Disk-drives How to align a disk-drive? Can I make a LS-120 disk-drive to boot on a Pentium-100? A: drive doesn't work Syquest Sparq 1.0GB external drive ... How to copy special-formatted disks I need to align a 3 1/2" disk drive. I've heard that I'll need a program called "cat eyes", which does this alignment. Where can I get this software? I have a Pentium-100 PC. Can I install a Super Disk LS-120 as A: drive and boot from it? In order to boot from the LS-120 drive, you will have to perform a BIOS upgrade on your PC (if its BIOS is a Flash-BIOS type). You will need to download the BIOS flashing utility at your motherboard manufacturer's website. If you don't know who is the manufacturer of your motherboard, use the Ctbios program, which is available at our download area Just after reading a disk from the A: drive, my PC "thinks" that I didn't changed the disk. I give a Dir command and the computer shows the contents of the first disk! How can I solve this problem?

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 98080 - Windows NT can take advantage of hard drives with more than 1024 cylinders if your computer hardware permits. While Windows NT does not have an internal limit to the number of cylinders it can address, there are some hardware configurations where Windows NT must contend with a 10 bit (1024 cylinder) limitation, imposed by the supporting hardware (the hard drive controller or system BIOS in most cases). This article describes how the ATDISK driver determines drive geometry. Other hard disk drivers are not included here, as the 1024 cylinder limitation usually doesn't apply. The other drivers, including SCSI disk drivers, use absolute block addressing.

  • Previous page A drive is the name for several types of storage media. There are also storage media, which are not drives (RAM, Tape Streamers), but on these pages, we will discuss the drives. Common to drive medium is:
  • A file system can be assigned to them.
  • They are recognized by the operating system and they are assigned a drive letter During start up, drives are typically recognized by the PC system software (ROM BIOS + operating system). Thus, the PC knows which drives are installed. At the end of this configuration, the appropriate drive letter is identified with each drive. If a drive is not "seen" during start up, it will not be accessible to the operating system. However, some external drives contain special soft-ware, allowing them to be connected during operation.

    The PC Guide
Hard Disk Drives Reference Guide - Hard Disk Drives Author: Charles M. Kozierok The hard disk drive in your system is the "data center" of the PC. It is here that all of your programs and data are stored between the occasions that you use the computer. Your hard disk (or disks) are the most important of the various types of permanent storage used in PCs (the others being floppy disks and other storage media such as CD-ROMs, tapes, removable drives, etc.) The hard disk differs from the others primarily in three ways: size (usually larger), speed (usually faster) and permanence (usually fixed in the PC and not removable). Hard disk drives are almost as amazing as microprocessors in terms of the technology they use and how much progress they have made in terms of capacity, speed, and price in the last 20 years. The first PC hard disks had a capacity of 10 megabytes and a cost of over $100 per MB. Modern hard disks have capacities approaching 100 gigabytes and a cost of less than 1 cent per MB! This represents an improvement of 1,000,000% in just under 20 years, or around 67% cumulative improvement per year. At the same time, the speed of the hard disk and its interfaces have increased dramatically as well.

HDDs with NCQ to Be Released Shortly
    by Anton Shilov
Seagate Technology is promising to deliver its hard disk drives with support for Native Command Queuing – a technology that boosts performance of Serial ATA-150 drivers. NCQ technology enables the hard drive to intelligently reorder and optimize both read and write command execution, improving the performance of queued workloads by minimizing mechanical positioning latencies on the drive. NCQ is a command protocol in Serial ATA that can only be implemented on native Serial ATA hard drives. It allows multiple commands to be outstanding within a drive at the same time. Drives that support NCQ have an internal queue where outstanding commands can be dynamically rescheduled or re-ordered, along with the necessary tracking mechanisms for outstanding and completed portions of the workload. NCQ also has a mechanism that allows the host to issue additional commands to the drive while the drive is seeking for data for another command.

Today we are going to compare the performance of 20 hard disk drives with 80GB storage capacity from IBM-Hitachi, Western Digital, Samsung, Seagate and Maxtor. Hopefully, this indepth test session will help you to make the right choice for your needs.
    Table of contents:
Pages: Every time we changed, however slightly, our testing methods or shifted to another testbed, we found ourselves where we had started – all old test results would become void, while new results are too scanty for an accurate comparison of different devices. Such a change of the testbed happened some time ago and again it told negatively on how fast the new reviews appeared as well as on the number and scope of hard disk drives we include into our tests.
