50 YEARS NIAID HOMEPAGE INFECTIOUS DISEASES IMMUNOLOGIC DISEASES AIDS ... NIH HOMEPAGE An Attack on Self Tissues
W hen the immune system mistakes self tissues for nonself and mounts an inappropriate attack, the result is an autoimmune disease. There are many different autoimmune diseases. Some examples are Wegener's granulomatosis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Autoimmune diseases can each affect the body in different ways. For instance, the autoimmune reaction is directed against the brain in multiple sclerosis and the gut in Crohn's disease. In other diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), affected tissues and organs may vary among individuals with the same disease. Many autoimmune diseases are rare. As a group, however, they afflict millions of Americans. Most autoimmune diseases strike women more often than men, particularly affecting women of working age and during their childbearing years.

National Women's Health Week starts on Mother's Day each year.

The purpose is to emphasize the importance of getting regular check-ups and asking a doctor about screenings for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Maintaining regular check-ups is one of five health habits that can contribute to the betterment of women's health along with exercise, a healthy diet, not smoking, and following general safety rules.
Many of the leading causes of death among women, such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, can be successfully prevented or treated if the warning signs are caught early enough.
    • Heart disease is the number one killer of American women. Often thought of as a man's disease, more women die of heart disease each year than do men. Cancer is the second leading cause of death of American women. Lung cancer is the top cancer killer among American women, with an estimated 65,000 deaths in 2002, followed by breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Stroke is the number three killer of American women. Each year, 30,000 more women than men have strokes.

Children are subject to almost all the diseases of adulthood, plus several that are unique to childhood. Many infections and disorders that are trivial for a normal, healthy adult, assume serious overtones in children. Illnesses often progress faster in children, too. For these reasons, any disease in a child or baby should not be taken lightly. The spectrum of childhood illness is vast, and this page attempts to describe a few important diseases.
