Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Credits
Introduction Beginning with the Vikings in the 8th century, the Americas have been explored by many people. During the 1500's and 1600's European countries began exploring across the Atlantic Ocean . Christopher Columbus was one of the first explorers to attempt this great feat. His accomplishments sparked the interest of exploration in many other countries. Explorers have had various reasons for risking their lives when setting out across the world. Marco Polo was searching for new trade routes, David Livingston traveled across Africa as a missionary, while others were motivated by the need to chart and map new areas. In this webquest, you will find out what drove the exploration for these significant explorers and how did the motives for explorations differ from country to country?
The Task You will work in your assigned group to search the Internet and use print materials to identify what drove the exploration of your explorers. During your search you will be looking for certain aspects of his exploration. Once you have obtained these aspects, you will be able to complete the following:

Introduction Although the Vikings traveled to North America more than 900 years ago, it was Christopher Columbus' good luck in 1492 that whipped Europe into a frenzy. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the Spanish Monarchs whom funded Columbus' exploration, were the first to realize the potential wealth of the New World. Spain became the richest and most powerful nation in the world. "How long will it last? ........No one knows. More importantly, will other European Countries allow Spain to reign supreme?
That remains to be seen........"

-Pirate Edward Corrigan Top of page
The Task Pirate Corrigan is a ruthless man who preys on explorers. He has assigned your motley group to spy on the European Explorers whom are heading to North America. Pirate Corrigan requests that all groups create a death warrant (via a web page) for only the most exceptional explorer. Based on the scoring rubric , Pirate Corrigan will handsomely reward any group that successfully completes the assignment. However, anyone caught to be a coward...
(failing to complete the task)
......will walk the plank!!!!!

    Age of Exploration
Age of Exploration In all civilizations, people have engaged in some form of exploration. These who are considered to be explorers are individuals who traveled long distances to unfamiliar areas for a certain purpose. Some have traveled to learn about an area, and others leave for adventure. Still others hoped to gain wealth and fame for themselves. Even though exploration has existed since the beginning of civilization, the great age of exploration began around the 1400s. Europeans wanted to buy products from Asia, jewels, silk, and spices. Explorers tried to find routes to Asia. In addition to finding a sea route to Asia many explorers found new areas in North and South America, which led to the eventual colonization of the two countries. Hundred's of people became famous during this age. In this newsletter we will rpvide information on just a few. Marco Polo The journay of Marco Polo and the treasures he brought back to Italy with him helped to spark the European interest in Asia. Upon his return he wrote a book about China, which gave Europeans their earliest information. Click here to veiw a timeline of his life: Marco Polo

    Spanish Conquistadors
wrote the oldest histories we have of our continent, but told a different story than the one we learned in school. Advances in science have made it possible for us to track Conquistadors into native villages that are cities again today, along trails that are highways. Scant archaeological evidence once provided scholars grounds for "definitive" conquest route selection, but their evidence is very thin, and, if anything, their findings only add to the confusion surrounding Spanish Conquest (Brain 1985:xvi-xxiii; Bullen 1951, 1952 - See References for titles of authors' works appearing here). Scholars have, for centuries, misinterpreted 16th century terms and overlooked important tactics of ancient mariners and horsemen altogether. Moon phases and coasts were important during conquest. The King's agent with Hernando de Soto (and Cabeza de Vaca with Narvaez) described their trails through Florida in relation to the coast (Biedma in Clayton 1993:I:226, Vaca in his narration ). To the King of Spain and all professional seamen everywhere, the word "coast" meant navigable water nearest to land; a functional sea lane (the King in Clayton 1993:I:360). Scholars have used the shoreline of our shallow Gulf of Mexico for reference in placing Vaca and DeSoto's trails, but that shoreline lies at least fifteen miles inland of Florida's real "coast". "Definitive" Conquest trails have, therefore, been placed about that distance inland of their actual trail (both used many of the same trails through Florida).
