Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

The Olympic Movement Olympic Issues In the Ancient Olympic Games, women were forbidden to take part. Married women were forbidden to even enter the competition areas as spectators. If they were caught, the punishment was death. Therefore, they created their own Games dedicated to the goddess Hera. Hera was the sister-wife of Zeus. The Olympic Games were dedicated to Zeus. When the Olympic Games were revived in 1896 even the founder himself, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, did not agree with women's participation in the Games. This issue was the topic of much debate between the initial members of the IOC. However, women did not take part in the Games until 1900 in Paris. It was here that Britain's Charlotte Cooper became the first female gold medallist in the tennis singles competition. Only one other sport saw women's participation in 1900, golf. In London at the 1908 Games there were 36 women competitors in the figure skating and tennis events. After these Games and a recommendation from the British Olympic Association that women swimmers, divers and gymnasts be allowed to compete in future Games, the Swedish Organising Committee included two swimming events and one diving contest for women at the 1912 Stockholm Games. Finally, in 1924 the IOC decided to allow a larger participation of women in the Games. However, there was little evidence of this even by the 1936 Games in Berlin where there were only four sports available to women.

How to Watch Olympic Diving
Kristin Link, six-time USA Synchronized Platform Diving Champion, says that watching divers in competition need not be complicated. Just enjoy the ballet and the athleticism. Steps: Find an event in your area or on television. Visit www.usadiving.org to get a complete schedule. The 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials are in Seattle June 25-28; the Olympics are in Sydney in September 2000. Be aware of which events you are going to see. Olympic competition has men's and women's events in springboard and platform diving. The springboard catapults the divers high into the sky where they perform dives of various degrees of difficulty. The 10-meter platform rises three stories into the air and the divers launch themselves out and off of it. The Sydney Games will host the first synchronized platform diving in Olympic history. Have an understanding of the judging. In international diving, the judging consists of a panel of seven experts who score each dive considering four phases of the performance: the approach, takeoff, technique and grace during flight, and the water entry. In competition the divers perform compulsory and optional dives and each dive is scored on a 10-point basis. The highest and the lowest of the judges' scores are tossed out and the remaining five scores are totaled. These scores are then multiplied by 3, divided by 5, and multiplied again by the degree of difficulty of the dive. Whew! Listen for the announcers' explanations and watch the scoreboard.

PAT MCCORMICK In 1948, Pat McCormick missed earning her place on the United States Olympic Diving Team by less than 1/100th of a point. Faced with such adversity, many seventeen-year-old's might say they gave it their best shot and move on. Perhaps at best, we could expect someone to aspire to make the team the next time around. Not willing to settle for either, McCormick dared to challenge herself to win the gold. But, not just one gold medal. In 1952 and in 1956, Pat McCormick created the biggest splash in the history of diving by winning two gold medals in two consecutive Olympic Games-the first and only woman in the history of the sport to achieve what is called a "double-double". By 1984 there was a new Pat McCormick on the Olympic diving scene. Her daughter Kelly earned a silver medal for the American Team, followed by a bronze in 1988. The McCormicks are the only mother-daughter medal winning combination in the history of the Olympics. Pat McCormick's perspective of the Olympics spans many years and encompasses the roles of athlete, competitor, mother, television and radio commentator, communicator and promotional speaker. She was the official representative to two US Presidents, and one of nine athletes to carry the Olympic flag in the Opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics, representing her country and her fellow Olympians.

History of Diving
Introduction
Gold medallist, Dorothy Poynton of the USA, performing a swan dive in the 1932 Olympics The history of competitive diving spans roughly 100 years. During this period the nature of diving has changed dramatically. Junior divers now routinely perform dives once banned at the Olympic Games. A report following the IV Olympiad suggested elimination of the double somersault, because it was believed that a diver could not control the execution without risk of injury! At the World Masters Championships , women in the 50-59 age group springboard competition are currently required to do 8 dives - the same number as the women athletes in the Olympics of 1948.
Diving originated from people amusing themselves by jumping and diving from natural features (rocks and cliffs) or from structures built for other purposes (piers and bridges); early swimming and diving clubs were based on ponds. In particular, travellers reported amazing feats performed by natives diving from the cliffs in Acapulco, Mexico and in Hawaii. Origins of competitive diving In the early nineteenth century, the only 'dive' was a simple plunge, similar to that used by swimmers. The diver springs from the bathside and aims to travel as far as possible under water. In Britain National Plunging Championships were held from 1883 to 1937 - but continue to this day in Yorkshire.

History of Diving The sport of diving began in Europe in the early 1800s when Swedish and German gymnasts took their acrobatics to the beach to practise their jumps and twists over water. Diving was originally considered a diversion from gymnastics, and was only seen as a sport in its own right in the late 19th century. Diving was one of the two introductory events at the 1904 Olympic Games in St Louis. Springboard diving joined the original platform event four years later. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain highdiving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally. American divers have dominated Olympic competitions up until the early 1990s. Since then, China has emerged as the powerhouse in international diving. Synchronised diving made its Olympic debut at the Sydney 2000 Games marking the beginning of a new chapter in diving. Diving is often classified as an art as well as a sport. Beauty and grace must be added to feats of strength and agility while the body is moving through the air. The diver must have total body control and good kinesthetic awareness.

I was very, very hot in Rome, and there were a lot of very good divers for the first time. The situation was a little tense. Divers were watched constantly and conversations were monitored (because of the cold war)

History
Fort Lauderdale's swimming heritage dates back to the Civitan raft off Las Olas Boulevard and the monumental Casino Pool, which followed in 1928. As the first pool of Olympic size (50m x 20m) in Florida, it remained at the forefront of the swimming scene for nearly half a century and consequently witnessed a great deal of American swimming history. Located directly on the beach at what is now known as D.C. Alexander Park, just south of Las Olas Boulevard, this beautiful Spanish-style facility was engineered by Clifford Root and filled twice a week with salt water directly from the Atlantic Ocean.. The Casino Pool (1928-1966) was home to the nation's top swimmers for decades, namely, Katherine Rawls , Fort Lauderdale's first celebrity of sport and international athletic ambassador. The pool cost $150,000, and measured 50.38 meters by 18.3 meters, or 20 yards by 55 yards.
