Below is an illustration of what the inside of the hard disk drive may look like. The four main components of a hard disk drive are the platters head arm chassis , and the head actuator The majority of computer hard disk drives are permanently stored in an internal drive bay at the front of the computer and are connected with one ATA SCSI cable and power cable. Unlike other drives the hard disk drive is the only drive that is not physically accessed by the user like the floppy disk drive or the CD-ROM drive SIZE INFORMATION The capacity of a computer hard disk drives and the files it contains can be confusing. Below is a listing of the standards in different size values. It is important to realize that not all manufacturers and developers use these values. For example, a manufacturer may consider a gigabyte as the value of a gibibyte.

disk drive Last modified: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 A machine that reads data from and writes data onto a disk . A disk drive rotates the disk very fast and has one or more heads that read and write data. There are different types of disk drives for different types of disks. For example, a hard disk drive (HDD) reads and writes hard disks , and a floppy drive (FDD) accesses floppy disks . A magnetic disk drive reads magnetic disks, and an optical drive reads optical disks Disk drives can be either internal (housed within the computer ) or external (housed in a separate box that connects to the computer).

3.5 inch Floppy Disk Drives use a 34 wire header (pin) connector to connect to the Floppy Disk Drive Interface. The power connector is a small four pin device, and modern 3.5 inch drives only use the +5 volt supply.
A 3.5 inch floppy disk drive uses a 34 pin header (pin) connector to the interface A modern 5.25 inch Floppy Disk Drive uses a direct drive motor to rotate the floppy disk media. 5.25 inch drives use a 34 wire edge connector to connect to the Floppy Disk Drive Interface, and a large 4 pin power connector to supply +5 volt and +12 volt to the drive.
A typical direct drive floppy disk drive motor. The motor rotates the disk media at a constant speed.
  • Normal (Double Density) disks are rotated at 300 RPM
  • High Density (Quad Density) disks are rotated at 360 RPM

A floppy disk drive interface cable has a 34 pin header socket on the interface end
  • The A: drive connectors are at the other end of the cable and usually have a twist to transpose the wires to pins 10 to 16.
  • Most floppy drive cables have both edge connectors (for 5.25 inch drives) and header connectors (for 3.5 inch drives) in both drive positions on the cable.

Disk drives that use the IDE interface have been identified as containing language that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature, and one organisation wants suppliers to do something about it Disk drives may the latest victim of political correctness. According to a memo apparently sent out by the County of Los Angeles, the standard designation used for connecting two disk drives to a single IDE port, which entails setting one drive as a "master" and the second as a "slave" drive, is an example of equipment labelling that may be "construed as offensive or defamatory in nature". According to the memo, which was apparently written by Joe Sandoval, division manager for purchasing and contract services in the Internal Services Department at the County of Los Angeles, and posted on urban legends Web site snopes.com, use of the terms "master" and "slave" is not acceptable as an identification label. "We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labelling of equipment or components thereof that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature before such equipment is sold or otherwise provided to any County department," said Sadoval in the memo.

Nickel whiskers promise disks with a thousand times more storage than today's finest Researchers at an American university have produced a nanoscale device that can sense magnetic fields more than a hundred times weaker than current techniques allow. If applied to hard disks this could increase storage by a factor of up to a thousand, they claim, effectively turning today's 200-gigabyte disks into 200-terabyte devices. Susan Hua and Harsh Deep Chopra, both professors at the State University of New York at Buffalo, say that the new system uses an effect called ballistic magnetoresistance. Most importantly, it works well at room temperature and would be easy to integrate with current disk drive manufacturing. The sensors are made from nanometre-sized nickel whiskers strung between two much larger nickel electrodes. The whiskers are so fine that electrons have to travel in a straight 'ballistic' line across them, as opposed to the normal drunken stagger that goes on in thicker conductors. Because of this restriction, even small magnetic fields have a large effect on the ease with which the electrons move. Although this effect has been known for some time, Hua and Chopra claim to have invented a way to efficiently and repeatedly produce devices with known parameters.

Hot-Plug Configuration Rules
The following rules apply for your system:
  • You must use Sun supported standard 3.5 inch wide and 1 inch high (8.89 cm x 2.5 cm) disk drives that are FC-AL compatible and run at 10,000 revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • The FC-AL IDs for the disks are hardwired on the disk backplanes. There is no need to set any jumpers on the disk drives themselves. The FC-AL target address of each disk drive is determined by the slot location where the drive is connected to its FC-AL backplane.
  • The internal disk drives share the internal FC-AL with the external FC-AL connector.
