give us a try. Anyone is welcome to participate in racing, regardless of skill level or experience.

Discovery School calls this interactive worksheet a "solver." Enter a long division problem (such as 2345 divided by 54) and you'll get two answers. The first is the decimal answer you'd get from a calculator (43.4259). The second is the quotient with

A New Look at Long Division
Does long division seem a little mysterious to you? I don't remember being told why it works. Is it a mystery? Or does it make sense? You and I know how to do this division problem. The first digit of the answer would seem to be 2. But, we are going to do it differently. We are going to make a guess at the entire answer. Let's make a guess of 218. We are not done yet, as 218 is probably the wrong answer. It was just a guess, after all. Since division is the inverse of multiplication, we need to multiply 218 x 29. Now, we need to divide 269 by 29. We will make a guess of 8. It looks like one more will work. So, we can add these three numbers, 218+8+1=227, which is our answer (with a remainder of 8). That is the same answer that we would get if we divide the normal way. But, did you see what we did? We just made guesses, multiplied, and subtracted, same as normal long division. Let's do the same division, almost normally. That is almost normal division. I have added a few zeros, in
