    Religion and Art
Art, Religion, and Popular Culture . The goals of the three modules are (1) to read visual and literary texts from other cultures looking for what these artifacts tell them (and us) about religion—how others understand the nature, meaning, and goal of human existence; and (2) to help students “see” (also read, hear) religion all around them in new and unexpected ways. The modules emphasize class discussion, journaling, and short writing responses. One module highlights Asian religions. (For context and commentary regarding how this unit was developed, see the Religion and the Arts page).
    Religion and Government
These two lesson plans on religious liberty clauses in the U.S. Constitution are provided by The First Amendment Center Understanding the Establishment Clause
This plan provides the historical background of the religious liberty clauses of the First Amendment, and then focuses on the establishment clause. After examining the tests used by the Supreme Court in establishment clause cases, students are asked to judge whether there has been a violation of the establishment clause in five situations. Understanding the Free-Exercise Clause
This plan provides five cases in which an individual's freedom of conscience comes into conflict with the interests of the larger society. Students hear the arguments put forth by plaintiffs and defendants in each case, and then deliberate on what limits, if any, may be placed on religious expression.

The lesson plans presented here provide an overview of many of the problems and issues that archaeologists must confront. The lesson plans have been designed as a collective unit. We encourage young students to begin their experiences in archaeology by intially conducting background research on the site where they anticipate working, by reviewing contemporary issues relevant to the country where they plan to work, by understanding the basic investigative issues and problem solving strategies that confront archaeologists, and finally to promote original and intuitive thought in relation to historical and archaeological research. It is with this in mind that we present these lesson plans. A summary of the lesson plans is given below. Please note that the lesson plans are intended to accompany the learning modules. Summation of the Lesson Plans
    • Lesson 1 is designed to permit students to conduct historical research on a particular ancient city other than Caesarea Maritima. Module 1 is designed to provide a template for the production of an historical outline on an ancient community. Students should be prepared to identify and document the most important historical trends evidenced at a particular ancient site. Lesson serves to supplement Lesson 1. Students should identify current issues relevant to the country that the city selected for analysis in Lesson 1 is set. One primary aim is for the student to understand cultural diversity.
