Students shunning animal dissection ritual
Story Tools (AP) Increasing numbers of students are asking to opt out of the science class ritual of dissecting frogs or fetal pigs, branding the practice cruel and insisting they can learn as much from computer simulations. A 16-year-old honor student in Baltimore was removed from her anatomy class last week after refusing to dissect a cat, then allowed back in with the option of computer alternatives after protesters picketed the high school. In Las Vegas, the Clark County School Board voted earlier this year to let students opt out of dissections if they have parental support. "They won't learn much with their eyes closed because they're disgusted." Amy Richards, student opposing dissection The new policy was adopted after a petition drive led by eighth-grader Laurie Wolff, an A student who received a C in a science class two years earlier after declining to cut up an earthworm. Anti-dissection students also appealed for policy changes this year at a school board meeting in Little Chute, Wisconsin, and last year before a state Senate committee in Vermont.

46. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Moral Aspect Of Vivisection
Defined literally the word vivisection signifies the dissection of living creatures.
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15494a.htm
Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... V > Moral Aspect of Vivisection A B C D ... Z
Moral Aspect of Vivisection
Defined literally the word vivisection signifies the dissection of living creatures; ordinarily it means any scientific experiment on animals involving the use of the scalpel; incorrectly it is used for any experimental observations of animals under abnormal conditions. The literal dissection of living animals is practised nowhere, as it is much more convenient to study the structure of man's body in the cadaver. According to Aulus Cornelius Celsus, who lived in the reign of Tiberius , and Tertullian (about 160-240) living criminals were dismembered at Alexandria in the reigns of Ptolemy II (285-247 B.C.) and Ptolemy III (247-221 B.C.). The same act was maliciously attributed to Jacobus Berengarius, Andreas Vesalius, and Gabriel Fallopius, celebrated anatomists of the sixteenth century. The history of scientific observation of and experimentation upon animals, both bloodless and bloody, began at the moment when it was perceived that the processes of nature could be discovered only by the exact observation of nature and not by philosophical methods. For physiological and pathological research experimentation with animals is an indispensable aid, while for medical science it is of much value. It gives a view of the working processes of the living organism, permits us to produce diseases artificially, and to investigate the organic changes produced by these diseases in each stage of their course.

Purpose: In this lab, you will dissect an earthworm in order to observe the external and internal structures of earthworm anatomy. Background: Among the most familiar invertebrate animals are the earthworms, members of the phylum Annelida . The word annelida means "ringed" and refers to a series of rings or segments that make up the bodies of the members of this phylum. Internally, septa , or dividing walls, are located between the segments. There may be more than 100 segments in an adult worm. The

Scriptural Prelude
When Jesus saw the crowds he went up on the mountainside.
After he had sat down his disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them:
How blest are the poor in spirit: the reign of God is theirs.
Blest too are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled.
Blest are the lowly; they shall inherit the land.
Blest are they who hunger and thirst for holiness;
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God. Blest too are the peacemakers; they shall be called children of God. Blest are those persecuted for holiness' sake; the reign of God is theirs. Blest are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me.

Objectives:
Describe the appearance of various organs found in a crayfish.
Name the organs that make up systems of the crayfish. Materials:
safety goggles, gloves, magnifying glass, a lab apron, plastic ziplock bag preserved crayfish, pen, dissecting tray, paper towels, scissors, forceps, dissecting needle, and dissecting pins. Purpose:
In this lab, you will observe the external structures of a crayfish and dissect it to study its internal structures and systems. Background:
Like all crustaceans, a crayfish has a fairly hard exoskeleton that covers its body. As shown in the diagram on the next page, its body is divided into two main parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. The cephalothorax consists of the cephalic (or head) region and the thoracic region. The part of the exoskeleton that covers the cephalothorax is called the carapace. The abdomen is located behind the cephalothorax and consists of six clearly divided segments. The cephalothorax consists of 13 segments. Each segment of both the cephalothorax and the abdomen contains a pair of appendages. The head (or cephalic) region has five pairs of appendages. The antennules are organs of balance, touch, and taste. Long

A Buddhist view of using animals for research and classroom dissection. Robert A. Leopold for Heartland Sangha in Illinois, US.

Does a Dog Have
Buddha Nature?
By Robert A. Leopold
The answer to this Zen koan has always seemed obvious to me... so I guess I need to spend a lot more time on my cushion!
But what about this related question: Is a dog a sentient being? If you've ever owned a dog, and seen him happy, sad, lonely, angry, or guilty, (such as after he has gotten into the kitchen garbage can and made a mess), the answer to this is obviously 'yes.' And now, the European scientific community officially agrees with that viewpoint.
As reported in the New Scientist (June 28, 1997; page 11), and NATURE (July 3, 1997; page 11), the European Union has officially recognized that animals have feelings. So now, in Europe at least, the definition of animals (including dogs, of course), will be changed to 'sentient beings,' rather than having them classified as goods or agricultural products, when policies are formulated regarding agriculture, transport, and medical research.
In the long run, this development may have a positive impact on how humans perceive non-human animals, and help to reduce the suffering of animals. In the meantime, however, there are concrete things you can do to help reduce the suffering of our fellow sentient beings.
Every year, thousands of animals experience great suffering in the name of 'research.' It could be argued that a tiny handful of these research experiments have indeed benefited mankind. But there are countless thousands of instances of humans bringing needless suffering to bear on sentient animals. For example, many cosmetic products and household chemicals are 'tested for safety' for humans using procedures such as the infamous Draize test. In this test, the substance under investigation is put into the eye of a live, healthy rabbit, and left there. The degree to which the eye deteriorates is noted by the 'researcher,' and this data is used to determine how safe the product is for humans to use.

Dissection Portions of this entry contributed by Gavid Theobald Any two rectilinear figures with equal area can be dissected into a finite number of pieces to form each other. This is the Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien theorem . For minimal dissections of a triangle pentagon , and octagon into a square , see Stewart (1987, pp. 169-170) and Ball and Coxeter (1987, pp. 89-91). The triangle to square dissection ( haberdasher's problem ) is particularly interesting because it can be built from hinged pieces which can be folded and unfolded to yield the two shapes (Gardner 1961; Stewart 1987, p. 169; Pappas 1989; Steinhaus 1999, pp. 3-4; Wells 1991, pp. 61-62). Laczkovich (1988) proved that the circle can be squared in a finite number of dissections ( ). Furthermore, any shape whose boundary is composed of smoothly curving pieces can be dissected into a

Cube Dissection A cube can be divided into n subcubes for only n = 1, 8, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29, 34, 36, 38, 39, 41, 43, 45, 46, and (Sloane's ; Hadwiger 1946; Scott 1947; Gardner 1992, p. 297). This sequence provides the solution to the so-called Hadwiger problem , which asks for the largest number of subcubes (not necessarily different) into which a cube cannot be divided by plane cuts, and has the answer 47 (Gardner 1992, pp. 297-298). If m and n are in the sequence, so is since n -dissecting one cube in an m -dissection gives an -dissection. The numbers 1, 8, 20, 38, 49, 51, 54 are in the sequence because of dissections corresponding to the equations
Combining these facts gives the remaining terms in the sequence, and all numbers and it has been shown that no other numbers occur (D. Hickerson).

How Singing Fish Work
by Jeff Tyson Table of Contents Introduction to How the Singing Fish Works Inside the Fish Inside the Plaque Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Lately it seems that every time you turn around, there's a fish singing a song to you! Boogie Bass, Big Mouth Billy Bass, Rocky Rainbow Trout and other variations have become enormously popular as novelties and gag gifts. You've probably seen one at a store in the mall, at the flea market or on television. Looking deceptively like a normal stuffed fish mounted on a plaque, it is actually a robot that begins to sing and move when someone walks up to it. As the fish swings his head out from the plaque, he lip-syncs to a prerecorded 30-second clip of a popular song or spits out a savvy one-liner. For the unsuspecting viewer, a singing mounted fish can be quite a humorous surprise, which seems to be the key to its charm. Singing Bass A Note to Our International Readers If you live outside of the United States, you are probably unfamiliar with the singing fish we are discussing in this article. You may, in fact, think it is the most ridiculous thing you have ever seen! Like the Pet Rock of the early 1980s, the singing fish is a fad in true American fashion!
