A Survey of Applications of CSCW for Digital Libraries
Michael B. Twidale and David M. Nichols
Graduate School of Library and Information Science , University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL Computing Department , Lancaster University, UK Abstract AIMS The Case for Interfaces and Collaboration It is a truism within user interface design that for the user the interface IS the system. The design of interfaces to computer systems has grown in importance along with the remarkable progress in the manufacture of increasingly powerful but cheaper computer hardware. The falling cost of hardware leads to the potential for a wider degree of access to computer systems and consequently a more divergent user base. Within the context of libraries, we shall see that forms of collaboration take many forms, including most obviously the help or reference desk. In this review we will consider a range of forms of collaborative working and technologies that might be employed to improve the effectiveness of these forms. Note that we see this as strongly related to the aims of the designers of interfaces, who are in effect pursuing a similar goal. We survey research undertaken in CSCW and related areas that we believe can serve as a useful starting point for someone considering the implementation of collaborative technologies in a information retrieval and usage context (such as a library) or someone considering research in the area. Although a number of very good survey articles on CSCW were published in the early 1990s, we are not aware of any recent ones and so in part this review also attempts to fulfil that role. As there is a substantial body of work in the field, our selection of papers has to be somewhat restrictive (despite this, it is still substantial). Therefore our survey necessarily provides only a cursory overview of some topics. We have chosen papers that themselves contain thorough reviews of a subtopic of CSCW, and those that we believe are illustrative of an approach and are particularly accessible to a reader from outside the discipline.

Digital Libraries basically store materials in electronic format and manipulate large collections of those materials effectively. Research into digital libraries is research into network information systems, concentrating on how to develop the necessary infrastructure to effectively mass-manipulate the information on the Net.. The key technological issues are how to search and display desired selections from and across large collections. Keynote Address at JCDL
Vint Cerf was the keynote speaker for the Plenary session of JCDL 2004. Cerf is known as one of the fathers of the internet, being the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols, as well as the architecture of the internet. He is currently the senior vice-president of technology strategy at MCI. Cerf's speech covered a broad range of information and internet topics. He started in a very standard way by producing some interesting statistics on the adoption of the internet - there are currently an estimated 745 million users. 31% of internet users are in Asia, 29% are in North America, and 27% are in Europe. Growth trends indicate that the majority of internet users will eventually be from Asia. Cerf then moved to some technical descriptions / observations. He talked about the naming authority pointer ( RFC 2915 ), and how eventually one might, through a single phone number or URL, be able to access a variety of services (we sort of do this already - many times when a site provides an ftp site as well as a website, you can differentiate between the two using the NAPTR - http vs. ftp). He then moved on to a brief mention of , though he didn't go into great detail about the protocol.

    I. Introduction
At the TEI and XML in Digital Libraries Workshop held at the Library of Congress on June 30-July 1, 1998, three working groups were formed. Group 2 was charged with developing a set of recommendations for libraries using the TEI Guidelines in electronic text encoding. Representatives from six libraries met at the Library of Congress on November 12-13, 1998. The Task Force met again at ALA mid-winter (January 1999) to incorporate comments and finalize the draft. The revised recommendations were circulated to the conference working group in May 1999 and presented at the joint annual meeting of the Association of Computers and the Humanities and Association of Literary and Linguistic Computing in June 1999. Version 1.0 was circulated for comments in August 1999. Return to top

    Introduction
IDL conducts research on the design and use of Digital Libraries. It forms part of the Middlesex University Interaction Design Centre (IDC) . Digital Libraries offer great potential benefits but are currently hampered by, among other things, poor usability. Existing libraries provide the core essential functionality: they serve as structured repositories of multimedia documents, and documents can be added to and retrieved from the library. The quality of the interaction depends on such systems also satisfying various non-functional requirements that relate to usability. Some of work in RIDL is focusing directly on Digital Libraries, and is particularly concerned with designing for usability. Other research is on core computer science, but using Digital Libraries as a challenging and valuable test domain.

The 2001 IFLA pre-conference for the Section of Libraries for the Blind (SLB) took place in Washington with a theme of Digital Libraries for the Blind and the Culture of Learning in the Information Age. Jenny Craven Increasing information choices through web-based technologies. The 2001 IFLA pre-conference SLB took place in Washington with a theme of Digital Libraries for the Blind and the Culture of Learning in the Information Age [1]. Papers delivered at the 2001 conference were from a wide range of subjects relating to digital libraries for the blind. Subject areas included meeting the educational needs of children and youth through libraries for the blind, digital library services and education, creating inclusive models of service and building small digital libraries for the blind. This report will focus on a selection of papers looking at how the development of the Internet and web-based technologies can be used to increase information choices for people who are blind and to enhance a culture of learning in the information age. Further details about the conference can be found on the IFLA SLB web site [2]. As a tool for the delivery of library services the Internet should offer increasing possibilities to users who are print disabled. It should enable people to access information in a format that is appropriate to their needs, which could be in a braille or audio format, or through assistive technologies. These may include speech output, braille output, tactile devices or even just through simple adjustments to a browser. Despite growing technological developments, however, a paper on
