This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Diving Since divers and swimmers both end up in water, they're mistakenly linked in the minds of most viewers. However, diving actually has more in common with gymnastics than it does with swimming. Fancy diving is believed to have begun in the 1600s as part of the gymnastics movement that was popular throughout Germany and Sweden. Click a link to

More Sports Technique
Fancy dives are classified into four basic types: (1) the "layout," (2) the "pike," (3) the "tuck," and (4) the "free style." In the layout or "straight" dive, the body must not be bent in any fashion. In the pike, the body is bent at the hips and the knees are kept rigid. In the tuck, the body is compactly bunched with thighs drawn to the chest. The fourth dive, the "free style," may include twists or other intricate movements in the air. Competition
Both men and women compete separately in two events: the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform.

Venue: Sydney International Aquatic Centre, Sydney Olympic Park The outlook
The United States has dominated Olympic diving, winning 125 of the 225 medals, including 46 of 75 gold medals. Chinese divers won three of the four gold medals at Atlanta in 1996. The finer points
Format: Springboard competition is from the 3-meter board; platform from 10 meters. Seven judges score each dive from to 10 in full or half-point increments. Highest and lowest scores are dropped, and the remaining scores are added together and multiplied by the degree of difficulty (1.2 to 3.6). That total is multiplied by 6. Combined semifinal and final scores determine final results. Pool: Depth is at least 16 feet, 5 inches. A small hose sprays water onto the pool surface, creating a ripple effect, so the diver can see the surface. Without it, the water takes on a glass-like appearance, and all you can see is the bottom of the pool.

History of Diving The sport of diving began in Europe in the early 1800s when Swedish and German gymnasts took their acrobatics to the beach to practise their jumps and twists over water. Diving was originally considered a diversion from gymnastics, and was only seen as a sport in its own right in the late 19th century. Diving was one of the two introductory events at the 1904 Olympic Games in St Louis. Springboard diving joined the original platform event four years later. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain highdiving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally. American divers have dominated Olympic competitions up until the early 1990s. Since then, China has emerged as the powerhouse in international diving. Synchronised diving made its Olympic debut at the Sydney 2000 Games marking the beginning of a new chapter in diving. Diving is often classified as an art as well as a sport. Beauty and grace must be added to feats of strength and agility while the body is moving through the air. The diver must have total body control and good kinesthetic awareness.

- Lane 9 News - USOC and NCAA to Address Olympic Sports Decline at US Colleges May 12, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 11. AFTER years of ignoring the problem, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have finally decided to address the precipitous decline in Olympic sports, particularly Olympic sports, at the collegiate level. Today the two organizations announced the formation of the Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force to review the issue.
According to a press release issued today, the joint venture "seeks to explore ways to positively effect change by offering recommendations and solutions to curb the Olympic sports sponsorship regression."
The Olympic sports have also been impacted by the "arms race" in coaches' salaries on luxury seating in the sports of football and men's basketball. The press release went on to state: "In recent years, the elimination of sports programs by NCAA member institutions has disproportionately affected Olympic sports, prompting serious challenges for some National Governing Bodies dependent upon collegiate programs as a key source for future and current Olympic-caliber athletes. In addition, the sports decline has resulted in lost participation opportunities for NCAA student-athletes. Informal discussions on the future problems facing both organizations led to the creation of the task force, which is scheduled to operate for 18 months."

No Athens stint for
divers, swimmers

By Marc Anthony Reyes
Inquirer News Service
PHILIPPINE Sports Commission chair Eric Buhain on Monday lamented the plight of national swimmers and divers who have been trying their luck to qualify for the Athens Olympics in August.
Buhain, himself a former champion swimmer, said the swimmers and divers missed Olympic opportunities because of poor communication with the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA).
He said at least four swimmers are just a breath away from the Olympic B standards in their respective events.
Jenny Guerrero's 1 minute and 13 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke is just .01 slower than the Olympic standard. Rafael Chua, in the same event, has also posted a time of 1:05.2 as against the 1:05.0 Olympic cut.
Gem Ong (100m freestyle) and Benjie Uy (100m butterfly) are also close to making the required time, added Buhain, who dropped by the Rizal Aquatics Center Monday to talk to the swimmers and their parents. The PSC chief, however, was quick to say that the agency is not interfering in the PASA affairs.

U.S. swimmers rule, divers struggle in Sydney
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia For one week, the Americans ruled the Olympic pool. For the second week, the balance of power shifted. No one can touch the Chinese divers, who overwhelmed the United States and everyone else with power, elegance, consistency and depth. Barely making a splash which is good for this sport the Big Red Machine became the first country to win five diving medals at a single Olympics. Rubbing it in, the Chinese also captured five silvers. The U.S. team settled for one measly medal a surprise gold by Laura Wilkinson on the women's 10-meter platform. Excluding the 1980 boycott, the Americans carried home their lightest load since 1912. "Diving is so deep around the world now," U.S. coach Jay Lerew said. "Every year, it gets deeper and deeper." Ditto for swimming, but the Americans managed to maintain their dominance in the signature sport of the Sydney Games. The U.S. team will certainly will be remembered as one of the greatest in history, burying the challengers from Australia under a pile of gold, silver and bronze.
