Diet, exercise can slash diabetes risk
WASHINGTON (CNN) Americans at high risk for adult onset diabetes, known as Type 2 diabetes, can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease with a low-fat diet and daily exercise as an alternative to drug treatment, a new study showed Wednesday. A report released by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson found a 58 percent risk reduction among those who adapted so-called intensive lifestyle changes. Risk reduction hit a dramatic 71 percent in people age 60 and older who used diet and exercise to delay the onset of diabetes. Participants who were taking the oral diabetes medication Glucophage to reduce their risk saw a 31 percent reduction. The study was released a year earlier than planned because of what its sponsors called "highly positive results." There are many different meal plans used for diabetes. The following are three of the most popular.
I. THE DIABETES FOOD PYRAMID
The Food Pyramid seems to be everywhereon boxes of products in your grocery store and on the pages of popular magazines. It is all the rage the new way to teach nutrition (sorry, Four Food Groups, you are history)! The Diabetes Pyramid differs slightly from the Food Pyramid found on the back of your cereal. It consists of the following 6 categories:
- Grains, Beans and Starchy Vegetables
- Fruit
- Milk
- Vegetables
- Meat
- Fats, sweets and alcohol Each group supplies important nutrients and affects your blood sugar in a different way. You need the foods found in all of the categories, but in differing amounts. The food groups are placed in the Pyramid in order of descending serving amounts. You need to eat more servings from the lower groups and less servings from the groups that are higher up. Here is a list of the recommended number of servings from each group:
Grains, Beans and Starchy Vegetables 6 or more servings
