She was reporting trouble with her ancient Graphite base station... it turned out to be a telephone jack that had been pulled right off the circuit board (Ooops!). So what is a brother to do but to buy her a new "Extreme" Base Station (AEBS) for her birthday (she'd been pretty good!) Anyway, the Airport model we settled on was the AEBS with the modem since my sister needs a dial-up connection. That was fine with me since there are a couple of extra bits I wanted to photograph anyway. For an introduction to the Airport Extreme Base Station, see the preceeding page that shows the initial stages of dismantling the AEBS. But remember, opening an base station automatically voids your warranty. This information is for entertainement purposes only and anything you undertake is at your risk alone. As you will see below, taking apart the AEBS is a bit of a challenge, so have a Torx T-8 driver and a small Philips screwdriver handy if you want to follow along. A geometric dissection is a cutting of one or more figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures. With an emphasis on using as few pieces as possible, these geometrical puzzles have prompted ingenious approaches, leading to many beautiful and elegant constructions. An example is the remarkable 5-piece dissection of a regular octagon to a square. I have included not only earlier dissections but also much new unpublished material by myself and others. The discussion highlights the techniques and their underlying mathematical properties, and is accompanied by hundreds of diagrams. Special attention is paid to historical origins, transporting the reader to the palace school of the tenth-century Baghdad caliphate, to the mathematical puzzle columns in turn-of-the-century newspapers, and to the 1900 Paris Congress of Mathematicians. Short biographies flesh out the lives of the people - famous, not-so-famous, and obscure - who have worked on these problems. Since no green direct injection laser diodes are currently available, these pointers are based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm. If you are working in a classroom situation, you may also have a variety of types of birds available; this will provide a much better idea of the variations in bird anatomy. If not, a single individual will suffice for the exercise. By dissecting a bird, which means "take it apart," you will be able to look at any part of it you wish. The major goal of this exercise is for you to learn something, so if you are being supervised, ask questions any time your curiosity is piqued or you're not sure what you're looking at (or for). By handling it and using your imagination, understand the difference in proportions of the bird with and without its feathers. A bird without feathers is shaped something like a turtle, with compact trunk, long neck, and short tail ( uropygium ). The neck is highly flexible because of the number of vertebrae and type of vertebral connections, and the bird can easily reach every part of its body with its bill, which is the equivalent of the grasping organ formed by our own opposable thumb and fingers. The bird with all its feathers presents a rather different appearance, as the wings and tail are then prominent features and the neck is much less obvious in many species. But over the past decade, interactive software and online simulations have made it possible to study the inner workings of animals without cutting them up. Can virtual dissection replace the real thing? In 1987, a California high school student named Jenifer Graham risked having her grade lowered when she refused to dissect a frog in science lab. Her protest led to a new law in California, a documentary film about her case, and a changing attitude toward animal dissection in schools around the country. The California law lets students refuse to perform such dissections. According to the advocacy group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), six other states have followed suit, including Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. Massachusetts and Illinois are considering similar legislation. PETA estimates that almost 6 million frogs a year are bred and killed for dissection. Many science courses use dissection to give students a better understanding of frog anatomy and a specific look at internal organs and muscles.
