Many educators strongly feel that there is no substitute for the hands-on, learning experience of dissection. Susan Offner, a former Outstanding Biology Teacher Award recipient, writes, "The learning that occurs in a dissection is qualitatively different from the learning that occurs in a lecture or paper-and-pencil setting. No model, no video, no diagram and no movie can duplicate the fascination, the sense of discovery, wonder and even awe that students feel when they find real structures in their own specimens" (147). The National Association of Biology Teachers states, "The NABT acknowledges that no alternative can substitute for the actual experience of dissection or other use of animals and urges teachers to be aware of the limitations of alternatives."

Dissection
Merging the 1970s style of melodic rock that Iron Maiden popularized and developed with a newer, darker and more simplistic style of metal derived from the extremes of black and death metal. Although distinctive in aesthetic it is structured like death metal and provides a good classic metal listening experience. The Somberlain
No Fashion
Production: Clear, slightly muddied but irrelevant as it brings twists to melodic timbre. Review: A death metal band playing heavy metal in the hazy aura of black metal technique, creates an interesting and very listenable allow that despite lacking the flow and inscrutability of hardcore black metal creates an atmosphere specific to the genre. An influence from Necrophobic, perhaps in the sweeping riffs which move from broad intervals through a melodic bridge to binary variation, and songs which move from there into permutations of central riffs while keeping an ear for melody and the harmonic sublime. Similar to bands such as At the Gates or Sentenced Dissection integrate heavy metal melodic playing with smooth and lengthy black metal riffs, allowing harmonic space to be saturated by osmosis in preparation for thematic narrative and conclusion. Sonorous and often gentle, this album embraces a different aesthetic from black metal in its wavelike complement and recursion, with an emphasis on motion and structure in a style consistent from speed metal through the renaissance of death metal. Airport Extreme Dissected! (1/3)
I recently visited my brother and sister. She was reporting trouble with her ancient Graphite base station... it turned out to be a telephone jack that had been pulled right off the circuit board (Ooops!). So what is a brother to do but to buy her a new "Extreme" Base Station (AEBS) for her birthday (she'd been pretty good!) Anyway, the Airport model we settled on was the AEBS with the modem since my sister needs a dial-up connection. That was fine with me since there are a couple of extra bits I wanted to photograph anyway. For an introduction to the Airport Extreme Base Station, see the preceeding page that shows the initial stages of dismantling the AEBS.
But remember, opening an base station automatically voids your warranty. This information is for entertainement purposes only and anything you undertake is at your risk alone.
As you will see below, taking apart the AEBS is a bit of a challenge, so have a Torx T-8 driver and a small Philips screwdriver handy if you want to follow along. You may or may not notice that I obscured the serial numbers, etc. for the sake of privacy. Any picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Before I started, a picture of the box. So far, we still have a warranty!

Animal dissection in schools and medical training is being replaced bynew and more human teaching methods. Learn how you can introduce
http://www.dissectionalternatives.org/
A great deal has changed since the 1920s, when dissection became commonplace. Today, many people are concerned about the complex ecosystems that are destroyed when millions of animals are removed from their habitats for this purpose. When taken from breeding facilities, animals invariably suffer as they are raised, prepared, and killed for dissection.
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, this picture is changing rapidly. New teaching methods have arrived, and students are reaping the benefits. Digital Frog NeoTek , and DryLab Students and teachers are choosing better and more humane teaching methods, paving the way for more efficient and effective learning. by Greg Frederickson , published by Cambridge University Press
Hardcover: November 1997, ISBN 0-521-57197-9. Paperback: February 2003, ISBN 0-521-52582-9. My book explores an area of mathematical recreations, called geometric dissections. A geometric dissection is a cutting of one or more figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures. With an emphasis on using as few pieces as possible, these geometrical puzzles have prompted ingenious approaches, leading to many beautiful and elegant constructions. An example is the remarkable 5-piece dissection of a regular octagon to a square. I have included not only earlier dissections but also much new unpublished material by myself and others. The discussion highlights the techniques and their underlying mathematical properties, and is accompanied by hundreds of diagrams. Special attention is paid to historical origins, transporting the reader to the palace school of the tenth-century Baghdad caliphate, to the mathematical puzzle columns in turn-of-the-century newspapers, and to the 1900 Paris Congress of Mathematicians. Short biographies flesh out the lives of the people - famous, not-so-famous, and obscure - who have worked on these problems. Marvelous illustrations are reproduced from the book Cyclopedia of Puzzles by Sam Loyd.

    Dissection of Green Laser Pointer
Here is the complete sequence of photos of the dissection of a 532 nm green laser pointer. Since no green direct injection laser diodes are currently available, these pointers are based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm. See the Diode Lasers chapter of Sam's Laser FAQ for more information on DPSSFD laers. If all you are interested in is what's inside a much simpler red laser pointer, go to the Assorted Diode Lasers Gallery wing and check out the photos there. I hope that the SPCL (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Lasers) doesn't hear about this. It would probably be a good idea to have some tissues handy - some of the pics are quite gory. The pointer was still alive at the beginning of this process and while no critical organs were damaged by the abuse, it will never likely be quite the same even with generous use of duct tape and bailing wire. :) For a less gory procedure (reversible, at least in principle) that should work with minor modifications for several models of green laser pointers, see the chapter:

    BIRD DISSECTION
Prepared by Dennis Paulson Bear in mind that it is illegal to possess migratory birds or their parts, so this exercise is best done in association with a university or museum. If you are working in a classroom situation, you may also have a variety of types of birds available; this will provide a much better idea of the variations in bird anatomy. If not, a single individual will suffice for the exercise. By dissecting a bird, which means "take it apart," you will be able to look at any part of it you wish. The major goal of this exercise is for you to learn something, so if you are being supervised, ask questions any time your curiosity is piqued or you're not sure what you're looking at (or for). By handling it and using your imagination, understand the difference in proportions of the bird with and without its feathers. A bird without feathers is shaped something like a turtle, with compact trunk, long neck, and short tail ( uropygium ). The neck is highly flexible because of the number of vertebrae and type of vertebral connections, and the bird can easily reach every part of its body with its bill, which is the equivalent of the grasping organ formed by our own opposable thumb and fingers. The bird with all its feathers presents a rather different appearance, as the wings and tail are then prominent features and the neck is much less obvious in many species. All the small feathers of the body are called

    lymph node

One of the most talked about new surgical techniques in breast cancer is sentinel lymph node dissection. This is an alternative to standard axillary lymph node dissection , and many women believe that it can spare them more invasive surgery and side effects. However, the sentinel node procedure is not appropriate for everyone. It has its own limitations and drawbacks, and must be done by a surgeon who has significant experience with the technique. breastcancer.org Info Download the PDF of our booklet: Your Guide to Breast Cancer Treatment , or order a free printed version The dictionary defines "sentinel" as a guard, watchdog, or protector. Likewise, the sentinal lymph node is the first node "standing guard" for your breast. In sentinel lymph node dissection, the surgeon looks for the very first lymph node that filters fluid draining away from the area of the breast that contained the breast cancer. If cancer cells are breaking away from the tumor and traveling away from your breast via the lymph system, the sentinel lymph node is more likely than other lymph nodes to contain cancer. Legal Breakthroughs
The sight of a partially dissected frog is one familiar to generations of science students. But over the past decade, interactive software and online simulations have made it possible to study the inner workings of animals without cutting them up.
Can virtual dissection replace the real thing? In 1987, a California high school student named Jenifer Graham risked having her grade lowered when she refused to dissect a frog in science lab. Her protest led to a new law in California, a documentary film about her case, and a changing attitude toward animal dissection in schools around the country. The California law lets students refuse to perform such dissections. According to the advocacy group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), six other states have followed suit, including Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. Massachusetts and Illinois are considering similar legislation. PETA estimates that almost 6 million frogs a year are bred and killed for dissection. Many science courses use dissection to give students a better understanding of frog anatomy and a specific look at internal organs and muscles.
