Welcome The Delaware and Hudson Rail Trail is a 19.8 mile long converted railroad bed in southwestern Vermont which was originally part of the Delaware and Hudson rail system that connected Rutland, Vermont with Albany, New York. The two nearly ten mile long sections extend through scenic areas of western Rutland and Bennington Counties with views of nearby hills, open farmland, forests, wetlands, end villages. The rail trail leaves Vermont and continues into New York State in three locations. However, these sections have not been developed for recreational purposes, the uses mentioned below may not be suitable and portions of the railbed have legally reverted to the adjacent private landowners. Trail Uses Trail Surface The trail surface consists of the original cinder ballast and in some locations gravel and stone. The trail, although graded, may offer a surface too soft for the narrow tires found on most ten- speed bicycles. The surface is better suited for the wider tires of mountain bikes.

Just past the rock, screened by some scrub brush and trees so it can't be seen until the last second, the path drops into a small stream bed and up the other bank. It keeps running up the side of the ravine, disappearing at the crest, like a roller coaster made out of dirt, roots and rocks. It's a shame no one can ride it. It's a shame it doesn't exist. Someday it might, if recreational vehicle riders are able to clear a path through state laws, rules and regulations. Land access for off-road recreational vehicles - snowmobiles, dirt bikes, ATVs - has come grudgingly in Ohio. Environmental group opposition, a lack of legal riding space and concerns over landowner liability have made it hard for riders to find fun and legal places to ride.
