Students shunning animal dissection ritual
Story Tools (AP) Increasing numbers of students are asking to opt out of the science class ritual of dissecting frogs or fetal pigs, branding the practice cruel and insisting they can learn as much from computer simulations. A 16-year-old honor student in Baltimore was removed from her anatomy class last week after refusing to dissect a cat, then allowed back in with the option of computer alternatives after protesters picketed the high school. In Las Vegas, the Clark County School Board voted earlier this year to let students opt out of dissections if they have parental support. "They won't learn much with their eyes closed because they're disgusted." Amy Richards, student opposing dissection The new policy was adopted after a petition drive led by eighth-grader Laurie Wolff, an A student who received a C in a science class two years earlier after declining to cut up an earthworm. Anti-dissection students also appealed for policy changes this year at a school board meeting in Little Chute, Wisconsin, and last year before a state Senate committee in Vermont.

Hot Pocket Dissection
Have you ever wondered what makes a Hot Pocket tick? Of course you have, but these kind of secrets are well-guarded, so your exploratory efforts may have been in vain. On October 22, we opened one up under the bright lights at Cockeyed Labs. Brooke and I began the procedure by slicing open the Hot Pocket packaging. The Hot Pockets can remain in stasis within these protective boxes for several years. This one had the markings for Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza. We got lucky with this box, and found a healthy set of twins inside! Next, we removed the plastic wrapping. Finally we had the subject isolated and on the dissection board. We were three hours into the operation. Brooke marked it with the "Double-Y" and we cut through the first layer of skin. We carefully peeled back the skin. Nothing could have prepared us for what we found inside. Immediately we could see a tomato-based sauce and tiny white bulbs of solid matter. We quickly identified some pepperoni and onion particles. Brooke pinned back the skin and we scanned for internal structures. There was a lot of sauce over

American Conservative Union 40th Anniversary: Party Report
Hey, who wouldn't want to go to the black-tie gala of the nation's oldest modern conservative organization? It's like a Young Americans for Freedom reunion! They killed HillaryCare! Bob Novak will be there! And did we mention the President is speaking? Serious stroking of base action. How could we say no? Late, tripping over dress, still can't quite get used to showing up somewhere in evening wear while it's still daylight. Arrive at JW Marriott just as a dozen black SUVs whip past, sirens blaring. Atrium with dramatic escalators solves minor personal mystery: Where did they film the White House Correspondents' Dinner scenes in "Broadcast News"? (Because it certainly wasn't at the Hinckley Hilton, where the dinner actually is.) Even the metal detectors are in the same place. Acquire fellow undercover operative [FUO] and attempt to recover Will Call tix. Confusion. Name not on list. Angry old white men growing restless. Am swooped up by ACU contact and whisked by security. (Feeling very important.) Head to special "VIP Reception." Average age at VIP Reception is about 50. Conservative women, paradoxically, do not seem to be hampered by the Little Black Dress orthodoxy. Jewel tones dominate. Am nearly run over by

"Much of it may be bogus, error-ridden, or just plain wrong." When Time magazine's Philip Elmer-DeWitt wrote those words more than a year ago, he was describing news on the Net. In retrospect, it seems he's found the perfect sentence to describe the news in Time magazine. "Bogus," "error-ridden," and "just plain wrong" are only a few of the terms being used by journalists and Net experts to describe both the "Cyberporn" cover story in the 3 July issue of Time and the study it used as a story hook. In this special section, HotWired destroys both story and study.

Mike Chaney's Optispark Disection Page The photos on this page are of a 95 Optispark. The unit is held together with inverse (male) Torx screws. The easiest way to remove them is to get an old Torx screw out of something and hold the screw with vice grips. You can then fit the screw over the head and turn it. All screws have been removed in these photos to make access easier. This page is for your information only. What you do with the information here is up to you. I figured a lot of people would benefit from seeing one of these things opened up. Above is the Optispark with the outide facing the camera (the side you see from the front of the engine). When we flip the Optispark over, we can see the center shaft with the three large recessed (circular) grooves that fit over three bolts when installed. The small indexed groove fits over a single pin (it will only go on one way). When the four inverse (male) Torx screws are removed, the outer half of the Optispark reveals all eight contacts and the rotor contact in the center. The other half (inner part facing the engine) reveals the rotor (attached with two very small Torx screws). The rotor spins freely.

Moore in a duck suit?
Let me tell you about an experience I had with one of my all-time favorite movies: "Fargo." When it came out, I went nuts for it. I thought Chief of Police Marge Gunderson was right up there with Columbo, Nick Charles, and Batman: a skilled detective with a unique approach to crimesolving that could easily spawn a dozen stories. I loved the cinematography and the way it made Minnesota and North Dakota look like the most exotic and interesting places on earth. I loved the accents, I loved the utter incompetence of Jerry Lundegaard's criminal scheme, and after I saw it the third time I had an urge for buffet-style dining that required me to drive nearly an hour away to Rhode Island and the only such restaurant that I could find. Then I learned that the movie's opening title card, which claims that "Fargo" was based on a true story, was a lie. Did it ruin "Fargo" for me? Well, no. It was still everything it always was. But man alive; the Coen Brothers had
