Depression Awareness: High School Outreach Program The teen years are often a roller-coaster ride of emotions, with this time being especially susceptible to wide variations in mood. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; depression appears to be occurring at a much earlier age, and the past decade has seen teen suicide rates double. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers, and there are often warning signs that are overlooked to prevent these tragedies. To increase awareness of the signs of depression and suicide risk, Park View High School will be implementing the Depression Awareness: High School Outreach Program during the 2003-2004 school year to ninth graders who are enrolled in Health classes. The Depression Awareness: High School Outreach Program is a unique education strategy that alerts people to the signs of depression and suicide and empowers them to intervene. This program uses video clips to present situations that students can relate to and generates discussion about identifying and responding to signs of depression and suicide. The program will be presented to parents prior to the classroom presentation at the PTSA meeting on October 7, 2003 at 7:00 pm.

Depression in children is quite common. This section will help parents understand, identify, and deal with the problem of depression in their children. What is depression? Depression is an unhappy mood that affects our daily functioning. When depression is too severe or lasts too long it can be considered an illness. Left untreated, depression can take the joy out of life, and even remove the desire to live. Everyone experiences minor upsets, but this does not mean that everyone is depressed. To have a true depression the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks. Please understand that the following material relates to symptoms that have been present for this amount of time. Back to top How common is depression? Depression in children is far more common than most people realize and is equally divided among boys and girls. A study at the Child Guidance Center in 1983 found that one our of three children referred was depressed. A recent University study found that one of ten children without known problems had suicidal thoughts.

The East Clinton High School counseling department extends its services to all students, parents and school staff. Services are available in a variety of settings and are developmental, preventative, and remedial in nature. Counseling services and guidance programs are vital components of the educational process which enable students to assess their needs, recognize their abilities, and develop strategies to achieve their potential. School counselors are certified professionals specifically trained in counseling theory and clinical skills adapted to the school setting. Services are provided with age-specific developmental stages of growth, tasks, and interests in mind. School counselors guide students to self-awareness so that they can make sound decisions and become responsible, productive, life-long learners. School counselors themselves are committed to the pursuit of professional competence and continued growth and development by remaining current on trends and practices in the profession. School counselors are advocates for students. In addition, school counselors assume a variety of roles and select the most appropriate one depending on the presenting concern. The tasks that counselors, kindergarten through grade twelve, most often carry out, fall under one of three primary roles: that of counselor, consultant and facilitator.

Coping with depression
Coping with depression is explained here in this article.
Depression is a problem that is everywhere. More and more people are being identified as depressed and are treated with drugs and talk therapy. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, five of the following symptoms, for a period of at least 2-weeks may produce the diagnosis of clinical depression: bodyOffer(17183) 1. A Mood that is down, sad, meaningless, or irritable for the major portion of the day. 2. Less interest in pleasurable things. 3. Weight gain or loss to exceed 5% of the body weight. 4. The inability to sleep, or the propensity to sleep all the time. 5. Noticeably slow thinking and processing, or an agitated state. 6. Loss of energy everyday. 7. The feeling that an individual has no worth, or continual guilty feelings. 8. The inability to make decisions or concentrate . 9. Suicidal thoughts and ruminating on death. It is simple enough to look at the criteria and identify there is a problem. But dealing with the illness beyond that is a difficult process. Many individuals have difficulty accepting depression as an illness, and the thought of taking medication for a lifetime is offensive. Talk therapy is extremely expensive and the disparity among practitioners can be mind-boggling. What is the difference between a licensed professional counselor, a social worker, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist. Are there options outside of traditional treatments. Actually the prospect of getting treatment can be overwhelming, and to someone who is depressed this often results in paralysis of action. The outcome is more depression.

16. What Does The Bible Say About Suicide And Depression?
discussing it with a minister, priest, school guidance counselor, physician, psychologist or psychiatrist. All these people understand depression and despair
http://www.twopaths.com/faq_suicide.htm
What does the Bible say about suicide and depression? The Bible mentions several instances of suicide, but does not give any specific laws about it. However, there are several passages that indicate life is given by God and only God has the right to take it away. For example: "I came naked from my mother's womb," he said, "and I shall have nothing when I die. The Lord gave me everything I had, and they were his to take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." (TLB, Job 1:21) More specifically, God has given life to each of us to do his work on Earth. Our bodies belong to God, not to ourselves. So, it is up to Him to decide when our work on Earth is finished, not up to us: Haven't you yet learned that your body is the home of the Holy Spirit God gave you, and that he lives within you? Your own body does not belong to you. For God has bought you with a great price. So use every part of your body to give glory back to God because he owns it. (TLB, 1st Corinthians 6:19-20) Life has its ups and downs, and the down times are only temporary, even though it may not seem that way. Often, the hard times in our lives, when things seem hopeless, are really opportunities to learn valuable lessons such as humility, dependence on God, the value of prayer, or to learn how to help others who are suffering. In times when things seem the worst, we can be sure that God loves us more than ever.

Dysthymia (Minor Depression)
Dysthymia is a disorder with similar, but longer-lasting and milder symptoms than clinical depression . By the standard psychiatric definition, this disorder lasts for at least two years, but is less disabling than major depression ; for example, victims are usually able to go on working and do not need to be hospitalized. About three percent of the population will suffer from dysthymia at some time - a rate slightly lower than the rate of major depression. Like major depression, dysthymia occurs twice as often in women as it does in men. It is also more common among the poor and the unmarried. The symptoms of dysthymia usually appear in adolescence or young adulthood but in some cases do not emerge until middle age.
The symptoms of Dysthymia are:
  • poor school/work performance social withdrawal shyness irritable hostility conflicts with family and friends physiological abnormalities sleep irregularities parents with major depression
At least three-quarters of people with dysthymia have some other psychiatric or medical disorder as well.
