Charter Schools in District of Columbia
Law: Passed in 1996 Rank : 3rd strongest of the nation's 40 charter laws CER Grade : A Schools Students
DEVELOPMENTS:
  • GET THE FACTS: Charters have not yet been formally evaluated as to their progress in advancing the education of the least educated District children, who come from the regular public schools.... In the meantime, parents - the child's first teacher-have spoken loudly, enrolling more than 15% of their children in charters. That voting with their feet ought to count for something.

SCORE: Washington, DC boasts one of the strongest charter laws in the nation. With 39 charter schools, and 15% of the student population in charter schools, its success and health underscore the benefits of strong laws. The District, like many states, has its share of challenges with the usual bureaucratic tinkering, but DC’s crop has an open hearing from the District’s two chartering authorities, has permitted parents and companies to run schools, is given a substantial amount of funding and is autonomous from government entities. http://www.marcopolo-education.org/MarcoGrams/12-20-02.html
Understanding Patterns
Patterns are created when items are organized in a coherent fashion. Patterns are found not only in art, poetry and clothing, but also in the way people play the stock market, travel to work or get ready for school. This month, the MarcoGram features lessons that explore the development of patterns, whether it's combining sounds to create pleasing music, or providing scientists with an explanation of the past to prepare for the future. Use the warm-up activities below to encourage your students to locate and identify patterns, then scroll down for links to more lessons and resources to use in your classroom. The MarcoGram is created in HTML. If you are unable to properly view the images or hyperlinks, please view the online version at http://www.marcopolo-education.org/marcograms/12-20-02.html
Warm-up Activities
1. Mathematics has been called the science of patterns. In a pattern, a core unit is repeated in predictable ways. Mathematicians use their knowledge of patterns to understand place value, multiplication, functions and many other topics. Patterns are easily identified by finding similar items that repeat. Are there any patterns on your clothing, such as stripes, plaids or flowers? Can you identify any patterns in the classroom?
