Issues in Providing Learning Support for Disabled Students Undertaking Fieldwork and Related Activities
Examples of Good Practice in Higher Education Institutions Offering Field Classes
Planning field experience, travel, sites, activities
Having established the overall context within which a department operates its fieldwork requirements, specific arrangements will need to underpin the selection of field class destinations and sites, associated travel and activities. Students may need to be reminded to complete declarations of their particular needs. This will alert tutors to specific needs which will require accommodating somewhere, and the data from which will increasingly inform the general practice in considering the advantages and disadvantages of particular destinations, travel arrangements and sites. The general characteristics of the activities which will be undertaken on arrival will also need careful consideration. There are many examples of good practice in this area, and authoritative guides on meeting particular needs (Boxes 24 and 25).
Box 24: The Open University approach to advising students on the availability of fieldwork options
The Open University is one of the largest providers of courses in geography, earth and environmental sciences in the UK and routinely runs sets of field classes involving hundreds of distance-learning students. Since the majority of these are mature entrants who chose to participate in a degree course, the number of disabled students tends to be disproportionately high. As a consequence the University is experienced and has a positive and supportive approach to disability, and clear policies on inclusion. It has developed an extensive range of guidance notes for course tutors, and excellent documentation which goes out to students considering their attendance at a residential school. The University will also provide (and pay for) personal helpers, who may be family members if this is most appropriate (see

Adolescent and Adult Issues
Adolescents have much different issues than younger children. This is a time when many decisions have to be made about a disabled person's future. Independence is possible for some high functioning autistics, others may need plans for their continuing care. Difficult behaviour and emotional problems such as depression may also increase during adolescence. Issues covered on this page, and on individual pages as more information becomes available, include: transition (from high school), post secondary education, housing, employment, and other independence issues.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Legal resolutions, concerns of parents, and new research on learning and socialization have led to widespread efforts to place students with special needs in regular classrooms, a practice known as "inclusion." According to the report on Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering (1996), approximately 6% of children in the United States were in federally-supported special educational programs during the 1992-1993 school year, up 1.5% from 15 years earlier. The number of disabled students participating in regular classrooms has risen by 10% during the last five years (Roach et al., 1997). The manifestation of particular disabilities varies widely among students with special needs, but over half of the identified disabilities are learning disabilities. Other disabilities include speech and language difficulties, mental retardation, and serious emotional difficulties. Physical disabilities are relatively rare, constituting less than 2% of those identified as having disabilities (Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering:1996, 1996).

Integrated Education for Disabled Children (IEDC)
Overview

History of Education for children with disabilities began more than a century ago adopted a different line of approach; ie providing education in schools specially meant for each disability. In this context, one does not realise 'disorder' and puts them into a very disadvantageous position, not merely because of the 'discovery' but due to the lack of understanding by others in the community.
'Education for All' means, the system should bring all categories of children in the age group of 6 -14 years into the regular schooling. So educational environment in the schools must be created to fulfill the needs of all physical, intellectual, social, emotional, linguistic and other conditions.
As part of its concern for equalisation of educational opportunities, DPEP recommends integrated education in general schools for children with locomotive handicaps and with other mild disabilities.

version I would like to take a few minutes today to talk about the Special Education Reauthorization bill (S.1248) that will be voted on the floor today. I'd like to start by thanking Senators Gregg and Kennedy, in particular, for their hard work in crafting this bill over the course of the last two Congresses. This reauthorization process has truly been a bipartisan effort and is an example of what happens when partisan differences are set aside to work towards common goals. There are few more appropriate issues on which to work together than ensuring all children, regardless of there lot in life, are guaranteed an education that suits their needs. I support this bill because it's a step in the right direction. It is not perfect, but it reaches a fair compromise by giving states and schools greater administrative and fiscal flexibility, while continuing to provide parents with disabled children the assurances that their children will continue to get an appropriate education. This bill focuses on two main concepts: aligning special education law with “No Child Left Behind” and ensuring greater mechanisms are in place to allow disabled students to transition into mainstream society after high school graduation.

I. INTRODUCTION
Hi all,
II. FINDING A GOOD DENTIST FOR YOUR DISABLED CHILD/ADULT
III. LEVELS OF ANESTHESIA TO CONTROL BEHAVIOR
Most severely disabled people need some type of special help to cooperate. For some, this is just knowing the dentist and having some level of trust that they won't be hurt or that any pain will be slight and will just last a few moments (i.e. a shot). Depending on the individual patient's needs, here is what I use in decreasing order of strength when patients don't know me or won't ever cooperate:
  • General anesthesia in a hospital as an in- or an out-patient. In the US now this is very safe and the anesthesia is usually kept at low levels for general dentistry. Oral surgeons can safely do general anesthesia in their offices. Anesthesiologists are better than nurse anesthetists. All anesthesia personnel are aware that special needs people present more risks than non-disabled people and they take this into consideration when they recommend anesthesia. If you are skeptical about this, discuss risks with them far in advance of the procedure. Call the hospital and make a special trip just to have your child prescreened by the anesthesiologist, if you are worried. We do.

Pre-school institutions provide specially adapted programmes for children with moderate and severe disorders in physical and mental development. Adapted programmes in basic education are provided in zavodi za vzgojo in izobraževanje otrok in mladostnikov s posebnimi potrebami
