Although there is a strong genetic component to diabetes, diet and exercise often determine whether the genetic endowment will be expressed or not.
http://www.pcrm.org/issues/Nutrition_Curriculum/nutr_curr_4.html
Nutrition Education Curriculum Section Four:
Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Normally, insulin escorts it into the cells. In diabetes, however, insulin works poorly or not at all, allowing sugar to build up and, eventually, to filter through the kidneys into the urine. People with diabetes are at greatly increased risk for circulatory problems in the heart, eyes, kidneys, and extremities. Both insulin-dependent and non-insulin dependent forms of diabetes have strong links to diet for both their causes and treatment. Insulin-Dependent Diabetes While this hypothesis remains controversial, the evidence supporting it is strong. In 1992, the New England Journal of Medicine A 1996 research study published in The Lancet , again suggested that milk may contribute to diabetes in children. Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes In adult-onset (or non-insulin-dependent) diabetes, insulin is present in the blood, but is not working adequately. This form of the disease can improve or even disappear with the right kind of diet and exercise. Diabetes often accompanies obesity and remits with weight loss. It is also associated with high-fat diets. Although there is a strong genetic component to diabetes, diet and exercise often determine whether the genetic endowment will be expressed or not.

diet and diabetes In diabetes, the cells of the body cannot get the sugar they need. The typical American diabetes Association (ADA) diet is still high in fat.
http://www.pcrm.org/health/Preventive_Medicine/diabetes.html
Diet and Diabetes The new approach focuses more attention on fat. Fat is a problem for diabetics. The more fat there is in the diet, the harder time insulin has in getting sugar into the cell. Exactly why this occurs is not clear. But what is clear is that minimizing fat intake and reducing body fat help insulin do its job much better. Modern diabetic treatment programs drastically reduce meats, high-fat dairy products, and oils. At the same time, they increase grains, legumes, and vegetables. One study found that 21 of 23 patients on oral medications and 13 of 17 patients on insulin were able to get off of their medications after 26 days on a near-vegetarian diet and exercise program. During two- and three-year follow-ups, most diabetics treated with this regimen have retained their gains. The dietary changes are simple, but profound, and they work. Low-fat, vegetarian diets are ideal for diabetics. There is a second essential component to managing diabetes. Through regular exercise, the need for insulin injections can often be reduced, and oral medications often become unnecessary. This holds true not only for people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes, but also to some extent for those with insulin-dependent diabetes. Exercising muscles have a voracious appetite for fuel. When an individual is engaged in regular aerobic exercise, the sugar is able to enter the cells without the need for as much, or perhaps any, insulin.

New Research
There has been a lot of progress in the causes of type 2 diabetes. However, being overweight is harmful. First, it makes your body 'resistant' to insulin, so you need more insulin that you would if you were an ideal weight. As insulin shortage is the main cause of diabetes, this becomes a real problem; you become even more short of insulin. Secondly, some fat is deposited in the pancreatic cells that make the insulin, the beta type of islet cells. Some researchers have found that this fat damages these cells, which stop making as much insulin. So there are many reasons to lose weight, but like many things in life, losing weight is often a very hard battle. However, if you avoid all the food that is very fattening, like cakes, chocolate and full fat dairy food, and have small portions of fattening food like meat and fish, and combine this with an hours walking a day (perhaps 2 x half hour walks), most people will make good progress.

Diet, exercise can slash diabetes risk
WASHINGTON (CNN) Americans at high risk for adult onset diabetes, known as Type 2 diabetes, can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease with a low-fat diet and daily exercise as an alternative to drug treatment, a new study showed Wednesday. A report released by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson found a 58 percent risk reduction among those who adapted so-called intensive lifestyle changes. Risk reduction hit a dramatic 71 percent in people age 60 and older who used diet and exercise to delay the onset of diabetes. Participants who were taking the oral diabetes medication Glucophage to reduce their risk saw a 31 percent reduction. The study was released a year earlier than planned because of what its sponsors called "highly positive results." Sitting on a doctor's examining table wearing nothing but a paper dress is pretty intimidating all by itself. However, when the doctor has flipped through your most recent lab reports and pronounces, "You have diabetes," you could be standing buck-nekkid in an airport, because your world is turned completely upside down, and nothing is ever the same again. If you are like me, you simply grabbed the printed copy of the "American Diabetes Association 1800-calorie-a-day Diet," your prescriptions for oral medication, a glucose meter and test strips, and walked out of the office in a daze. To a newly-diagnosed diabetic, I say this: LEARN. You've been handed a life-changing diagnosis, but it doesn't have to be life defeating. The first place you should go is to the bookstore and buy a copy of Gretchen Becker's book, The First Year Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed.

Diabetes and Diet By Jay B. Lavine, M.D.
What'll it be? Pasta primavera or hamburger without the bun? Tossed green salad or steak tartare? Can diet prevent diabetes? If so, which approach is best for your body's fuel system? The double barrel carb or the dual exhaust protein? Most people think of a diabetic diet as one with no added sugar (which is no longer true, by the way). But it's not that simple. True, a major study found that people who develop diabetes tend to consume foods with a slightly higher glycemic index than people who don't develop diabetes. The glycemic index is a measure of how much your blood sugar is affected by eating a given food. It turns out that many starchy foods do raise your blood sugar more than other foods. For example, bread, including whole wheat bread, raises your blood sugar as much as white sugar does, and potatoes raise your sugar even more than that. On the other hand, one recent study showed that women who consume higher amounts of whole grains have a lower risk of developing diabetes as other women. So glycemic index isn't everything. It may just be that the slightly higher glycemic index diet of those developing diabetes simply reflects what we might call a junk food diet the standard American diet, high in sugary snacks and fats but low in the complex carbohydrates found in plant foods.

Diabetes and Diet
Return to Diet and Degeneration Main Menu This knowledge has been known for 38 years, yet diabetics are not generally informed about this dietary matter, and this results in much needless suffering, tremendous profits for the medical and pharmaceutical industry, and needless early death for many people. Willfull criminal negligence? Yes. There is a rare and very serious form of diabetes called childhood onset diabetes which in many ways is a different disease. It is a situation in which the pancreas has been injured and cannot make enough insulin, or in some cases any insulin at all. Despite this kind of problem, maintaining a meat/egg/dairy fee diet and having fiber in the diet reduces the need for external insulin by as much as 30%.

How Strange Our Diet Is!
document.write ( "E-mail this copy of the Natural Diet by Karl Loren to a friend" ); Write To Karl About This Top Our Government recommends EXACTLY the wrong diet, and we eat it! It is painfully obvious to me that the medical profession urges you to use EXACTLY the wrong diet for diabetes, and for that matter, heart disease. The government then enforces this wrong diet. Unbelievably they tell you that it is OK to eat sugar and that your diet should be high in carbohydrates, low in protein. The exact opposite of these recommendations is the truth. In all my 15+ years of exposing government lies, this is now the biggest and worst of them all! These Government-recommended diets CAUSE diabetes and heart disease! This page was first publis hed in 2000. Now, near the end of 2001, the government is finally admitting that the data here is true!
