I believe that we'll be selling hardware for a good long time. For
something as critical as a file server, most large companies don't want
to screw around with rolling their own solutions or playing
finger-pointing games between multiple vendors. We actually considered
the software only approach when we started NetApp, but couldn't figure
out how to make it work.
The strong analogy between NetApp and Cisco made us more comfortable
with selling hardware. Cisco's primary value has always been their
software, yet they package it as a hardware product. They have specialized their hardware somewhat over time, but the early prototype systems were actually based on Sun hardware, and early real systems

Back to The Peanuts-Archive The Peanuts-Archive's FAQ Classic NEXTSTEP/OpenStep FAQ Black (NeXT) hardware
What disk drives will work with the NeXT? There are some situations in which there are problems. Here is a short list which might help you in your disk drive quest:
  • These drives don't work with NeXT hardware: FUJITSU 2684SAU, SEAGATE ST51080N, IBM IB06H8891
  • The SCSI driver for NeXT hardware only accepts asynchronous data transfer. Although every new SCSI-2 drive should support this mode, this isn't true for certain drives. Also sometimes there is a hardware switch (a little jumper on the drive) which switches between synchronous and asynchronous mode. You definitly can only use asynchronous disks!
  • There are also problems with sync negotiation on NeXT hardware. In general there should be another jumper to toggle this are you might change this with an SCSI utility. There are also problems with the tagged command queuing option. Anyway all these problem can be solved. Often these problems arise with IBM drives. We recommand to look in the technical documentation of the drive, which is available only from IBM's WWW site directly.
Most SCSI disk drives will work without modifying /etc/disktab There are problems with the installation of boot blocks and badly formed fstab generated by BuildDisk of NEXTSTEP 2.0. A disk connected to the NeXT will need to have a NeXT specific label written to it before it can be properly recognized by the system. If you get an error message "Invalid Label..." this indicates that the drive was successfully seen by the NeXT machine but it does not have the proper label, to install a label use the

No one-size-fits-all data protection solution

Jon Toigo says D2D is a fast, slick and automatic business continuance solution, but he believes it is still premature to consider it a replacement for tape. In this column, he discusses the real and proposed benefits of D2D and how it compares to traditional data protection offerings. (April 1, 2003)

How to use third-party copy for backups

Third-party copy is a backup technique where an intelligent device not the backup server moves the backup data stream from disk to tape. Storage networking expert Chris Poelker clarifies how third-party copy works, how it differs from extended copy and if this technique is currently an industry standard. (March 13, 2003)

How to do hybrid backup

Disk backups have many advantages, but you need to consider cost and business continuance factors before giving up on tape altogether. Instead of using one or the other for backup, this tip suggests using disk and tape together. Read about strategies for using hybrid, disk-to-tape backups. (March 18, 2003)

Scala - Hardware FAQ / Hardware Stability Guide
How does hard disk drive configuration impact Scala performance and stability?
Hardware FAQ Solution #17, Hard Disk Drives (last modified 04/20/2004):
Isn't it amazing how the fastest of computer workstations can be made to appear slow through the inappropriate configuration of its hard disk drive storage system? While computers have increased in performance by a factor of 2000 in the past twenty years and hard disk drives have increased in capacity by at least a factor of 10,000, the "average seek time" of hard disk drives has really only improved by a factor of 10. It is this "average seek time"-the speed at which a hard disk drive get actually get TO the data on a disk platter that is one of the major limitations on the performance of an IC Player. When planning the layout of files and partitions on are hard disk the goal is to minimize the overall time the drive will spend getting to the data it needs to retrieve. The following techniques can prove useful:
  • In a single logical volume disk system,(such as ONE Hard Disk Drive or ONE RAID-1 or RAID- 5 HD set), separate files that change frequently from files at almost never change. The means that if a given player is going to receive frequent updates of artwork; place these frequently changing files on a disk partition of their own.

Roundup : 13 IDE Hard Disk Drives
Posted on Sunday, September 22 2002 @ 06:40:34 CEST by LSDsmurf
X-bit Labs
has made a roundup of 13 HDD's ! At first, we planned to carry out the performance comparison for three Western Digital HDDs with the large cache-buffer (WD800JB, WD1000JB and WD1200JB). A comparison like that could show us how WD hard disks with different storage capacity and the same cache-buffer perform compared with one another. But all these tests couldn't answer the most urgent question: what the slowest member of the JB family looks against the background of its competitors from other manufacturers (of the same capacity, but with a 2MB cache-buffer). Moreover, as I applied the new testing methodology and used new benchmarks to test the WD800JB, I found myself in the already familiar situation when there's nothing to compare the new disk drive with…
In the end, a small article about a better value WD800JB with smaller storage capacity nevertheless being as fast as both WD1000JB and WD1200JB, turned into a comprehensive roundup of hard drives with IDE-interface. It comes on the threshold of the invasion of new HDDs. Let me remind you that we expected new HDDs with 60GB platters, new interface, etc. to arrive in the end of the summer or the beginning of the fall.

Disk Drives In A Spin
By Terry Sweeney
The disk-drive sector of storage is in a spin, owing to technical, security and business issues that are reshaping the products. First, a researcher found that only 10 percent of the hard drives he bought on eBay had been scoured of all personal information, while at the same time an industry consortium is pushing a plan for removable hard drives. I wonder how many IT professionals feel more secure knowing hard drives can now be more easily walked out of the building in a briefcase or back pocket? Toshiba also unveiled a 100-gigabyte 2.5 inch drive that packs more storage power per square inch than anything ever, the vendor said. And researchers at Stanford experimenting with read-write speeds said that acceleration can't continue forever. Still, the threshold for topping out is about 1,000 times faster than current technology, so no need to rewrite next year's budget just yet. And investment banker Merrill Lynch downgraded Seagate's rating this week, noting that the vendor's "business model appeared broken." Seagate's margins are under attack more than ever, and the Merrill downgrade just underscores how commoditized and competitive the low end of the disk drive market has become.
