Banners were prominently displayed for ChevronTexaco, event sponsor, at the FINA Grand Prix Diving Competition. (photo by Trisha Roché) HOUSTON, June 5, 2003 On her final effort, 2000 Olympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson completed a dive 2.5 backward somersaults and 1.5 twists in the pike position to win second place at the FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) Diving Grand Prix Meet in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Without ChevronTexaco's sponsorship of the competition, held at The Woodlands Athletic Center, it's likely that few diving fans would have been able to see Wilkinson's dive, the highest scored in the 10-meter platform finals. Nor would they have seen the winner of the event, Olympic hopeful Loudy Tourky from Australia. "In one word, ChevronTexaco's sponsorship meant everything," said Roger Bourland, the meet's director. "Without the generous support of ChevronTexaco, we wouldn't even have been able to erect bleachers for fans to view the competition." Ray Wilcox, vice president of ChevronTexaco and president of North America Upstream, welcomed the competition's 125 world-class divers from 23 countries during the meet's opening ceremonies. In addition, Jim Blackwell, director of the Southern Africa business unit, along with Melody Meyer, vice president of North America Upstream's Mid-Continent business unit; Greg Vesey, president of ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures; and Hugh Connett, president of Bridgeline Holdings, a ChevronTexaco joint venture natural gas pipeline and marketing company; presented awards and straw cowboy hats to the winners.

History
Springboard diving was added in 1908 and platform diving in 1912, when the combined event was dropped. Women's platform diving was also added in 1912, followed by women's springboard diving in 1920. From 1912 through 1928, divers were ranked by ordinals; that is, the places assigned them by the judges. Thus, if there were three judges and a diver was ranked first by two and second by one, that diver's score would be 4 (1+1+2). A diver with a lower point score but higher ordinals could therefore win the gold medal. Since 1932, divers have been ranked by the total number of points for all their dives. The score for a dive is the score awarded by the judges, on a scale from to 6, multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty. The degree of difficulty ranges from a low of 1.2 to a high of 3.6. The newest discipline, synchronized diving, became an Olympic event in 2000.

    Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
    By Jonathon Kahn
    Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
    The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article document.write('');

      USOC boss takes on handball, Olympic worries
      By DAVID BARRON
      Despite concerns about security, doping and venues, the road to Athens isn't all work for Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Scherr, in fact, will take some time off from more pressing concerns to compete next weekend at the USA Team Handball national championships at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The handball event is one of two major events involving Olympic sports in the city this week, along with the FINA Grand Prix diving championships at The Woodlands Athletic Center on Thursday through Sunday. It also will mark Scherr's second trip to Texas in three weeks. He was in San Antonio in mid-April for the Pan American Sports Organizations congress, which took place in the United States for only the second time as part of the USOC's effort to improve relationships within the Americas. He'll likely return a third time in December, when the USOC will host a training seminar in Houston for Olympic committee executives from the Americas.

    Notebook: Olympic sports decline on campus By Seattle Times news services

    Myles Brand E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Most e-mailed articles The Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force includes 16 people with knowledge in collegiate and Olympic sports and will work for 18 months. While no dates have been set, the group is expected to meet at least four times. "This task force is an important step in stemming the decline of Olympic sports programs on NCAA campuses," NCAA president Myles Brand said. "Obviously, colleges and universities are faced with significant economic issues with regard to athletics programs. But the benefits these student-athletes bring to campuses and the benefits many ultimately share with the nation on the Olympic stage should not be minimized when institutions make budgetary decisions." Olympic sports are often the first to go when NCAA schools face budget constraints. Wrestling, men's gymnastics and swimming-and-diving programs have been hit particularly hard. In men's gymnastics, for example, there were 202 teams in all NCAA divisions in 1972. Now there are about 20. That limits opportunities for student-athletes, the NCAA said. It also hurts the USOC, which has relied on NCAA programs as a source of current and future Olympic-caliber athletes as well as coaches. From 1980 to 2000, about 94 percent of U.S. Olympians were attending or had attended NCAA schools.

    Wrestling mom: How does that grab you? 09:21 PM CDT on Saturday, May 8, 2004 By CATHY HARASTA / The Dallas Morning News Moms everywhere have said it time and again: "Quit wrestling in the house!" But Kristie Marano will not spend Mother's Day telling her daughter, Kayla, 6, to take the sport outside. Marano, America's top woman wrestler and a reigning world champion, will spend the morning working out at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. "After the workout, Kayla and I will have the afternoon together," said Marano, the top seed in her weight class for the U.S. Olympic Wresting Trials May 21-23 in Indianapolis. "Kayla's funny. One day, she'll say she wants to wrestle. The next day, she doesn't." Women's wrestling will make its Olympic debut at this August's Athens Games. Marano, 25, wants to add an Olympic medal to her seven world medals.
