Sweet holiday news for diabetics
November 24, 1999 Web posted at: 9:20 AM EST (1420 GMT) In this story: Hello, sugar! Holiday survival kit Revising recipes Happy holidays ... RELATEDS By Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D. (WebMD) Many people find it hard to refuse the onslaught of sweet and creamy temptations during the holiday season. Diabetics, who must watch their sugar intake, are no different. They may say "No thank you" to the department-store Santa offering a candy cane but succumb to the pumpkin pie, Grandma's cheesecake and maybe the fruitcake that inevitably serves as the finale of any traditional holiday feast. But with a game plan, diabetics can maintain their blood sugar without completely depriving themselves. Hello, sugar!

Diabetes and diet Early studies are suggesting that people with diabetes can improve and even cure themselves of the disease by switching to an unrefined, vegan diet. In a recent study at Georgetown University, members of a group that adopted a completely vegan diet needed less medication to control blood sugars, lost twice as much weight as others in the test eating a diet approved by the American Diabetes Association (which used chicken and fish dishes), found they had lower cholesterol levels and lower protein losses and in some cases could give up their diabetes medication. About A monthly diabetes clinic is conducted at the Physiotherapy Department at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, primarily to assess for risk factors and educate on solutions. We perform footcare assessments of patients' sensation, circulation, footwear and current footcare regime. We also educate about the importance of exercise when they have diabetes. The comprehensive management of diabetes must consider the role of diet +/- medication (as discussed on DiabetesEducation.ca ), but unfortunately, exercise is often neglected from the management plan, in spite of being such an essential component. In addition, the prevention of foot problems is often neglected as well.

Diabetic Recipes
Introduction to Recipes : Some of the recipes in this site contain a small amount of sugar. The largest amount per serving is 1 teaspoon. There's nothing inherently wrong with a small amount of sugar when it's ingested with an otherwise wholesome food that contains fiber and some protein or fat. It's the concentrated sugars served in a food with no nutritional value that are detrimental to people with diabetes. Your child's blood sugar response to food is individualized; what raises one child's sugar greatly may not affect another child nearly as much. You and you child can judge by experience which foods are no-nos. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or dietician. Something like "Wholesome Brownies" may be fine for your child to have before a period of insulin and food intake can be important... [ Continue Reading

Why Did I Gain Weight When I Started Taking Insulin?
There are several factors at work to lead you to believe that insulin is "to blame" for your weight gain. People who have poorly controlled diabetes also sometimes experience weight loss because their bodies are unable to properly convert food into energy because they either are not producing enough insulin or their bodies are unable to use the insulin they produce properly. This food winds up as excess glucose circulating in the blood (resulting in high blood sugars!). Ultimately the body can't use all that extra glucose circulating in the blood and so it is eliminated in the urine. Also, once you start taking insulin injections and start getting your blood sugars under control, you now have enough insulin circulating in your blood to help the glucose in your blood to get into the body's cells where it can be used as energy. So the glucose produced by the food you eat is no longer spending time in your bloodstream and then simply being excreted out as urine. You gain weight. See also:

Diabetes and Diet 2/28/02 Four-and-a-half years ago, N'omi and I went on the Atkins diet (see note below). We are still on it, and still experiencing its benefits. From time to time, we take a few days off; it helps to "kick-start" the diet again.
At about four months into it, we had each lost almost 90 lbs. Over time, we have gained some of it back, but still weigh considerably less than we did when we started.
N'omi has not had any more heart attacks, which she had been having when we went on the diet. My mood swings have never returned.
There is a plateau effect; we're not quite sure how to overcome it. But it took years to get there.
9/2/97 As you might guess from my writings here, we are on everyone's mailing list when it comes to alternative health products. One day last month, we got one of those little books that goes at great length into a topic, and at the end offers you products or publications. This one was from Dr. Atkins, the man whose "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution" is not only one of the best-selling diet books of all time, it is one of the all-around all-time bestsellers, with 12 million copies out in 23 years, and still in print.
When N'omi and I read the booklet, we saw our symptoms. N'omi was having extensive leg problems, which we had identified principally as diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I was showing signs of hypoglycemia.

    • Glucose in the blood is produced by the liver from the foods you eat.
In a healthy person, the blood glucose level is regulated by a hormone called insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas, a small organ near the stomach that also secretes important enzymes that help in the digestion of food.
Insulin allows glucose to move from the blood into cells, where it is used for fuel.

Diet, Exercise Delay Type 2 Diabetes
At least 10 million Americans at high risk for Type 2 diabetes can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease with diet and exercise, a major clinical trial indicates. "In view of the rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in America, this good news couldn't come at a better time," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson in announcing the findings Aug. 9 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "So many of our health problems can be avoided through diet, exercise and making sure we take care of ourselves." The study also found that treatment with the oral diabetes drug Glucophage (metformin) reduces diabetes risk, though less dramatically, in people at high risk for Type 2 diabetes. Participants who were randomly assigned to intensive lifestyle intervention reduced their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. On average, this group maintained their physical activity at 30 minutes a day, usually with walking or other moderate-intensity exercise, and lost 5 percent to 7 percent of their body weight. Participants picked randomly to receive treatment with Glucophage reduced their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes by 31 percent. The study, called the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), compared diet and exercise to treatment with Glucophage in 3,234 people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a condition that often precedes diabetes. The trial ended a year early because the data had clearly answered the main research questions.

It is not going to go away after a few days of medication. You have to be on guard constantly. The good news is that diabetes can be controlled and when it is kept under control, there is much less chance of it leading to any complication. Whether it is Type I or Type II diabetes you can still lead an active life. Apart from eating chocolates, candies and substances containing refined sugar, you can eat most foods in the right measure. You need to make some small but sure lifestyle changes: Meal Plan Exercise - Exercise is recommended for all. It keeps us good looking and healthy. If you are a diabetic exercise acquires greater significance. It saves you from putting on excessive weight and keeps a check on blood pressure as well. These two factors could lead to severe complications in a diabetic. Medication Check ups - Go for them regularly. If you are highly diabetic and are not able to control it efficiently, it is better to get your blood sugar and related test done every month. In other cases the doctor may advise quarterly tests.
