Blythe Hartley wins silver at Canada Cup diving meet
WebPosted Sun, 02 May 2004 21:09:52 EDT CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Blythe Hartley earned Canada's third silver medal this weekend at the 12-country Canada Cup diving competition on Sunday, placing second on the women's three-metre springboard. The meet was the sixth of nine stops on the FINA Grand Prix circuit. Olympic silver medallist Jingjing Guo of China won the gold medal with 381.75 points. Hartley, based in Montreal, followed at 362.40 and Vera Ilyna of Russia was third at 354.33. World champion Julia Pakhalina of Russia was fifth. "I didn't have very high expectations for this meet so I'm very pleased with the final result," said Hartley, 21, fifth at the World Cup final earlier this year. "The focus right now is more on the training. So I'm going to look back at this competition as a real confidence builder. Overall I'm having a very good season and it continued today."

28. 2000 Olympics--Diving And Synchronized Diving From WWA
for aquatic sports, announced on Monday, March 22, that men s and women s synchronizeddiving will be added as a medal sport to the 2000 olympic Games in Sydney
http://www.worldwideaquatics.com/olympics/aboutdiving.htm
Read about Synchronized Diving HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF DIVING
By Dr. Ron O'Brien, U.S. Diving National Technical Director The origin of fancy diving goes as far back as the 17th century in connection with the great gymnastic movement in Germany and Sweden. In the summertime, gymnasts moved their equipment to the beaches, and acrobatics over the water became a part of their activities. Diving, then, is more related to gymnastics than to swimming. However, since swimming and diving both use a water medium, they have naturally become linked. Platform diving (33 feet high) achieved international notice in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis when it was included as an event on the men's swimming program. Springboard diving was added for the 1908 Games in London. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain high diving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally. As could be expected, Germany and Sweden dominated the early competition. It wasn't until 1920 that the United States reached worldwide prominence in diving by winning three of the gold medals in the Olympics (men's and women's springboard and men's platform events). From that time through 1992, the United States has been the world leader in diving. The total count is 46 of 75 Olympic gold medals for the United States.

 CRAZY : INDOOR FREE FALL
In the early 19th century Swedish and German gymnasts started to practise their somersaults above the water in order to have a smoother landing. This new sport was soon called ‘Fancy Diving’, a name which would remain until the 20th century. In 1904 diving was an Olympic discipline for the first time, but the aim was only a plunge for distance. The diving as it is practised today was part of the 1908 games for the men and 4 years later for the women. In the Twenties, the American had taken the lead from the Germans and the Swedes, and this did not change until the Eighties. In 1952 and 1956 Pat McCormick won gold medals in the female competition; her fellow countryman Greg Louganis had the same success in 1984 and 1988.

Diving calls for both physical and technical ability. Divers perform a figure, or a series of figures, each of which has an assigned degree of difficulty. The athletes dive into the swimming pool trying to disturb the water as little as possible when they break the surface (rip entry). The routine and the order in which the divers perform their dives are recorded on a diving list. Diving Olympic diving consist of the following events: Athletes dive from a platform called “highboard” or springboard. They try to perform their figures in the best way possible before reaching the surface of the water. The judging panel consists of seven judges. They give their score based on the degree of difficulty and ease displayed by the athletes while performing their programme.

Sports Complex, Bay Area Reporter Of a billion people, a million may be good athletes. Of those, a few hundred thousand are great swimmers. Of those, a few thousand each year are Olympians. Of those thousands, a few dozen are divers. Of those, this autumn, at the Olympics in Sydney, of all athletes, only one, so far, is openly gay. That one is David Pichler. Ranked fourth in the world, the Ohio State graduate (and Diver of the Year in ‘91 and ‘92) - noted for his tumultuous coming out in 1997 that stemmed from an unruly incident on a plane between his former lover and former coach, Ron O'Brien - Pichler came out to some acclaim in the pages of “The Advocate.” The gossip: Pichler accused Tim O'Brien, son of his former coach, of assaulting his companion, Steve Guiffre, on an airplane after the U.S. national championships in April of that year. Tim O'Brien and Guiffre exchanged words as the plane sat on the tarmac at the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport on April 22. O’Brien later retired from coaching. Putting the events behind him, Pichler prefers to focus on the future, and Sydney, as will many gay Americans when they watch the Olympics in September.
