Last update: Wed May 19 07:34:41 2004 The April 1995, April 1998, and May 2001 issues of the Communications of the ACM, and the February 1999 issue of IEEE Computer, are special issues on digital libraries. This document contains pointers to a number of WWW sites mentioned there, plus several others not mentioned. Geographical locations are provided as a possible clue to connection speed. Most offer extensive search capabilities. The June 1996 Communications of the ACM is a special issue on electronic commerce on the Internet.

In the late 1990s, the internet became so large, it was necessary to create a way to make searching it less daunting a task. Two solutions dominated the search algorithms: robots and directories. Yahoo, a young upstart internet company, created one of the first directories that received wide use. While this solution satisfied searchers for a while, it soon became apparent that Yahoo's management were paying more attention to advertising revenues than its web directory. The Yahoo staff couldn't seem to keep pace with the growth of the internet, and link rot became a problem for the links that were already included. The ODP was created in June 1998 in response to the shortcomings of Yahoo's directory. Rich Skrenta and Bob Truel came up with the idea of getting volunteers to index the internet. If they just had more manpower, they reasoned, the directory could keep up with the growth and decay cycle of the internet. Furthermore, the results of this human-powered directory would be made available to any person or company free of charge.

Arc harvests metadata from several OAI compliant archives, normalizes them, and stores them in a search service based on a relational database (MYSQL or Oracle). At present, we have over one million metadata records from over 80 data providers from various domains.

Margaret Hedstrom is Associate Prosfessor in the School of Information and Libary Studies at the University of Michigan Digital preservation: a time bomb for Digital Libraries Margaret Hedstrom The challenges of digital preservation The purpose of preservation is to ensure protection of information of enduring value for access by present and future generations (Conway, 1990: 206). Libraries and archives have served as the central institutional focus for preservation, and both types of institutions include preservation as one of their core functions. In recent decades, many major libraries and archives have established formal preservation programs for traditional materials which include regular allocation of resources for preservation, preventive measures to arrest deterioration of materials, remedial measures to restore the usability of selected materials, and the incorporation of preservation needs and requirements into overall program planning. Much remains to be done to preserve cultural, intellectual, and scholarly resources in traditional formats that form the foundation for humanities research and teaching. An estimated 80 million embrittled books reside in American libraries, 10 million of which are unique; and countless journals, newspapers, photographs, and documents require preservation treatment to survive well into the next century. Thousands of repositories lack the means for disaster prevention or adequate environmental controls to avoid catastrophic loss of their holdings. The success stories and regular use of established preservation methods are found almost exclusively in developed countries, and within developed countries in preservation of print materials in major institutions (Preservation of Archival Materials).

77. Greenstone Digital Library Software
aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries.
http://www.greenstone.org/
About Greenstone Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato , and developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO . It is open-source, multilingual software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License. The UNESCO CD-ROM containing Greenstone 2.50, plus all documentation (English/French/Spanish/Russian), plus 11 documented example collections, plus associated software like Java and ImageMagick, is now available! Copies can be obtained from Jean-Claude Dauphin (jc.dauphin@unesco.org) or Susannah Farey (s.farey@unesco.org). There is no charge. In our continual efforts to improve Greenstone, we have discovered a few glitches in the GLI version 2.50. Here is a list of known issues, with hints on how to sidestep them. We are working on a general scheme to allow you to easily upgrade your existing installation, and will release a small upgrade package soon (weeks). Download Greenstone v2.50. The Greenstone Librarian Interface (GLI), an easy-to-use frontend to Greenstone's collection-building functionality, has been extensively user tested and debugged. If you haven't already tried it, now is a great time to do so (and if you ran into problems before, please try this new version). Greenstone 2.50 also includes the new (and already very popular) PagedImgPlug plugin for processing sequences of page images, a new classifier that displays a collage of the images in a collection, provision for incremental updates of Greenstone in the future, and many other bug fixes and improvements.
