Let Distance Education Bring CTY to You
CTY's unique distance education program provides challenging academic courses all year long for eligible students in grades K through 12. Like CTY's summer programs, the distance courses are varied, demanding and very appropriate for our highly able students. Unlike the summer programs, however, students can take courses all year long, and make significant progress in a subject by working from their homes or schools.
How Do Distance Courses Work?
When an eligible student enrolls in a CTY distance course, the course materials are mailed to the student's home. A highly qualified CTY tutor introduces the student to the course, and provides instructions, encouragement and guidance. Course materials vary, depending on subject and level. Many include a CD-ROM or online materials and require access to a computer with Internet connection. Most students interact extensively with the tutor using e-mail, telephone, progress reports, or by means of an interactive Internet-based whiteboard. Some courses also include interaction with other students using a Web-based discussion system. This Web site and the CTY Distance Education catalog provide more details about the tutors, the courses available, the course materials, and the technical requirements for each course. Although most of our students have never taken a distance course before they enroll with CTY, they learn quickly that the courses are demanding but fun and very engaging. Working with their tutor, they dive into challenging course material and advance their knowledge and understanding of the subject. Students in math can accelerate through the math sequence and also take courses for enrichment, to deepen their understanding of particular subjects and learn how to apply what they have learned. Writing students learn that writing is both a craft and an art, and tutors help them develop the skills to use written language in articulate and elegant ways.

Research Center Update: Focus on Distance Education
As a follow-up to the NEA survey on Distance Education, this report delves deeper into faculty concerns about human contact, training and support, compensation and property rights, enrollment limits, and quality.
Distance Learning Faculty Poll
Confronting the future of distance learning, one in 10 of NEA higher education faculty members have taught a distance learning course in the last five years. The vast majority of faculty have very positive feelings about distance learning. This survey taps into the perceptions of over 400 members who teach distance learning courses, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of distance teaching and learning.

Barriers to distance education: Perceptions of K-12 educators . Proceedings of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education International Conference. Albuquerque, New Mexico USA, March 24-29. Issue 1, pp. 256-259.
Instructional-use computers are continuing to migrate into the classrooms, with public schools reporting over half the installed base now located in classrooms. Still, education struggles with the rapid expansion of technology. This article reports on findings from a survey (n=2504) of respondents working in elementary, middle, and secondary schools (n=159). The survey concerns barriers perceived in distance education and is based on prior research involving content analyses of the case studies along with an extensive review of the literature. Demographic data about the respondents is reported for job functions, delivery systems, individual expertise in distance education, and organizational capabilities regarding distance education. Perceptions of these respondents concerning barriers to distance education reported, along with comparisons to respondents not working in K-12.

Quality in Distance Education by Meyer, Katrina A What impact does distance education have on student learning? Is it more effective than traditional education? Less effective? Or about the same? Many studies that compare the two find no significant differences in learning and other outcome measures. The perception is that most studies on distance education or the use of technology are poorly designed and prone to incomplete analyses. That certainly is true of the simple comparison study, where student outcomes (such as course grades) for an online course are compared to those of a traditional course. This is the source of the "no significant differences" phenomenon, where possible intervening forces are ignored. Often, the researcher and instructor are the same person, further muddying the results. This design is flawed and the results are questionable. However, there are some very good studies, some quantitative, others qualitative, and still others thoughtful or theoretical analyses of what is occurring in online courses. Some of these studies are quite creative and use interesting approaches to analyze the online course or the student learning resulting from using the Web in a course. Many of these studies would pass the harshest peer review criteria. Others are less complicated but no less worth reading. It is unlikely we will ever unravel all of the factors that impact online learning. It is complex and its elements (the technology and the students) keep changing. Since we have not achieved a definitive answer on quality for more traditional classroom situations, perhaps it is unwise to expect such clarity for online learning. However, more understanding is always better, so the search for clarity will continue.
