Advertisement Diabetes Type 2 More than 90 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. In this disease, the body loses its ability to make efficient use of insulin to turn glucose (sugar) into energy. Sugar buildup in the blood can cause both short-term and long-term problems.
Diabetes Type 1 In type 1 diabetes, cells of the pancreas that produce insulin are destroyed. Without injections of insulin, the body of a person with type 1 diabetes cannot turn blood glucose into energy.

SCHOOL Beating Diabetes with a veggie diet
- from The Vegetarian June 1992
by dietitian Jane Brophy
The old saying 'You are what you eat' has a special meaning for vegetarians in general, but even greater significance for one particular group...
F or diabetics the choice of food really can be a matter of life and death. Diabetes affects people of all ages and both sexes and can cause blindness, kidney failure and gangrene of the hands and feet if left untreated. Diet is one of the most important ways of controlling diabetes, and a vegetarian lifestyle with its emphasis on low fat, high carbohydrate and high fibre foods is particularly suitable. This common disease, which affects more than 30 million people worldwide leaves the body unable to process food properly. Usually, most of the food we eat is digested and converted to glucose, a sugar which is carried by the blood to all cells in the body and used for energy. The hormone insulin then helps glucose pass into cells. But diabetics are unable to control the amount of glucose in their blood because the mechanism which converts sugar to energy does not work properly. Insulin is either absent, present in insufficient quantities or ineffective. As a result glucose builds up in the bloodstream and leads to problems such as weakness, inability to concentrate, loss of co-ordination and blurred vision. If the balance of food and insulin isn't right diabetics can have a "hypo", which means their blood sugar levels are too low. If not corrected this can lead to coma and even death.

More recently, many studies have established that obesity and physical inactivity are risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus and that weight loss and exercise improve insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion in the short term.
Investigators found that diet and exercise counseling resulted in a 58% reduction in diabetes risk among people who are prime candidates for developing the condition, which is associated with obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Diabetes in Cats D Although affecting cats of any breed, sex, or age, diabetes mellitus most often occurs in older, obese individuals; males are more commonly afflicted than females. The exact cause of the disease in cats is not known, although genetic predisposition, obesity, pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalances, and certain medications have all been incriminated. After a period of time, a small percentage of diabetic cats lose their requirement for specific therapy with either insulin or hypoglycemic medications. Signs of Diabetes Mellitus
Polyuria, polydipsia, increased appetite, and weight loss are hallmark signs of diabetes mellitus in cats. In the earlier stages of the disease, cats remain active and alert with few other signs of disease. However as the disease progresses, poor skin and haircoat, liver disease, and secondary bacterial infections become more common. An infrequent disorder called diabetic neuropathy may cause cats to become progressively weaker in the rear legs and assume a unique, plantigrade stance. A dangerous condition called ketoacidosis may develop in some cats. Signs of ketoacidosis include a loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, dehydration, and breathing abnormalities. Without proper and prompt treatment, this condition ultimately proves fatal. Top of Page Diagnosis
Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed based on the cat's clinical signs, physical examination findings, laboratory test results, and the persistent presence of abnormally high amounts of sugar in the blood and urine.

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Through Diet and Exercise or Drug Treatment
Reduction in the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes with Lifestyle Intervention or Metformin, by the Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group; The New England Journal of Medicine, February 7, 2002.
    Background
Here is the important background information that the authors give us:
    • type 2 diabetes is a serious and costly disease affecting 8% of adults in the U.S.,
    • the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is often delayed until complications are present,
    • current methods of treating type 2 diabetes are inadequate; therefore, prevention is preferable,
    • some of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes include elevated fasting plasma glucose concentrations, overweight, and a sedentary lifestyle. These risk factors are potentially reversible, making it possible to prevent type 2 diabetes.
    Purpose of This Study
The authors undertook this study to examine whether a lifestyle intervention or treatment with the drug metformin would prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. They also sought to understand the differences in effectiveness among these 2 interventions and whether that effectiveness differed according to age, sex, race, or ethnic group.
    Participants and Methodology
From 1996 to 1999, the authors conducted a clinical trial of 3234 people who were at high risk for diabetes. The participants, drawn from 27 centers, were nondiabetic but had elevated fasting plasma glusose concentrations - defined as a fasting plasma glucose concentraion of 95 to 125 mg. per deciliter. Their mean age was 51 years, their mean
